  1. "Usefulness/strength" gets very close to theory-mon. There SHOULD be a prevention for some Pokemon that, no matter how much they aren't used, shouldn't drop down to UU. That's the entire point of the BL tier, to make sure that those Pokemon (Staraptor, Abomasnow, and like 3 or so others) don't drop to UU. And on a more nitpicking note, I don't think tiers that aren't based on usage should use names such as "Overused." But here's the thing about Pokemon. In theory, when a new game is released and a battle simulator like Shoddy is updated, ALL the moves and new stuff, they're available right then. But despite no new moves being introduced between the release of D/P and the release of Plat, Pokemon still had new sets being created, raising and lowering in popularity. Aerodactyl couldn't function as a Choice Band user anymore due to Stealth Rock, but it's a great suicide lead, as just one example. Basically, it's impossible to determine how "useful" a Pokemon can be. If a new set comes up or a tier test is done, it can turn the game around. Here's where I disagree. Non-OU Pokemon can be viable in OU. But only to a certain extent, when they can perform a unique role. But if an OU Pokemon can perform the same role and better, then there's no reason not to use it. For example, Blastoise. Blastoise can Rapid Spin, he can RestTalk. That's about it. You COULD have him run a Choice Band set in OU, but many others would perform a Band set better. To an extent, I see your point. But a repeated focus is that PP wants to gather evidence and do the research ourselves to draw our own conclusions, not rely on others. In my mind, if we can reach a wide consensus on something that's "obvious", we can skip an official test. But we need to set up a method of conducting tests before we should even talk about what to or what not to test.
  2. Even though we are a fast growing community, I don't think there's near the activity to warrant a tournament, at least one that would get done in a timely fashion. Anyone is free to organize one, if they wish. But those still in school are probably dealing with end-of-year stuff right now, so I wouldn't expect much activity.
  3. That's an interesting post. (keep in mind, to all that might be reading, I've never played on Shoddy) Honestly, when summer hits and people aren't presumably taken up so much by school/work, we can do a fair number of tests well before Shoddy Battle 2 is even released. We should have a discussion of switching over when it does get released, and probably will, but that's months from now. I think what's more important is that just because the engine that we use to test/collect evidence might be changing doesn't mean the method will change. We should set up guidelines on how we should conduct tests. And more specifically, what we want to test. And at this early point in the site, I think it's far more important to test out clauses such as Sleep, OHKO, Evasion, etc... rather than Pokemon tier tests.
  4. Before I post, Destati, the only edit to any of your posts (on this page) I see is from yourself. This is certainly true, to an extent. Any Pokemon who relies on Hidden Power too heavily won't be nearly as effective in the Wi-Fi environment, since breeding for/soft re-setting for one that is a good type, high powered, AND with a good nature is a pain. With Wi-Fi battlers who breed like myself, a decent Hidden Power is more like a bonus than a necessity. It's really only useful for those with x4 weaknesses. Otherwise, a good powered STAB hitting for neutral damage comes pretty close to HP whatever hitting for x2. This also goes, to a more limited extent, on how effective legendary Pokemon are, especially those in the uber environment. Even moreso for event exclusive or near-exclusive Pokemon. I don't remember the last time I saw a Celebi or Jirachi on a Wi-Fi battle. I'll leave this thread open for a bit longer. But Smogon doesn't have too many big tests going on right now, if any. And hopefully our own testing will begin soon, and that'll be a great topic of conversation.
  5. Official Help/Small Questions Thread for DPP! In effort to help reduce clutter and the many threads asking small questions, this thread has been created. Forgot where to go next on Route 212? Lost on Mt. Coronet? Wondering why Shaymin won't change forms? Any of your small questions can be answered here. Well, almost. Threads that may answer your questions: EV Training Questions/Hep Here Team Building Questions/Help Here Smogon Rule Discussion Common Rules of Battling Basically, do you have a question that can inspire discussion? If so, post a thread (if one hasn't already been made). If it's game help or general questions about the 4th gen, then post here. Hopefully this will reduce clutter in the forum.
  6. Need a Pokemon evolved via trade? Post here. Anyone posting here that agrees to trade evolution assistance promises to trade it right back to the original owner. Please post your friend code within your post. Other relevant info might be AIM/MSN/Yahoo (some people like to trade so they can talk in real-time, rather than forum posts or PM) and time zone. If you aren't chatting in real-time (IM program, chat room), please take it to VM/PM. If problems arise (someone kept a Pokemon they shouldn't have) please fallow the directions of the WiFi Blacklist Thread. Don't publicly post about how someone scammed you, even if you are 100% right. If anything likes this happens, they may be added to the Black list. But we're cool here, so that shouldn't be a problem. There's also the GTS Trade Evolution method, which Greencat posted about and I'm copying/pasting:
  7. While it's technically possible, you'll need SOME sort of program. There's a few out there, but Pokesav is, IMO, the most user friendly. And because many on this site know about it. A number of the most basic codes COME with ARDS themselves, or you'll get them via updates on the software, from Datel. And the Official Codes topics for their respective games have just about every official code you could want. People post Pokesav'd codes (mainly to activate event Wondercards) in their respective topics too. TLDR is that if there's a code you want, outside of creating an original team, it's probably posted somewhere on these forums.
