View Full Version : Project Pokemon Creative/Artists Badge
Okami

The idea has been circulating softly through the artists of this community. Some want to be given a Helpful Member's badge, for their creations of avatars and signature banners.
But here's what I'm suggesting. Maybe more than just the badge given for being a helpful member to the community, there should be a badge for the creativity of the individuals behind these projects.
But that doesn't just mean this badge would be given to anyone who posts a piece of artwork and calls it a day. No, this badge would be more of one of honor and dignity for the true artists, like any other badge given. For the artists here that work hard to impress and please those requesting these small pieces of art to treasure and call their own on these forums and around the community.
I've brought this up before,
Oh, oh! I've got it! There should be a Creative badge! For those who are deemed good writers and artists and whatnot. :] But I think it deserves more than just that, it needs some healthy discussion.
So, what I guess I'm asking, suggesting, whatever this is...would it be possible for this badge to be instated? Should these hard-working people be given the credit they feel they deserve?
Here's a look at what the badge could be: http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/OkamiKeisoh/Smeargle_Badge-1.png Editted by yours truly. :]
I've talked to several people about it already, but it's time to see what you as a whole community think.
Yay or nay, Project Pokemon?

Usually a badge looks like one of those gym leader badges... but whatever. Maybe a Smeargle might do :-/
You already know my opinion for this Okami...
kunaidude, telos, Illithian, Narwhal, Enkidu, bear831, Okami, that Japanese name guy, pokemonfan... that's quite a list of people. Compared to us Shoddy moderators... yeah, definitely...

Of course. My two sigs were made in the Narwhal and Illithian sig thread and they deserve some recognition for their work. This badge will reflect the hard work they do for us.

Hmm i don't think a Smeargle would fit in with the badges, it would be the odd one out, like next to wraith's metal badges, the Smeragle would just seem strange.

I'm actually not too sure. Badges so far seem to revolve exclusively to this site... Moderator, or a contributer to the site. A badge for people who create for others isn't directly related to the well-being of the site, so it's kind of odd. I can see it working if you contributed art to the site somehow... Like the themes... But just for giving things to members doesn't seem to add up with the current pattern.

True it wouldn't follow the pattern...
Some want to be given a Helpful Member's badge, for their creations of avatars and signature banners.
But of course just giving the helpful members badge kind of would. They are being helpful afterall. Lots of people enjoy the avatars and signatures made for them. I love my drifloon sig and breloom sig which are courtesy of narwhal and bear831 plus my wonderful drifloon avatar made by okami. People always seem to love the work made for them and if they dont then the artists fix it to their liking.
They should get something for their hard work. (I'm not just saying that because I'm one of the artists)

If there is a badge made i think the only ones to deserve it at the moment are Narwhal and Illithian they started long before half of use and have made some great work.
also i thought Enkidu and jap guy were leaving?

I don't really see how this is necessary... and it'd open up the possibility for more frivolous "badges" down the line. I really don't want to see the day where everyone has 3+ and some people have 24, and nobody even cares what they mean anymore because there are too many.

pokemonfan! I made you that Breloom signature, not Narwhal!
And yea, I think that the badges are a great idea. Some users can't earn badges like Rate my Team, etc. because they're hard at work focused on their art for others. It would be nice for artists to get credit for the work they do, helping threads be more colorful and fun. No bias :)

I think yes, because even though I am not and never request them to do anything, they work hard at their art work for others. If it is made, that person must have made X amount of sigs/avatars/other things for other members to qualify.

I know, but it should be judged on quality, not quantity. If you want to judge it on both, that's fine. But it shouldn't be just quantity. Well, quantity does show your dedication to making art...

There should be a number limit, because I don't think anyone deserves the badge if they only make one image, even if it is the most beautiful in the world.

