  • Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu and Pokémon Let's Go Eevee

The Pokémon Company held a press conference, and some new Pokémon games were announced! For this year, the games that are on the horizon are main series games with Pokémon Go elements, and features some returning mechanics. Additionally, new core series games were reported to be released in the second half of 2019. The pair of games for this year prominently feature Pikachu and Eevee, and use a graphical coloring style not seen with other core series games.

During this sudden unannounced press conference from the Pokémon Company, alongside a spin-off game titled Pokémon Quest, this year's core series games were revealed to be titled Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu and Pokémon Let's Go Eevee. These games are for the Nintendo Switch and feature an all new graphical coloring style, though it is notable that it reverted back to a chibi-style for character models. In an interview, it has been revealed that the games will only support the original 151 Pokémon and their Alolan forms. An interview also revealed that during a portion in the trailer where the Switch games send a gift over to Pokémon Go, that gift was actually a never before seen new Pokémon. However, it is not clear presently if this new Pokémon itself is supported by the Let's Go games. (For example, the first Ranger game was capable of giving away a Manaphy Egg as a gift, while the game itself could not use the Manaphy)

One of the goals for these new games, was to make it easier for people to catch Pokémon, as the target audience was Go players, younger players and casual players. An example of such a change, was the removal of the ability to battle wild Pokémon (note: wild encounters still happen), though important to note that players can still battle trainers the classical way. The games will take place in Kanto and was inspired by Pokémon Yellow, which came out in 1998 in Japan. Other features include the ability to ride Pokémon, as well as the new addition of a co-op mode that allows for a second player to join the game by using a second Joy-Con. During co-op mode, both players can throw Poké Balls at the same time, and battle together via double battles. Besides this, players can send Pokémon from Pokémon Go to a special Park in the games and play with the transferred Pokémon.

Another announcement made during the press conference, featured a new peripheral: the Poké Ball Plus. With the Poké Ball Plus, players can take a Pokémon from their games into the real world by storing the Pokémon into the Poké Ball Plus, not dissimilar to the Pokéwalker dongle released together with Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver. Furthermore, the Poké Ball Plus can be used as a Pokémon Go Plus peripheral. The new core series game is slated to be released in the second half of 2019, being developed concurrently with the Let's Go games. It is not known if these presently unnamed games would be an entry under generation 8, though it was reported that the unnamed 2019 games would go back to classical mechanics, as opposed to the Go mechanics seen in the Let's Go games.

Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu & Let's Go Eevee will be released worldwide November 16, 2018.

Also I presume that since it only supports Gen 1 pokemon, that Gen 1 to 7 pokemon cannot be transferred to gen 8 let's go pikachu or let's go evee!?!?!?

    Actually:
R/G/B - effectively same game, with graphical differences. You decided to play the same game 3 times XD. Also, the VC release is the same as original, doesn't count as new game.
Yellow - different, due to changes in story elements. Also, the VC release is the same as original, doesn't count as new game.
FR/LG - effectively same game pairing.
    LGP/LGE - same game pairing.

See, the list is now shorter XD
    . /joke
I do understand that feeling, given that I've played the same games.
doesn't mean I won't get it to spend time until 2019, tho XD (plus, new Pokemon from it, remember? XD)

Yes, they specifically mentioned only Kanto Pokemon (and it's alolan formes) from P-Go can be transferred,
and didn't respond to comments regarding Pokemon Bank.

Also, There is no indication that LGP/LGE being a Gen 8 game.

Remember, a new Generation is defined by a new roster, (typically with a new regional dex), mostly starting with new starters. (Victini being the exception, since it was a hidden Mythical)
Expansion via formes, and recently, Ultra Beasts and midway Mythicals don't count.
(Also not defined by the console it is on.)

    Sorry, long rant:

    Spoiler

If anything, it's a Gen 1 game, if it only accepts Gen 1 creatures.
Or maybe a Gen 7 game, since it accepts Alolan formes.

But it is by no means a Gen 8 game.

Debunking the "It has New Pokemon" angle:
Right now, it is not known if the game can even hold the New Pokemon. For all we know, it only gifts it.
Ranger gave away Manaphy egg, but it wasn't a Gen 4 game.
XD had Bonsly and Munchlax (that we couldn't transfer away), but it wasn't a Gen 4 game.

I would only count it as a Gen 8 game, if it could hold most of the roster of Pokemon introduced in the 2019 game.

Debunking the "it may be able to communicate with the 2019 games" angle:
RGBY could communicate with Gen 2, and its status didn't get boosted from Gen 1 to Gen 2 lol.

    PS: don't double post.

