US law tends to favor deontologically thinking. Once, when there was snow, a man tried to clear some of the deep snow off the sidewalk. He didn't get it all, but made it less likely for anyone to slip. Well, someone did slip, sued that man, and won because that man took liability by altering it. If he left it alone where it was more dangerous, then he wouldn't have lost in court.