'Dixon is exactly right. Just because a person posts a piece of art that looks really good doesn't mean that's that and they get the badge. What would happen if that person just ripped another person's work to call it their own? That's wrong in every possible way. Art theft angers me so much.
A person in question of getting this badge would not only have quality work, but quantity to show their talent...a passion and great respect for art, respect for others, and be dedicated to helping and serving of this community.
That may just be my opinion, but I believe that without passion, there is no fire. And where there is no fire, passion is dead. An artist always has an inspired passion for their work; whether or not they like it themselves (In my eyes my art is crap, but that doesn't stop me from drawing. Zeal is passion! :P)

But, since we have breached the topic of username color; a nice grey would be cool #3A3A3A ...Or a steel? #2D3136 And I really like this purple #7C4C9E

Badge is fine, but I'm not completely sure about colors. We look at others... they're admins/mods/super mods... and then we have developers and contributors, who actually do stuff for the website. Not trying to offend anyone here, but artists only do it for recreational value and for the forum members anyhow, so I'm not entirely so sure.

Let us not get too distracted by username color, guys.
Just wanted to share a small journey of internet dictionaryism I took today. It relates to this, so I figured I'd share.
One of the definitions of "Creative" from dictionary.com caught my eye today, it simply stated
originative; productive
Unsure exactly what it meant by originative, I dug a little deeper.
having or characterized by the power of originating; creative.
Digging deeper, I went to creator,
a person or thing that creates.
From creator, I went into the thesaurus, coming across artist. Synonyms for the word artist included
artist; painter, limner, drawer, sketcher, designer, engraver; master, old master; draughtsman; copyist, dauber, hack; enamel, enameler, enamelist; caricaturist; illustrator; cartoonist; graphic artist., historical painter, landscape painter, marine painter, flower painter, portrait painter, miniature painter, miniaturist, scene painter, sign painter, coach painter; engraver; Apelles; sculptor, carver, chaser, modeler, figuriste, statuary; Phidias, Praxiteles; Royal Academician., photographer, cinematographer, lensman, cameraman, camera technician, camera buff; wildlife photographer.
As you can see from that, there are many ways in which a person can be an artist. From there, I went back to the dictionary page, at the first definition that came up for artist was this:
a person who produces works in any of the arts that are primarily subject to aesthetic criteria. Notice the S. Works. That alone is enough to say what I've been saying for this badge: it is not enough to give one image and call it a day.
For those of you who don't know, aesthetic means this,
pertaining to a sense of the beautiful
Which is exactly what we, as image makers (whether for signature or avatar) are. We are artists, creating beautiful pieces of artwork for the enjoyment of those around us. :]
wraith89
Jul 5th, 2009, 07:26 PM
If only I haven't given up art because of all the competitive nature of my school... sigh. If only I can draw for fun once more...
And Okami, it's spelled aesthetic, not aethetic, fix that :p
We'll never be creators. We only simply rearrange what's been created.
And as I pointed out earlier, no username colors xD

You know what? I change my mind. The people who make artwork for the members is awesome, but since it really isn't a contribution to the site, but to the members themselves, would it not make more sense to give them a helpful members badge instead? Because to me and all the members who got our signatures and avatars from artist members here feel that they have been helped, and making another badge for being an artist would just be classifying them as artists, not helpers.
wraith89
Jul 5th, 2009, 08:04 PM
The term helper is quite vague though :o
I think helping is in terms of useful posts or what not (stares at my badge and wonders where "useful posts" came from)...
But artists might need that distinction... well, not need, but something different from "helpful member" badge.
Okami
Jul 5th, 2009, 08:06 PM
But we are artists, Floot--Just as much as we are helpful members. That is why this badge is in suggestion.
FLOOTENKERP
Jul 5th, 2009, 09:42 PM
It is still just helping. The art does not contribute to the site in any way, but since it helps members it deserves the helpful members badge. If your art work was put onto the site, it would make sense to give the person an picture contributor because you contributed your art to the site. But this is for the members, so it calls for a helpful members badge.

Eh, not exactly.
Helping = helpful posts
At least that's how I see it. And art isn't always exactly helpful stuff. It can be for solely recreational value. But people like The Fallen make the skins here... maybe he can be one?
FLOOTENKERP
Jul 5th, 2009, 10:53 PM
He could be an image contributor for contributing his images to the site. And helpful member does not in any way specify it is for only posts. And even if it did, the threads for sigs and avatars are given to you by posts. I would count that as a helpful post.

i know that i don't deserve it or anything but artists like Narwhal,Illithian,Naru-chu,telos......those people truly deserve it. but take for instance how hard someone tries.
like pf(pokemonfan) like me, is not exactly the best avatar and/or sig maker.but we both put in great effort into it. and in the end, we take it to our liking and if we don't, than we re-do the whole thing. and it goes on like this until it comes out with a reasonable result.
all that effort should also be noticed is what i'm trying to say. please don't let this get in too deep. it's just a point i'm trying to get out.

