Everyones favorite glitch pokemon right? has anyone looked at its base stats and moveset in R and B? i think the truth about missingno is that it was a prototype of lugia, but scrapped early on (remember how Ho-oh was one of the first pokemon to appear in the show), based on its moves and types. It is a flying type, and learns water gun naturally. based off of lugias original appearance, Missingno knows the weaker version of water moves lugias known for (not to mention sky attack, its strongest flying move). Statwise it seems to take after ho-oh however, having the highest attack stat in the first gen.

Any comments, ideas, possibilities?

this glitch pokemon was has been thoroughly researched (lol) and as far as i remember it was just an honest glitch. there is some really good glitch and missingno website, have a look on google, i forget which one.

due to the fact that missingno usually screwed your game up id have to say its probably just a glitch, i always kinda hoped that they would turn it into a real pokemon in a later game with a really strange story and uber super dooper status, like OHKOing everything and banned from the elite four, gyms, trainer battles etc.

I think that would have been a good idea but that would have probably ended the series.

it would make an end to any random encounter that usualy would keep the gamers busy so yes it would decrease the lifespan of pokemon.

today pokemon is one of the most succesful marketingcampaigns it would be a sad thing if it went wrong.

Well from what I know, and read, the Lugia theory seems good. But from what I know, it was made only for testing purposes, such as testing battles, they used it, it was probably graphically better and the move set was probably better. It might even have been a prototype type thing of Lugia, like you said. I think that as they tried to erase it from the game but didn't completely erase it, but altered the moves and graphics and never erased the pokemon. It is accessed as you know by Talking to the old man, flying to Cinnabar Island and surfing on the east side of the island on the half land half water strip. Now random memory dumps (?) may have cause it to appear, and since it is number 000 in the pokedex, it is missingNO (missing number). So the random memory dumps (?) that may cause it to appear, make it have the moves it has, the graphics it has, and the pokedex number. I have read all of this before, I am trying to piece everything I can remember together. I hope this makes sense. I think this is the wholecause of it. In the remakes, they made sure this never happened again. Now in YELLOW, you can actually get missingNO, I have. I heardthat it COMPLETELY screws up your game. It only does that temporarily, I will try to find the article that tells you how to get the yellow missingNO. It is VERY dangerous though. I nearly ruined my yellow game forever. As soon as I find the article, I will make a new thread and post it. :)

I am beginning to wonder if MissingNo was Togepi. Togepi was in the Pokemon Anime but was not in the video game. Maybe the programmers were thinking about putting Togepi in, they did but then they deleted it to save it for Gold and Silver. That is my guess.

Well actually Togepi may have been in the games as well as Ho-Oh and Lugia, but instead of becoming MissingNO, they became other glitch pokemon, look at the link randomcouchpotato posted. :) that's probably what other pokemon from the anime that didn't make into R/B/Y.

Well what other glitch Pokemon could they have become?

I have been reading up on that site about info on glitches for a long time now. Ever since I got my Gold version back in 2000. (Looking at your age thing under your avatar that made you about 2 years old I was 6 at the time. Wow how time flies while playing video games for your whole life.) Well anyway a couple of years ago I was riding the bus home from school and the kid sitting next to me was playing his Pokemon Red version (he loves the retro games, he won't play the new Pokemon games) he started messing around and I had a lot of knowledge about Pokemon already (having been playing it since the Red and Blue versions) well anyway this kid was always mean to me since we were little like 7 or 8 so I took his game and I did the MissingNO thing and I caught it for him. He thought it was a new Pokemon or something....and yeah when he came to school the next day and told me that his game didn't work anymore he was mad. Let's just say DON"T EVER CATCH MISSINGNO PEOPLE!!!! LOL! So a couple months ago he let me see his Red version and I decided to do some research with it. I got my two Gameboy Colors out and started messing around. I got out my Crystal version and hooked it up with his Red version and I traded his MissingNo from Red version to my Crystal. Amazngly enough it turned into a Kangaskhan. It was a L. 100 and knew the attacks Psychic, Fly, Fissure and Sky Attack. It did not mess up my Crystal...and it did not fix his Red version. I just decided to write down what his starter Pokemon was and what he made his in game name and re-started his Red. I got all the way back to the point where he had started messing around and just saved. I came back the next Monday and gave him his game back he has not even noticed that I re-started yet.

lol! Anyway, yea, me cousin gave me Crystal and Red when I was 4 or 5 (I started playing video games heavily when I was young, yet I'm not obese) and I started playing through, when I finished, I did tons of glitches, so atmy age, that is how I know so much about glitches, I actually had a 2 year gap between playing, because of part of the MissingNO glitch xD. And thecatching MissingNO rumor... Oh.... Its false, the worse it does is ruin your Hall of Fame. I actually had a full party of MissingNOs and nothing bad happened! I later did tons of other glitches and caught them. .4 being one of the most dangerous to get. Look at the R/B hex lst on the site to see some odd pokemon. I caught most of the glitches w/o GameShark :D

Well, I really don't have a clue about r4is and things like those (lol) but if you want to emulate it on your computer, I suggest googling "Virtualboy Advance" or "No$GBA" and then making a ROM image of a pokemon game or downloading one. If you download it, make sure you have the actual game, for legal reasons. I suggest Virtualboy Adance" for GB/GBC/GBA games. :P

OK thanks. I will download it on my computer and I did find an emulator for Nintendo GB/GBC games on Google. It is called Lameboy. Let's just hope it works. I am going to get Yellow, Red and Blue versions to test.

i bumped into missingno in red and blue ( i think i remember him being around seafoam islands), i was always afraid the glitch would ruin my save file for some reason so I'd never save after seeing him. but he was a mirage among pokemon.

Wow, it's been what, almost 15 years since MissingNo first appeared, and there's still speculation about him?

Here is Nintendo's official statement:

"MissingNO is a programming quirk, and not a real part of the game. When you get this, your game can perform strangely, and the graphics will often become scrambled. The MissingNO Pokémon is most often found after you perform the Flight Safari Zone Pokémon trick [or Viridian Old Man trick]. To fix the scrambled graphics, try releasing the MissingNO Pokémon."

MissingNo is not Togepi, or Lugia, or any real pokemon for that matter. MissingNo is a placeholder for when the hexadecimal data for wild pokemon is incorrect, thus generating an invalid pokemon. No secret Nintendo conspiracy here, just buggy programming.
