What are your thoughts on the new female character?
AtomicGreymon replied to FLOOTENKERP's topic in Generation 4
I thought Leaf was the best-designed female playable character, personally; but Kotone seems allright. Not sure about the overalls, though, lol. If indeed they're truly popular in Japan right now, I might have to take a trip over there sometime. I don't think I've seen a girl wearing overalls since I was in preschool . -
extract pkm file from battle revolution
AtomicGreymon replied to sissyvaporeon's topic in Saves - Editing Help
Yeah, that's what I was thinking as well... with Pokesav or an AR. Surely PBR doesn't use anything beyond the trainer name, gender, ID and SID to recognize who's allowed to withdraw a stored Pokemon, right? It would be fairly easy to change that information on another save in order to fool PBR into sending the Pokemon you want back out. That's assuming you know what your secret ID was on that save, of course. -

Nope, you barely need anything at all... just a Pokedex. -
Oops, my bad with the typo. Sorry about that. I've got them all on my Emerald save, yeah (Emerald is my storage game, since it clones so easily it's great for pal parking). It took so long due to the fact you had to restart from scratch every time, in order to recieve a different specimen from the colosseum bonus disc. I tried backing up and restoring a save file to speed things up a bit, but it turns out the Jirachi you get must be based on your trainer ID or SID or some other fixed element of your game, because I kept getting the same one over again when I tried using a restored save. Add to that the repeats of natures I got in the course of doing it (and of course I got progressively more repeats as I got down to the last few natures I still needed).

What also seems to foul people up on that sometimes is that it matters which game the primary connector of the link cable is connected to. If they're reversed, the Eon Ticket won't transfer over to Emerald.

Games: Rumor: Nintendo DS Successor Dev Kits
AtomicGreymon replied to NewsBot's topic in News Discussion
Not going to happen. That would mean the DS had been around 8 years, and that would be completely insane. It was more acceptable back in the days of the original Game Boy, given how much more slowly technology advanced... 9 and a half years seperated the original Game Boy from the Game Boy Color; but that simply wouldn't work anymore. Every indication so far is that we'll be getting a successor to the DS late this year, so I'd start getting used to the idea. It isn't Nintendo's fault if people get upset that they've got to spend money once every half a decade. The DSi and DSi XL are optional purchases... even the DSLite was an optional purchase. And the sales of Nintendo's handhelds are almost always fantastic; that doesn't mean Nintendo isn't working on something better. -

True about the version distribution, I guess (although I believe the program does let you enter any value you want in place of the provided options, and it will use that value instead; eg. 801D). It's never crashed on me, though. But it does suits my needs quite well as all I want to do is insert a different wondercard and alter the header and description. I want to keep my *.sav files looking as legitimate as possible, so I never directly edit them with Pokesav, and I've never used an AR on them. Also, I don't want to have Wonder Cards in a save which they couldn't originally have been recieved to (ie. Member Card or Oak's Letter in Diamond or Pearl). So I just set everything else to "no change". But I'm sure if you PM'd MicShadow with the hex values for distribution to each version (and all 5) he'd create an updated version. I once saw a thread (I think on here) that elaborated on the structure of wonder card files, but I haven't been able to find it again so I'm not sure of all those hex values myself or I'd send the message. Do you know that thread, by any chance?- 1164 replies

There's also WCDPatcher by MicShadow over at GBAtemp.net. It lets you change the header, description, distribution limit, etc. However it doesn't let you change the date range; it just removes the date requirement.- 1164 replies

Games: Brand New Nintendo Hardware: Platform of Future Pokémon?
AtomicGreymon replied to NewsBot's topic in News Discussion
Well if the DS2 is released in Japan around the end of this year, then it won't be coming out in North America until sometime in 2011... so I think you'd probably be okay on that end. -

AtomicGreymon replied to NewsBot's topic in News Discussion
The XL is just a DS targeting a specific market (eg. old people). I'm surprised they didn't give it a colour option of that fake wood veneer you often find in senior citizen's cars. The vast majority of the people who buy the XL won't care if a new handheld comes out relatively close behind the one they bought. That's no reason to delay a DS2 any longer, if you ask me. And so far it's not looking like Nintendo thinks so, either. -