I agree with what Wraith said about helpful member's badge being towards helpful posts. That's how I felt about it, which is why I came to suggest this in the first place.
And the same goes with agreeing with Kunai, I feel the effort the artists make here is impactful to the community, helping to bring it alive in color. It should be noticed.
Again having to agree with Telos...let's not get distracted with bringing username colors into it. :] That can come later (if at all,) if this gets resolved to have the badge.
So far there are three choices we have towards what this badge may look like:
Smeargle Icon
Artist's Palette
Rainbow Badge
Any of them would be sufficient in my eyes; though the rainbow badge would be the only one of the three to truly match the other badges already in place.
I mean...just look at how pretty it is! http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/OkamiKeisoh/RainbowBadge.png

@username colors discussion- i really don't care about it.
@ another one of my opinions-
it would be nice to have a badge and all, but pretty much everyone on the whole forums knows we make sigs and avatars. is a badge really worths this HUGE discussion?
i mean we make people happy and we already have our own little personalized sig badges made by Okami. why would we need a simple badge under our usernames?

I'm very confused as well.... But I think I will stick to my original opinion. ~ I will vote as undecided, first of all. Second of all, if the majority of the votes is "yes", then I think that the person receiving the badge should get approved by Damio or somebody like that. If the voting is no, then oh well, sorry guys. Lol :)
Wait-- I'm not sure if this is too complicated or not, but also if the majority of the votes is "yes", then we could probably have an "artist in training" badge for the newbies. Hahah :)
I like the rainbow badge idea, though. Maybe a black-and-white version of the rainbow badge for the newbies? I don't know, just a suggustion.

Don't turn this into a huge debate, please, guys. It was never meant to be like that! Open discussion is fine, that's what this thread is here for, just don't abuse it ;)
We are artists, using our recreational talent with programs designed for artistic purposes (GIMP, Photoshop, etc.) to better the community.
Yes, the avatar artists have the badges created by myself, and the sig artists have their thread badges as well. As I see it, those are more primarily for entering the thread (for newer members especially, perhaps unsure where to go, we all remember those days...at least I do anyways)
The badge we are discussing is different from that. It's go a question swirling in my head, where would any of us be without art? Not just art per ce, but music, poetry (writing in general). Creativity and imagination. Without them at all, we wouldn't know any difference; because we DO know those things, it would be dull...black and white, if you will.
We are helpers, not in posts or rating teams like some. We are the artsy group, the group that everybody loves or just loves to hate. :] ...Think of that as in terms of Highschool cliques and stereotypes, it's totally true.

I'll give it another day or two, then I'll PM one and ask for a solid Yes or No to this.

Well, I'm an artist, and I really like it when I'm recognized with what I do. (You would know especially, Ooky ;D )
It's not like if you meet someone, they'll say "Oh, hey, btw, I'm an artist! 8D"
... But being recognized is a very good thing. ^^
Therefore, I support~!

just been skimming the thread and noticed that there were some mini arguments that people were discussing other then the direct thread topic
-apparently people like the idea enough to discuss the following
*who should get the badge
-what defines the people that will get the badge
*what the badge will look like
-other sprite edits too (I liked narwhal's version but...)
*username color changes
-whether that should even happen
-existing colors
i think those were the big ones and I'm thinking this should really be officialized by an admin or disclosed before any of that discussion starts spraying off.
@okami
-congrats! You got your friend to join...

I just saw chycorita's post and yay, he's still using my avatar. Lots of people have avatars that were made by the artists (and sigs) some of them even have stories behind them...
Like hottsushiz
he was so late for picking up his avatar he had 3 made originally then like 2-3 more (me forgets) and now he cant choose between mine and telos's so he just switches.

We'll figure everything out, guys. The poll ends tomorrow, so we'll go from there. Most likely, I'd say we'll follow what Greencat and what other mods and admins have to say, since they're the ones running this joint! ;)