  8. Don't worry about that, because GTS Trading in Platinum sucks. You can REQUEST Pokemon to be at a specific level, but when searching, it won't display that information. I'd say just keep all your GTS trading to D/P. They probably run off the same server so you'll be bale to see people using the GTS on Platinum too. This is all secondhand information though. I've yet to actually go to the GTS in Plat. Been spending time getting my butt kicked at the Battle Factory.
  9. I think Nob did an awesome job on the translation and found half the fun of Plat was reading over his work. I think part of Professor Rowan's personality is he is a very unnatural person. He spends most of his time doing field research so he isn't exactly the type to be overtly friendly. In some cases, he's kind of a dick More than a few people talk about how strange he is. Kids' games usually have maturity themes in them. It's been that way in Pokemon since the start. As for the literal translation, Nob talked about this on the Something Awful forums; that he tried hard to trim out a lot of the "fat" of the script. That way the game will have a faster pace. Well, the Pokemon Company did fire him, telling him they'll be doing their translations in-house, then informed him his last project will be Plat. Hey, I personally love the stuff. Sure, it's some of the more common and annoying internet memes like from /b, but stuff like n00b has sunk into the younger culture. In some cases, yes. But there are things that the translation has to greatly change. Such as any reference (subtle, or otherwise) to religion, drugs, sex, anything not "kid friendly". Remember Mr. Coffee, the guy in R/B/FR/LG who cheers up after you give him some coffee? He's passed out and incredibly hung over. There's some other examples he's posted in the Pokemon threads at Something Awful's forums, but I don't feel like searching for it at the moment. There's certainly a lot of word-for-word script for the first 6 or so badges. After that is where most of the new plot fits in. I think the script is pretty fantastic. But it's not like I had high expectations for a kids game anyway. It's just one of the many things that keeps me coming back to Pokemon. And Nob's words are something I'll miss come the next Pokemon games.
  10. If it's for in-game, just grab Tropius or Starly. Any in-game HM user carrying Fly also needs to carry Defog.
  11. Even though Fly does get STAB, it's basically giving the opponent an opportunity to switch in their (steel) flying resist or physical wall. Crunch would be a better option for a late game sweep considering the 20% chance of lowering defense. The last slot rounds out coverage with Aqua Tail or an elemental fang.
  12. That's probably from a list over at Pokecommunity's event list. Which is based off of a list that originated at GameFAQs. Many of the GTS Psyducks/NOA Heracross' they list are just wrong OT/ID#. That being said, even if you find a GTS/NOA Poke that looks fine, it's probably hacked. They're the hardest to get a hold of and probably the ones that have also been the least cloned. Anything that could've been generated from a Wonder Card (Palcity, TCGWC, etc...) doesn't really matter. You'll need to know a lot more than just the summary info.
  13. Yes, it's fake. PP, while named the Database, did a whole article revealing it as a fake. Many sites just jumped to conclusions that it was fake with, at best, flimsy evidence.
  14. Sub-Roost is done much better by Flygon, who is immune to ground due to Levitate. It can also use STAB Dig to Toxic-stall and it'll still avoid Earthquakes while it's underground. Moltres is a pretty horrible Roost user since it then picks up a weakness to ground, if it happens to move first.
  15. Until Aerodactyl gets Brave Bird, Rock Head isn't worth the trouble.
  16. I think the sense of community a VM builds is well worth it. I don't really think that just because it's not an essential feature means it should be ruled out, as frankly many board features aren't essential. It's a nice option to have, users can self-police their own profiles, and so on. It also creates a viewable log of all VMs between two users, rather than 50 different PMs.
  17. If you guys really want to provide the service, more power to ya. I just see it as ultimately pointless. And often, when mods inevitably shut the service down for a short time, then there's endless complaining. It's not like it's a tattoo of an ex's name on your butt. It's a screen name.
  18. This is honestly one of the worst and most useless services some forums provide. You got to pick your user name, so it's your fault if you don't like it. And honestly, it's a screen name. No one is going to make fun of you for it. Also, this forum has been open for like...what, a week? two? No one could possibly be sick of their user name.
