  1. There is absolutely no hack checking within the game. There is a limited hack check for Pokemon on the GTS (and, as they banned Arceus, Shayin, and Darkrai until their respective Platinum key item releases were done) and some Pokes were manually banned for a time. PBR Wi-Fi has a slightly more thorogh hack check. There's nothing for local wireless or wireless battles on the DS.
  2. I saw this linked over at SPPF and wondered if anyone has heard about this, knows it's origins, etc... http://vlacula.no-ip.com/pokemon/legality_checker/ I started randomly checking PKM files from the former database/now PP and saw that Hayley's Aerodactyl came up as hacked. I'm going to check to see if maybe I have an outdated version. I'll copy/paste what it comes up with. Test results (shot report): ( 100% passed (4 out of 4 tests) Conclusion (type): Hacked Pokemon (try statcalc) ) Full report: ( [file] => ./tmp/HAYLEY-Aerodactyl-PKM Database_b91d1f3351b44bf2e2d5450fcfa4efca.pkm [pokemon_id] => 142 [pokemon_name] => Aerodactyl [pokemon_data] => Array [checksum] => 0x57E1 - Valid [pokemonid] => 323977588 - Jolly, Male, Ability 1, Not Shiny [ivs] => 3,20,25,24,25,31 [trainerid] => 1000 [secretid] => 43066 [trainersex] => Female [hiddenpower] => Psychic - 50 [fateful] => No [gendercheck] => Valid [ev] => Valid [nicknamed] => No [hometown] => Sinnoh [Diamond] [countryorigin] => UK/US/AU [type] => Hacked Pokemon (try statcalc) It also mentions something called statcalc (http://vlacula.no-ip.com/pokemon/statscalc/statscalc.zip) but I'm cautious of downloading stuff from unknown sites. So what do you all think about this?
  3. There's really no alternative to Flygon. I picked it specifically because of it's immunity to Earthquake (rather than say Garchomp's neutral damage), easily kill Scizor with Fire Punch, and easily switch out and scout moves with U-Turn. U-Turn is the move all dragon types wish they had, but only Flygon gets.
  4. Poorly designed. Stealth Rock/Spikes/Toxic Spikes are useless in the Battle Tower unless you're Roaring the AI away. Slap on a Choice Band to take advantage of Metagross' pure power. Ideally, a Battle Tower team should be able to cover one Poke's weaknesses with the two other's either having a resitance or immunity. So if you see a fire or ground move coming, get out of dodge. Empoleon adds a second ground weakness so it should go. Here's your new partner: Flygon w/ Choice Scarf Adamant Levitate 134 HP/252 ATK/124 speed - U-Turn - Outrage - Fire Punch - Earthquake Immune to Earthquake and resists fire (covers Metagross), immune to electric and resists rock (covers Gyarados). Speed EVs allow you to outrun Jolly Aerodactyl. If you want to outrun more, take EVs from HP and put them into speed. Gyarados @ Life Ord/Lum Berry Nature: Adamant Ability: Intimidate EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe Role: Offensive (sweeper) - Waterfall - Earthquake - Stone Edge/Ice Fang - Dragon Dance Comment: Wacan Berry to weaken electric attacks, Thunderbolt and Fire Blast for coverage. With two special attacks, a nature that lowers special attack, and Gyarados' low base special attack stat , this isn't working out for you. Changes made. Get two DDs in and it's pretty much unstoppable.
  5. Please don't straw man my posts. If you want to actually respond, do so. But don't turn them into some Internet slang sound bite and put words into my mouth.
  6. Except it isn't. You use Fly, your opponent is gong to switch to someone who resist flying type attacks, or Intimidates you, etc..
  7. There's no reason to Sash something AND have it sink EVs into HP/Defense/special defense. The point of a Sash is that it won't survive one hit without it. Here's something better: Ambipom w/ Sash/Life Orb Jolly Technician 252 atk/252 speed/6 HP - Fake Out - U-Turn - Thunder Wave - Taunt Infernape can run a similar set if you want to lay down Stealth Rock. Other options Ambipom has to start the game with are Counter and Screech (if up against a bulky lead). I also think Gallade is a pretty poor anti-lead. It's own Taunt will be shut down by every other faster user of Taunt who starts out. The only other problem I have (that I feel like spending time on) is Porygon-Z. HP Fight really is only for Tyranitar, which is something that -Z shouldn't stay in on anyway. It's much better off with the boltbeam combo
  8. This should just be expanded to "Standard rules apply unless otherwise noted." While I see why you say that, there's more than a few cases where a good team can be made where it might involve some uber Pokemon. PBR, for example, or the official tournaments (it's debatable if Wobbuffet is really uber in Doubles, but that's a different topic.). And Battle Tower. But that is still more or less covered by "Standard rules unless otherwise stated." While I fully agree with your format + strategy and roles, there should be a few more requirements. For the OP Learn to accept criticism: You posted a team to be rated. Unless you're an expert (and even they can improve their teams), you'll have flaws. Maybe even a lot. Be willing to listen and make changes. Don't reject rates because "But it's my favorite" or "I won't use Blissey because she's used so much ". For the Raters Know what you're talking about: Don't post unless you're experienced in competitive aspect of battling. Different raters can have differing opinions, but there's a difference between different styles of battling and bad advice. Fix the team: After you tear it apart, make suggestions. If the role can be filled with the same Pokemon, tweak the EVs/move set/nature/etc... If it's better done by another Pokemon, post a set and explain why it does better. Don't be a jerk: Self explanatory. If they refuse to take your sound advice, that's one thing. But don't start a rate by being high and mighty.