AtomicGreymon replied to NewsBot's topic in News Discussion
The DS has already been around for over 5 years... by the time the DS2 comes out it will probably have been around 6 years. The Game Boy Advance wasn't even around 4 years before the DS replaced it... and the Game Boy Color barely lasted 2 and a half years. How long would you have Nintendo wait before giving us the DS2? IMO, it's already been long enough. Personally, I hope the Gen V games do end up on the DS2... since I doubt the local wireless system of the DS2 will be very different from the DS, I doubt there'd be any barrier to giving the new games a time capsule feature like the original Gold and Silver had; so we'd still be able to communication with Generation IV despite the games being on different handhelds. -

Or it could end up like Twilight Princess... starting as a title for one console, and then ending up being on the successor instead. Though it all depends on what Nintendo's new hardware is, and when they choose to release it. I'm sure GF would've preferred making Gen V for the DS2, but Nintendo hasn't left them much choice so far, given how long they've left the DS on the market. -

The DSi is allright, but I'd have been much more inclined to buy one had retained Slot-2 functionality. IMO, one of the biggest mistakes Nintendo has made recently with its handheld line (besides the mountains of horse and pony shovelware) is the complete removal of backwards compatibility with the Game Boy series. Yep; I recall reading the same thing, and I'm pretty sure that is how Nintendo initially described the DS. I suppose they weren't sure it would be able to successfully take over where the hugely-popular Game Boy line left off. Of course, we all know now that it's been just as insanely successful, if not more so. And that worries me a little bit for the future of the Game Boy... I'd kind of hoped we'd see the next handheld console as a hybrid of the two; perhaps dubbed the "Game Boy DS", or something like that. But as the DS has proved itself to be extremely popular without any association at all to the Game Boy (particularly now that even GBA-compatibility has been left out of the DSi and DSi XL), I wonder now if we'll ever see another Game Boy again. Even if Nintendo does decide never to bring the Game Boy back as their flagship handheld, I hope they'll market a new Game Boy in the future as a budget/retro device, with full GB/GBC/GBA game and accessory functionality, featuring a DSLite-quality backlit LCD screen. Currently the only properly backlit device you can play every single Game Boy game on is the second iteration of the GBASP, assuming you can find one at this point. Otherwise you have to settle for the original sidelit GBASP, or the Micro which is incapable of playing GB & GBC cartridges. Nintendo must be aware there are still millions of GB, GBC and GBA cartridges floating around out there... I think there's still some money to be made for them from that market, if they were to release such a handheld. -
This has only happened with my Silver cartridge so far, fortunately. Apparently (due mostly to the real-time-clock helping to drain the battery, in addition to maintaining the SRAM's data) Silver and Gold are the most prone to losing the ability to save relatively quickly compared to other Pokemon games. For whatever reason, Crystal has more longevity than Silver or Gold even though it also has a RTC. It's a fairly simple procedure to open the game up and solder in a new battery, though. The exact batteries you need are easily available on eBay, already with the appropriate tabs attached to them; making the swap very easy. Ideally, you should have some method of backing up your cartridge's save data so you can restore it after installing a new battery. I learned my lesson after having to go through completing Silver again, and picked up both a Transferer II (so I could keep *.sav files for all my Pokemon games on the computer), and a Mega Memory Card (very easy to quickly backup and restore a GB or GBC cartridge's sava data without mucking about with cables and computer software).

I had Red and Yellow back in the day (still got them, of course), and got to 150 legitimately. Fortunately I had one friend at school who also played Pokemon and he had Blue; so I was able to trade for those that couldn't be found in either of my games. I eventually used a Gameshark to capture Mew, as that seemed a little preferable to me than using glitches in the game itself (that missingno one corruped your hall of fame, and I wanted to avoid stuff like that). Maybe not quite legit, but Canada was just as much an event ghetto back then as it is today, so I had no other choice.