  19. Yeah. It's true it's not as hard hitting as the other dragons, but it's the only major dragon who can Toxic-stall (Dig or Fly). It's ability gives it a worry free Roost, Screech to soften enemies, and U-Turn to get out. Maybe it'll get dragon dance next gen
  20. I re-downloaded Hayle's Aerodactyl and ran it through again and it came back hacked. I then did the same with Phione and it came back as legal. So since it seems to be running legal.exe, does that mean Aerodactyl needs to be replaced with a legal one?
  21. Then you could've done so without quoting me. There's a difference between countering a strategy used on a team, and building a team just to counter one centralizing strategy. With Sleep clause off, it limits the type of Pokemon that can be used. And then if you have to build a huge chunk of a team just to counter all the Spore and Hypnosis and Choice Scarf Dark Void Smeargles (if in Doubles) users, then you only have 2 or 3 Pokemon to counter everything else. There's nothing inherently wrong with any strategy. Even OHKO (which is something I hope we can test soon). But when a strategy ends up centralizing team building, it then creates a stale competitive field, like when Garchomp was still in OU. If people won't make modifications to their team just because they need to make sure to be able to counter everything, then we're going to end up with a handful of Pokemon running rampant and the other 470 being left at the side.
  22. There is absolutely no hack checking within the game. There is a limited hack check for Pokemon on the GTS (and, as they banned Arceus, Shayin, and Darkrai until their respective Platinum key item releases were done) and some Pokes were manually banned for a time. PBR Wi-Fi has a slightly more thorogh hack check. There's nothing for local wireless or wireless battles on the DS.
  23. I saw this linked over at SPPF and wondered if anyone has heard about this, knows it's origins, etc... http://vlacula.no-ip.com/pokemon/legality_checker/ I started randomly checking PKM files from the former database/now PP and saw that Hayley's Aerodactyl came up as hacked. I'm going to check to see if maybe I have an outdated version. I'll copy/paste what it comes up with. Test results (shot report): ( 100% passed (4 out of 4 tests) Conclusion (type): Hacked Pokemon (try statcalc) ) Full report: ( [file] => ./tmp/HAYLEY-Aerodactyl-PKM Database_b91d1f3351b44bf2e2d5450fcfa4efca.pkm [pokemon_id] => 142 [pokemon_name] => Aerodactyl [pokemon_data] => Array [checksum] => 0x57E1 - Valid [pokemonid] => 323977588 - Jolly, Male, Ability 1, Not Shiny [ivs] => 3,20,25,24,25,31 [trainerid] => 1000 [secretid] => 43066 [trainersex] => Female [hiddenpower] => Psychic - 50 [fateful] => No [gendercheck] => Valid [ev] => Valid [nicknamed] => No [hometown] => Sinnoh [Diamond] [countryorigin] => UK/US/AU [type] => Hacked Pokemon (try statcalc) It also mentions something called statcalc (http://vlacula.no-ip.com/pokemon/statscalc/statscalc.zip) but I'm cautious of downloading stuff from unknown sites. So what do you all think about this?
  24. There's really no alternative to Flygon. I picked it specifically because of it's immunity to Earthquake (rather than say Garchomp's neutral damage), easily kill Scizor with Fire Punch, and easily switch out and scout moves with U-Turn. U-Turn is the move all dragon types wish they had, but only Flygon gets.
  25. Poorly designed. Stealth Rock/Spikes/Toxic Spikes are useless in the Battle Tower unless you're Roaring the AI away. Slap on a Choice Band to take advantage of Metagross' pure power. Ideally, a Battle Tower team should be able to cover one Poke's weaknesses with the two other's either having a resitance or immunity. So if you see a fire or ground move coming, get out of dodge. Empoleon adds a second ground weakness so it should go. Here's your new partner: Flygon w/ Choice Scarf Adamant Levitate 134 HP/252 ATK/124 speed - U-Turn - Outrage - Fire Punch - Earthquake Immune to Earthquake and resists fire (covers Metagross), immune to electric and resists rock (covers Gyarados). Speed EVs allow you to outrun Jolly Aerodactyl. If you want to outrun more, take EVs from HP and put them into speed. Gyarados @ Life Ord/Lum Berry Nature: Adamant Ability: Intimidate EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe Role: Offensive (sweeper) - Waterfall - Earthquake - Stone Edge/Ice Fang - Dragon Dance Comment: Wacan Berry to weaken electric attacks, Thunderbolt and Fire Blast for coverage. With two special attacks, a nature that lowers special attack, and Gyarados' low base special attack stat , this isn't working out for you. Changes made. Get two DDs in and it's pretty much unstoppable.