  9. I also agree. Darker backgrounds help ease the strain on the eyes.
  10. There's been no evidence (at least as many posts I've read by SCV and co.) to say they CAN'T be shiny. As to (what I presume) if your specific ones are legit, I have no idea.
  11. The only way to get a legit Shaymin in-game is to own Japanese Platinum, which got the Oak's Letter very recently. While a Shaymin from D/P would match legal definitions as far as stats go, at best a glitch would be required to get it (E4 Surf Glitch in the Japanese release, tweaking glitch in all releases).
  12. I can't battle, but you do know that Wi-Fi battling allows you to auto level all Pokemon to either level 50 or 100, right? The only reason to ever use "Open Battle" option (All Pokemon are the level they are in-game) is if someone is using FEAR strategy.
  13. Snorlax and Blissey would work well against any Togekiss. Both can stay in while being paralyzed and can take at least a couple hits of Aura Sphere. Starmie however enjoys paralysis a lot less, but can at least absorb it. Better counters would be any number of RestTalk users to absorb paralysis (though the fighting types won't enjoy SE Air Slash), physical Vire, or Swamper. But Vire and Swampert could still get paralyzed by Body Slam. As for Scarf togekiss, it's a lot less effective than it seems. I used one for a while and it looses out on a lot of bulk when you want it to be speedy. Togekiss really likes Paralysis+Flinch rate to be the ultimate annoyer. (Though Togekiss does get Trick now, so it could be a bit more effective nowadays)
  14. The problem with Wonderguard is it's only available on Shedinja. And while it's immune to many of the most common attack types in the game (Ground, Fighting, Ice, Electric), it carries just enough weaknesses that almost every team will have at least 1-2 Pokemon who can hurt Shedinja. Add in that a variety of status and weather effects and rocks and spikes can hurt Shedinja, and it's not as appealing as it seems. So there's two ways to use Shedinja. The TLDR is that your entire team has to be built around it. AND you can't play Shedinja too early. To really get Shedinja to be effective, you need a variety of Pokemon on a team. At least one Pokemon who can quickly change the weather in case sand storm or hail comes up. Lots of Pokemon can learn Sunny Day or Rain Dance, but it's usually at the cost of a useful move. OMG if you can Baton Pass a sub to Shedinja, your opponent should probably just say "gg". This protects it from so many status (but not damaging weather). However, the most common Baton Passer, Ninjask, carries many of Shedinja's weaknesses. Others carry at least one (Scizor=fire, Togekiss=rock). The "best" is Ambipom, but when was the last time you were able to get Ambipom behind a sub? If you let Shedinja out in the early part of the game, your opponent will do all it can to keep it's "Shedinja counter" alive. So don't let it out early, no matter how tempting it is. Have a variety of status absorbers. Yeah, most of the time, one Natural Cure user or one Rest Talk user is fine. Here? Not so. Get someone with natural cure. Use a RestTalker. Get Heatran (absorbs burns AND poison) and some ground type (Swampert?). This is a ridiculous list, I know. But if you don't follow this list to a T (and I know I haven't), your Shedinja team is going to suck.
  15. You'd have to hack your game for it. None of the key items were ever distributed for D/P. Even if the Oak's Letter WC was able to be shared, D/P and Plat are different games so they just wouldn't be compatible.