Games: Brand New Nintendo Hardware: Platform of Future Pokémon?
AtomicGreymon replied to NewsBot's topic in News Discussion
Except that the DSLite and DSi aren't truly successors to the DS in much beyond aesthetics (and most of that change occured with move from the DS Phat to the DS Lite). They're no different than the GBASP or GB Micro; very slight hardware tweaks, but primiarly a lateral move as opposed to a true upgrade. The DSi XL or whatever it's called is the least impressive change so far, and must only be for senior citizens given the god-awful colours Nintendo chose for it. DS hardware has now been in stores for well over 5 years; if a DS2 does come out by the end of this year, it will have been around 6 years. The Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance were seperated by only 2 years, 5 months... the GBA and DS by 3 years, 8 months. If you ask me, Nintendo has waited long enough to release a successor to the DS. I wouldn't complain if it came out tomorrow, to be perfectly honest. -

Games: New Generation V Pokémon Revealed
AtomicGreymon replied to NewsBot's topic in News Discussion
It would've been cool if they were, however when the DS2 (or whatever it's called) comes out is up to Nintendo, not Game Freak. And Nintendo is leaving quite a gap between the DS and whatever replaces it... apparently too long for GF to wait. Perhaps the 3rd Gen V game will be on the DS2, and be more than just a slightly-enhanced remake as Yellow, Crystal, Emerald and Platinum were... it could be a complete graphical overhaul. And thanks to the wireless nature of connectivity these days for trading/etc., the fact it was on the next-gen handheld wouldn't really impact connectivity with the first 2 Gen V games, provided the DS2 retained the same type of wireless signals (and why wouldn't it?). -
Games: New Generation V Pokémon Revealed
AtomicGreymon replied to NewsBot's topic in News Discussion
This generation has been handled a bit differently, though. Only around 14 months seperated FireRed and LeafGreen from Ruby/Sapphire; so waiting over 2 years between the Kanto remakes and Diamond/Pearl made more sense. HeartGold and SoulSilver came out 3 years after Diamond and Pearl, which is quite a bit longer than 14 months. Had they decided to wait another 2 years after Hg/Ss before releasing Gen V, then the gap between IV and V would've been 5 years; and that would be unprecedented. And, IMO, a bit too long for my liking. By the time the Gen V games come out in Japan, it will have been about 4 years since D/P was released; and that's still the longest gap we've had between generations (matching the gap between Gen III & IV, and exceeding those between I & II, and II & III). -
Games: New Generation V Pokémon Revealed
AtomicGreymon replied to NewsBot's topic in News Discussion
At least this will finally put an end to those naysayers insisting this new game couldn't be the start of Gen V; but rather some spin-off or something. On the topic of the new Pokemon, it definitely looks like an odd one... though D/P/Pt introduced quite a few odd-looking designs as well. I hope the first Pokemon they reveal a full picture of is one of the long-awaited evolutions to one of the Gen I Pokemon who still have no evolution line. -

Well, I wonder how they get it then, lol; unless one of their members works for Gamestop or something. I seriously doubt a Nintendo Employee that made that available would be around for long. Seems you have to join their community to even look at it. I'd be interested to see if the distribution thing has changed much.- 1164 replies

The PCD of that Pichu is one hex value off from being identical to the PCDs for the same event uploaded previously by 2 other users... though I'm sure that's due to the fact it reports in Pokesav as being recieved February 6th instead of January 13th. How'd you get the Jirachi so early? I think I'll still wait until the official beginning of the giveaway to distribute it to my game (for the appearance of as much legitimacy as possible), but it's still cool to have it so early.- 1164 replies

Well as far as I know EB Games and Gamestops in Canada aren't giving away the Pikachu-colored Pichu, either. Maybe to be safe I'll drop by my closest store (a Gamestop, as it happens) tomorrow and ask the guy working in there, though. Couldn't hurt, I guess.

True enough. If I knew Nintendo wouldn't crush me under a pile of lawyers, I'd register the domain "www.pokemoneventsforcanada.com" in partnership with a number of Canadian Pokemon fans spread over the country for the purpose of organizing and advertising the locations, dates and times for giveaways of prior events that never came here. I imagine it'd be quite popular, lol. That's very strange. I may drive to my local Best Buy tomorrow evening on my way home, and switch on my DS to give a listen for event signals. Though as Best Buy Canada wasn't mentioned on Pokemon.com, Nintendo.com, or Nintendo.ca I'm highly skeptical.