So... Game Freak is like preparing for more of a big release? Maybe they just made this to entertain those until at least they announce the other game. Hope in the next main core series they put MUCH more pokemon, at least 200+. Hope they improve the way of communicating online as well.

@YoshiMoshi keep in mind this isn't a core Pokemon game, that will come next year.

This is a spin off designed to appeal to the audience who enjoy Pokemon Go, I suspect many of these people might never have played past Pokemon adventures on Nintendo's consoles (based on speaking to people i've met when out playing Pokemon Go). This would be a good introduction to the Pokemon franchise on the Switch, with the view of getting a different type of player in to Gen 8 when released.

For me personally I see this more as Pokemon Go with a single player story you can play at home, allowing Kanto to be explored with totally different game mechanics compared to the traditional core franchise. The co-op feature looks really interesting to me too as historically Pokemon has been a very much a solo experience beyond trading / battling.

I suspect you will be able to trade with Pokemon Go and that's it. Pokemon will likely only have two moves and similar mechanics to Pokemon Go (CP for example).

They probably developed the engine for the Switch, and decided to have different development teams run with it.

As there aren't any major features in it, I would imagine these games being made by a younger team (and I know it's led by Junichi), to let them get important game making experience.

Also, this game makes sense, from the perspective of getting Go players hooked. If they do buy a Switch to play this game, they'll be invested and will buy the 2019 ones.

    edit:

@InsaneNutter actually they've mentioned a few times this is a core series game.

in an interview, it was said the transfer with Go are one way.

Ah interesting I hadn't seen that mentioned. It's certainly the most unique core series game then, which to me is not a bad thing personally.

With that in mind i'd suspect eventually any Pokemon obtained in this / Go could be traded up to Gen 8. I was thinking to myself these games and Go might well be kept separate.

No Pokemon bank, no breeding, no later gen Pokemon. At least for now it doesn't seem like a core game.

I suppose if it is a full reboot, it could be a core game?

Didn't they say that the core series games would be released in 2019?

This is definitely a first of its kind Pokemon game, but isn't the first pokemon game of every console/handheld generally not core series?

Right i aslo thought it was said to be a core game.

As of now we have heard of nothing to suggest gen 1 to gen 7 can communicate with the 2018 SW games. In fact because it only compatiable with gen 1 pokes, it would only be possible to transfer gen 1 pokemon in your gen 7 games to the 2018 SW games. But this seems unlikely to me because only very few pokemon would be comparable so it would seem like a waste of time and money to Make them comparable. But still possible.

Also it was confirmed to have no bank or breeding support? Or it just hasn't been announced either way yes or no yet?

It's also odd because u can get other pokemon in pokemon Go that aren't Gen 1, so only certain pokemon from Go are compatible.

Like mayb the 2019 SW games will be compatiable with Gen 1 to 7 games, but this seems unlikely because then we will have two independent paths to transfer pokemon to 2019 SW games. 1. Gen one to Gen 7

    2. Pokemon Go and the 2018 SW games

It's worrying, but the looks of it it's a hard reboot, but what about the new never before seen pokemon? This would be pokemon 800 something, but yet the games aren't compatiable with Gen 1 and 7, really odd indeed.

It's more like an alternative timeline (if you will) in the same universe. After the core game in 2019, a similar game to this might be released in 2020, however set in Johto. Nintendo seems to want to release a Pokemon game each year, so at least this would give some variation between the games if so.

I'm so disapponted, especially by the graphics of this game.

It's clearly not a game for harcore players we are but for new Pokemon players who played Pokemon Go.

Hope it'll not have a huge sucess in order to not keep some mechanic changes like the catching system or the CP.

    I hate the accessory too.

Note that the divorce between Nintendo and GF is closer than ever with that game.

But it can have good aspects too:

-the new Pokemon annonced (gen 8)

-the story: back to Kanto in the alternate universe we'll surely discover more about Giovanni's plans

-the connectivity with Pokemon Go: if those games are also compatible with Pokemon Bank in a way or another we can access to exlusives moves and rare Pokemon

    Spoiler

    Exclusives Moves:

    -Play Rough Jugglypuff

    -Mud Shot Diglett/Dugtrio/Graveler/Golem

    -Acid Grimer/Muk/Koffing/Weezing

    -Stomp Hitmonlee

    -Psybeam Chansey/Starmie

    -Quick Attack Staryu/Starmie/Porygon

If Pikachu and Eevee can't evolve......I'm going with the mascot all the way ❤️

Not that I don't love that Eevee looks like a fox (i have a pet dog that LOOKS like a fox, so....).