  16. Except I didn't. TLDR version is I'm saying don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. What I have adovcated for is that we have soem actual method of justifying what clauses we set and where we place tiers, because up until now it was largely just theory-mon, which has been the downfall of many original tier lists. But it looks like we'll be testing on Shoddy, which will give us meaningful statistics to base everything off of. Problem solved. (Also, it'll finally give me a reason to download and learn Shoddy). There's really not much to "influence." For better or for worse, Smogon is the only fan site out there that's focused on competitive aspect of Pokemon. Sure, there's some random forums that deviate either a bit or drastically from what standards Smogon has set, but they are largely because of theory-mon rather than any actual evidence that it should be different. Please don't put words in my mouth, because I've never done anything like that. Frankly, many of their spreads need at least a bit of modifications. Some are just completely awful. When I first started playing competitively, I'd just use whatever was on the first for any Pokemon's page. But then I started modifying some EVs, using other moves, or using slightly gimmicky sets, and I learned a lot more about building a team rather than using the "Best" set for each individual Pokemon. I actually started out playing without any clauses besides "No legends" (what an idiot I was). If I lose a match because I wasn't prepared for a threat (Sub-seed, Focus Punch, Spore Breloom has destroyed TWO of my teams recently. Worse off, it was from the same opponent), that's fine, I can live with that. It's a learning experience. But if I lose a match because Sing hits two Pokemon that want to sleep until next week and a OHKO move takes out a wall that I made to take a lot of hits, I just end up angry. It's like the difference between a challenging video game and a frustrating video game. A challenging video game will motivate me to finish it and complete it, no matter how hard it may get. A frustrating video game, like say Maximum Carnage will just make me want to destroy my SNES because you can play perfectly and still get destroyed.
  17. Oh, he's referencing the weekly article Pokemon of the Week, which is a weekly article that mainly deals with competitive aspects of a Pokemon. http://serebii.net/potw/ By the looks of it, the last one was done in 2007. As far as I can tell, Serebii has little to no involvement with the forums outside of what I imagine are the administrative duties. I don't think I've ever read a post of his in the Battle Forum or Competitive RMT, at least not in recent memory.
  18. ^^^That thread was originally made so all the whining about Garchomp should go there. Now it's mainly use to discuss battle stats and, when they emerge, new sets. SPPF's Battle Forum is word-for-word standard clauses (Sleep/Species/OHKO/Evasion) and they add Hax Items to their banned list in their list of Standard Rules. Their competitive RMT forum follows Smogon rules to a T, mainly because many of them are mainly Shoddy battlers. There's been attempts at building an SPPF tier, but it consisted of about 5 people who were sort of trying and a bunch of other people just doing +1 post count. And for the huge attempt to be different, it turned out largely the same with a few exceptions. And it wasn't backed by any evidence besides theory-mon.
  19. While I don't agree with Destati completely, he does have a point. Making our own tier list is one thing. Among different communities can result in different forms of centralization. In Japan, Cresselia is seen in the same light as Scizor, Heatran, or Tyranitar is seen here. The Wi-Fi environment will have a much less focus on legendary one-off Pokemon, and Celebi and Jirachi and event exclusive, because they're harder to obtain legit versions of that also are competitively viable. But making new clauses (or, by the looks of the posts of many of the admins) or advocating fewer or no clauses isn't something I'd look for in a battling community. As Destati pointed out, Smogon is the only site out there (in English anyway) to focus exclusively on making a competitive environment out of Pokemon. And they've done it with the closest form of "evidene" you can get, with battle statistics being tracked on Shoddy and making sure it simulates the battle in-game as much as possible. While communities should be free to do whatever they want in regards to their own battling communities, most of them that do usually are just theory-monning. Which really isn't a great way to justify rules, tiers, etc... Just because this site strives to make it's own doesn't mean what other sites have done should be dismissed. A good idea is a good idea, regardless of where it came from.
  20. All "Legendary Pokemon" are are "A Pokemon deemed Legendary by Gamefreak." While some Legendary are powerful and used a lot (Heatran, Zapdos), so are many non-legends. And some legendary Pokemon just suck (Phione, Articuno)
  21. "Legendary Pokemon" don't inherently carry an advantage, as far as battling is concerned.
  22. Hax Clause isn't standard. But it is a fairly well known and used alternate clause. Regardless of it being enforced or not, any listing of clauses should at least mention it. So that when someone does initiate that clause on a battle request, people can look it up and find it out. But I don't see why Sleep Clause is ridiculous. It's standard almost anywhere you go, including communities that make their own rules and tiers from the ground up. I also would like to know how this site is coming up with, for example, the tier list (so far the only thing up original to the site and competiitve battling rules). Yes, I know it's origin (from the old Pokesav forums), but the method of determining what goes where, or even the existance of multiple "middle tier" (BL, NL?) isn't explained.
  23. Just because you don't agree or enjoy Smogon doesn't mean you can deny their importance to the development of the competitive metagame in North America. It's pretty much the only community out there that has established themselves, done research. and had staying. With any other fan sites MIGHT have a small section on competitive battling and a fairly small userbase of battlers.
  24. Hacked Pokemon don't carry an inherent advantage in a battle. As long as they match up to legal, in-game standards, there's absolutely no difference in battling against a generated Pokemon or one captured on Route 221.
