I wrote a small program that edits a/0/5/6 (trpoke) from HGSS, increasing the level curve to smoothly rise from 5 to 100 (Elite 4 are roughly the same level as they are in RBY, post-E4 trainers scale from their through 100 (by distance from Vermillion City)).   4. That's probably a mechanism that avoids the console from beeing closed. I remember we had a GBA SP to try out different games each week or so at a local store years ago. It had a similar looking metal clamp screwed to the back. Besides beeing an anti-theft mechanism it prevented people from closing or turning of the console.

  5. the game generates a PID for the pokemon. during battle, it will display as shiny if the NPC trainer ID makes the PID shiny. after battle (capture), it will be shiny only if YOUR trainer ID makes the PID shiny. There's no re-rolling involved before/after purification/capture.