But Pikachu is the cheery yellow mascot of all things Pokemon ❤️ And an overall longer time favorite of mine xD I used to have a forum named after him, anyways :P (i deleted it cuz it became too dramatic with my posts about my autism over my teen years after awhile......NOT cuz i 'stopped liking pokemon" :P though posts of mine on there likely woulda lead people to believing that NOT TRUE AT ALL sort of case....lol......)

I think Pokemon Colosseum and GoD are also considered "main series" (or "side series"), because they aren't spin-offs either, however they aren't "core series". I think the important point is to understand the different categories, whatever you may call them.

Personally, if this formula was the future of the series, It'd be majorly disappointing and I would end my support immediately for the franchise onward. However as we know, 2019 is supposed to be the "real" Switch RPG that was hinted at during last year's E3. That makes me totally fine with LGP/LGE being it's own thing, even if it turns into it's own "Let's Go" line with future releases to better suit casual fans.

I'm still waiting to see more detailed information. Regardless, I don't think this game will be bad in any sense, considering this isn't the future of the "core series" formula. I think it'd be fun to play through a 3D Kanto (even if it is similar to XY/ORAS graphics), something easy to pass the time during boredom without getting as invested in it as with a core game. I don't see why it wouldn't at least be enjoyable. I always said I don't want another Kanto remake unless it features a new story taking place years after GSC (or a prequel), so lets hope it isn't just a watered down RGBY.

In summary, I'm totally okay with this as long as we'll still be getting the regular formula RPGs, which we are.

Also, something to note is that Gale of Darkness teased us with Bonsly and Munchlax before Gen IV was even out. That's probably what they're doing in LGPE with that "special" pokemon they teased.

Do what they did with Zeraora and block the new pokemon from being traded to the games or add an new update to USUM that allows the new pokemon(although its very unlikely and they didnt do it for XY or SM)

Frankly wasn't surprised. Pikachu in Yellow couldn't evolve.

Having unused data in an older game doesn't equate to trade-back capabilities.
Gen 6 has Zygarde species moves, has AZ Floette (lol), has 2 unused pentagon symbols (as in 2 slots),
but no tradeback from Gen 6 <-> Gen 7.

Heck, their PKM data structure is pretty much the same (and they're on the same device), and they couldn't be bothered,
and just made it a one-way transfer from Bank.

Now, we're talking about a different game that *might* adopt a different data structure, on a different system altogether.
I frankly expect them to drag their feet with Bank support...

It would be cool if they decided to allow trades from LGP/LGE, and I would really want to have the P-Go symbol on SMUSUM,
but they can easily not support tradeback, and have that symbol on LGP/LGE instead.

Also look at this joke piece I made:
    image.png

Look at all the similaries LGP/E has with Gen 1 /joke.
Honestly, for a game in this era, to not allow receiving newer Pokemon, makes me uncomfortable to call it Gen 7.
(How is it a Gen 7 game, if it cannot receive the newer Pokemon).

Yet, it cannot be called Gen 1, since it can receive Alolan Pokemon.

Let's call it Gen 1/7. (lol, end joke.)

Yeah, that's why I was afraid of this possibility. You just confirmed it and that was like another stab to ensure my hype's death (?

Still, Pikachu is somewhat passable, as it's an electric Mon with advantage against a couple of types. But Eevee is normal and has no coverage nor whatsoever, so an unevolvable one is pretty much..well...useless, even for a walkthrough. Unless they're making it awfully easy just for the sake of new players (which, then again, is almost sure to happen).

Had this into account but since there's no way this is a G8 game (srsly, GF, you can't) it might still be compatibile with G7, pretty much like Colo/XD back in the day.

Exactly what I was thinking. It would only end up being more like a Mascot of a partner, as opposed to being a true partner.
Hence why I've yet to make a decision on which game to get.

I don't think I have ever taken so long to decide on which game to get.

Indeed. How is it G8, if it can't even accept G8 monsters.

Frankly, I hope that it'll get patches, so that it can accept more Pokemon with time, but I find that unlikely.
It's not like they patched SM to allow it to have USUM introduced creatures.

Then again, the way patching worked on the 3DS is extremely clunky.
To add models, gotta download the entire garc, which can be pretty big.
Hope that changes with the Switch.

    • Since they released over a decade ago, the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games for the Nintendo DS have not had much in the way of ROM editors. Over the past few years, hackers have slowly learned more and more about the inner workings of the games, culminating in the most advanced PMD editor to date: Sky Temple.

SkyTemple is a user-friendly level editor for Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky that gives the user full control over graphics, scripts, Pokémon data, and more, enabling a great amount of creative freedom to prospective ROM hackers to create not just edits of the game, but entirely new levels and plots.
