  • Starter Mod

    This mod patches a lot of things to bring the best possible playing experience. Here's what it will patch for you:

    • Starter editing - Makes playing as other Pokémon possible
    • High-Res model patching - Prevents your model from disappearing during certain closeups
    • Portrait patching - Shows the default portrait in the absence of a more specific emotion portrait
    • Animation patching - Substitute missing story animations with dungeon ones to avoid the attack animation being used for everything
    • And something else in the scripts specific to Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon that can't be mentioned without revealing spoilers. It is the last item in a similar list in this video if you're fine with being spoiled, or if you've seen it before.

    You must have Java on your computer to use this.

    This has been tested on the North American and European versions of Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, and the North American version of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity. I don't know if will work on the Japanese version of Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, but it will not work on any other version of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity.

    Instructions

    1. On the New Project window, choose "Starter Mod" in the drop-down, and fill in the name with something that makes sense. Then click OK.

    2. Wait until the loading is complete. This is one of the heavier mods, and may take some time even on beefier computers.
    3. Save the solution, to avoid having to repeat step 2 if something goes wrong.
    4. Expand the project you just created and open "fixed_pokemon.bin". You can do this either by double-clicking or by right-clicking and clicking Open.

    5. Edit things to your liking. You should see this when editing Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon (Gates to Infinity has a much simpler interface):

      For the purpose of this guide, I'll do this:

      Things to consider:
      • Each Pokémon must have 4 moves. It's been a while since I tried having less, but I remember things not working with fewer than 4 moves. In my example, I got the first three moves from the level up, and the fourth from Zorua's set of egg moves, although you are not required to stick to these; you can pick anything you want.
      • (PSMD only) The evolution must be the final evolution in the line. If you pick a Pokémon with multiple evolutions, the first on will be used. Refer to the PSMD Pokédex index to find which evolution comes first (for example, if the starter is Eevee, the first evolution is Vaporeon).
    6. Click File -> Save -> Save File.

    7. You can now rebuild the mod-pack. Note that this may take a while.

    hey quick question just for clarification, when you said in step 1, "On the New Project window, choose "Starter Mod" in the drop-down", where is the New project window? I've looked over every possible tab in the program and can't seem to find what makes the "[Project] Starter" folder or the "fixed _pokemon.bin" file as seen in your second picture example. Hopefully i was just being stupid and missed something obvious.

    When I right click on directory, this is all i see.

    Yes, after I do this it just appears in properties under references. It doesn't show as a project folder like in the picture. Is there something i'm supposed to be doing after this to make a project folder?

    yes it shows the window. I just select "starter mod" and name it starter and after its done loading it only shows in references when i check properties of "mod pack"

    Normally, if you click on Directory, then right click on it, then click on create project, selecting starter mod and entering a name, it should create the project, you must have done a mistake somewhere.

    Normally when there's references in the modpack like that, the projects would show up in the solution. Are there any errors listed in the errors tab?

    Looks like you don't have Java installed.

    When I tried to run the game the starter Pokemon remained unchanged. When I saw their information their movesets and abilities were different. They were not matching the information I entered and the original species of the Pokemon. I checked if the starter changes during the gameplay but the starter was still the Pokemon that is meant to be originally and its reflection was missing.

    Sounds like Lua isn't compiling the scripts properly. I've pushed an update to Sky Editor that should capture these so we can learn more:

    Good as I didn't update my version of the mod, I still have the one you gave me and that works fine, but are there new features in the update?

    Hello,

    first of all this is a really good editor. It works flawlessly for the european Explorers of Sky version but it seems it doesnt quite work for the european Super Mystery Dungeon. During the script compiling it always comes to an error.... Ill provide a few screenshots as well as the error message.

    You'll need to recreate the starter project, since all of the lua scripts it uses behind the scenes are broken beyond repair and need to be recreated.

    Nothing substantial. I'm always tweaking things, adding minor features, fixing bugs, or in the case of build 132, introducing new bugs. I haven't done it in a while, but I try to update the Sky Editor blog whenever there's any new notable feature.

    So I tried the older version.... and uhm, while it seems to compile everything correctly, there seems to be some funny things happening. during the selection the modified pokemon(being bulbasaur into Vulpix and charmander into Zorua) share the moveset and ability of the previously selected pokemon. so for example if I change charmander, and first look at squirtle and then go to charmander, he will have the ability and moves of squirtle. bulbasaur for example will have the moves and abilities of froakie. and if I modified bulbasaur and charmander, and go from bulbasaur to charmander, he will just have whatever pokemon bulbasaur copied, so froakie. Same with bulbasaur if I switch from charamnder, bulb will then have the stuff from squirtle.... So in the game itself things are different too... In the reflection it shows the Pokemon I wanted to be, Vulpix, but ingame Im still Bulbasaur, with the ability of froakie/squirtle and the attacks of froakie/squirtle.... same probably with my partner, a charmander with froakie/squirtle moves and abilities.... oh yeah, during close ups, probably when the better models are used, the character simply disappears but I guess thats normal considering its an older build.... However when your partner is first shown, it was the Zorua instead of charmander model, but when it went back to the normal cutscene it was just charmander again. So there seems to be something wrong.... I only played until you meet your partner, but yeah in the dungeons during the intro I was still a bulbasaur with froakies stuff...

     

    It may just be an issue with the german version, as the german version made a few extra edits to the game. For example, the player character is always male and also refered to as such, and the partner is always female, and also refered to as such, no matter what choices you do during the questions.

    Edit: ok i got it working with a different base rom. however, after all my edits, the game freezes after getting to the section after the personality test. testing the base rom doesnt produce the same error. im running the rom on Citra Nightly. The changes are a starter mod, as follows:

    all starters have 4 moves. when i built the mod i built it as a decrypted .3ds file if that helps, trying other options now.

    ok, tried it out on my homebrew 3ds using luma and still crashed after completing the personality test. thankfully this time i have a crash dump:

    Yeah, it's important to use a decrypted ROM. Encrypted ones aren't supported, and because of legal concerns, I have no plans to add support.

However when your partner is first shown, it was the Zorua instead of charmander model, but when it went back to the normal cutscene it was just charmander again. So there seems to be something wrong.... I only played until you meet your partner, but yeah in the dungeons during the intro I was still a bulbasaur with froakies stuff...

     

    It may just be an issue with the german version, as the german version made a few extra edits to the game. For example, the player character is always male and also refered to as such, and the partner is always female, and also refered to as such, no matter what choices you do during the questions.

    I believe I've fixed the issue in the latest version. Please try again with this one.

    I keep trying to get the Starter mod I create to work. I save the file and then rebuild the modpack but nothing is happening.

    First of all, thanks for making this! Very useful~ But I have some questions. The starter mod seems to be working just fine, but I can't seem to set the name of my partner and I... It also doesn't give me the full list of partners. Everything else works as normal so far. Is there anything I can do?

    You can use the left and right arrows to see the other partners. As for the nickname, that's a known limitation. You can, however, change it from the main menu once you progress a little in the story.
