1. [sprite]450[/sprite] #450: Hippowdon Type: Ground Ability: Sand Stream / Sand Force (Dream World) Base stats: 108/112/118/68/74/47 Difficulty: Intermediate Hello desert hippo! Hippowdon is famous in gen 4 and onwards for being the second sandstorm inducer! That means that Hippowdon was a very common pokemon due to it's hefty bulk, strength, some interesting moves and above all, sand stream, making it a viable option for any weather team. In gen 5, however, it's lost it's status as an OU and now is treading the path of UU, unfortunately. What? Why? Well, let's start of with it's strengths. First and foremost, look at it's physical stats. Pretty nice eh? This thing is probably, in Gen 5, amongst the bulkiest pokemon in all of UU with it's high HP and defence, making it bulkier than Donphan, the most common UU. Hippowdon's goodiness doesn't stop there, since it has an impressive base attack of 112, allowing it to hit things it doesn't like very well. It's ground typing is excellent and doesn't have too many weaknesses either. With it's ability, sand stream, it induces a semi-permanent sandstorm. This is the primary reason for using it. Being a great inducer of weather, sending it out will support your entire team, if need be. Unlike the underestimated DW Politoed, however, Hippowdon can still serve well after summoning weather. It hits hard, can set up stealth rocks, be a great phazer with roar/whirlwind, and my personal favourite, immediate recovery with slack off! I also would prefer Sand Stream over Sand force, since Hippowdon requires a sandstorm to make use of it, unless you have a Tyranitar in tow or something. Hippowdon is used primarily as a phazer or defensive instead of a utility/offensive such as Donphan. If you need a physical UU pokemon that can take hits very well and hit back well physically or need a pokemon with sandstream, here you go! But like all pokemon, it's far from perfect. In OU, which is trolled by many physical attackers in the past, Hippowdon's entrance to UU brings many, and I mean many, special attackers. This is his sore spot, as Hippwdon has a bit of trouble dealing with special attackers. Many of them can easily come in and shy Hippowdon away, since unlike Tyranitar, he does not get a special defence boost from weather. Also, poisoning him can easily cause him to perish over time, and if taunted, he cannot phaze at all. Hippowdon is very scared of any water type special attacker faster than it or able to take a hit. Empoleon may be weak to ground, but if timed right, can jump right in and destroy it. Grass pokemon scare it a lot too, such as Venusaur, Lilligant, Whimsicott, the list could go on. Also, many electric pokemon can take a huge chunk of his HP with a super effective hidden power. It's also tremendously slow, and this can be a problem. If he tries using rocks, DW Xaut/Espeon can come in and wall him very well, unless he has crunch or stone edge. Pretty much any nameable special attacking water, grass, or ice type cause him to flee in terror. As mentioned earlier, toxic and burns really cripple Hippowdon without a cleric. However, despite this, Hippowdon is a fearsome new addition to UU and caution should be taken when you see one, for this sand hippopotamus can cause a lot of problems for any team, and serve well on your team, regardless if you need the weather or not. Notable moves: Stealth rock, Earthquake, Crunch, Ice fang, fire fang, Rock Slide, Stone Edge, yawn, Curse, Slack off, Toxic, roar, whirlwind, Revenge, Super Power, Stockpile, Useful Items: Leftovers, rocky helmet, sitrus berry, lum berry, ground gem, Counters: Empoleon, Slowbro, Vaporeon, Milotic, Roserade, Sceptile, Jellicent, Blastoise, Ferrothorn, Starmie, Quagsire, Torterra, Whimsicott, Lilligant

Eek. Alakazam, you monster! Oh wait, it is a monster.... nevermind. <img src="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure.png" alt=":/" srcset="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure@2x.png 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Yyyyyeah, I don't see that my mentality in that sort of metagame would last long if that's the system. Man, Hitmonlee would've been so fragile it's not even funny!

Our tastes are drastically different, I suppose. I mean, you think Volcarona's... Not pretty, but for me, compared to all the other bug pokemon, I think of it as majestic. But... that's me. >.<

 3.

My... Gosh. That's... Ridiculous. Chansey with 105 special attack?! That thing can take hits enough as it is! And Alakazam must've been uber by then. I mean.... 120 base speed, 135/135.... Umm... Trolldom? I declare uber ness. <img src="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure.png" alt=":/" srcset="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure@2x.png 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Eh... I personally love Volcarona's design, I'm not sure what could be done with it, but that's my opinion anyways.

And I'm surprised at the fact that Alakazam, once feared by all, is now like, "oh, Alakazam? Sucker Punch/Pursuit!"

Erm, I apologize for that. However, if you want, instead of the actual meaning of it, you can say f stands for flip. <img src="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/laugh.png" alt="xD" srcset="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/laugh@2x.png 2x" width="20" height="20" /> I kid, but still. I'll stop.

I'm confused... How come Muk didn't have 105 sp. def? Was it different in the past? I don't get that. <img src="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure.png" alt=":/" srcset="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure@2x.png 2x" width="20" height="20" /> Unless there was no special stats or whatever, I wouldn't know. I guess Muk is now really awesome regardless of that though. And Heracross... It still scares me to this day.

If you think about it, Volcarona is meant to be an epic pokemon. It's not a psuedo (hehe, it has 135/105/100 and ISN'T one) but according to the dex, it's supposed to be very powerful, and was "a replacement for the sun for a while". Thus, it's a tad bit understandable it has it, due to it's power and stuff. However, explain why Seviper gets flamethrower and Altaria gets Flamethrower and Earthquake? Neither make sense. Don't get me completely wrong; I questioned why Volcarona got it too.

 5.

Indeed... And I don't know why you would delete any folder from the program in the first place. Like, wtf? And an elemental rhyperior? That would be the equivalent of teaching Alakazam psycho cut. <img src="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure.png" alt=":/" srcset="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure@2x.png 2x" width="20" height="20" />

One guy was bragging about a bulk up mew sweep... Huh.

My friend is like that. Alomomola and Blissey can easily wall his pokes, but my other pokes that may need set up (like my UU team) can't do so because he just keeps attacking me. >.<

An older example of a pokemon with all the right moves in all the right places is Muk. Yes, they're not superior or anything, but some of the older pokes do have stats kept in the right places. Albeit lesser, but still there. And if a pokemon can learn a move that it can't make much use of, why bother complaining about it?

I'm not really afraid of noobs, but it can be annoying because they throw you off guard. And I too learned the hard way that you shouldn't set up on them. It's unfortunate. <img src="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure.png" alt=":/" srcset="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure@2x.png 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Eh... Mine has rest... To make use of the sp. def's gains and usually because rocks cripple Volcarona. Also, if she gets hit by electric types, she'll usually get paralyzed again, so that's the case, (I use Lum berry to heal her). She still fares well, but Heatran completely wall her.

I don't know if it'll hit uber, but chances are it won't. As for it's movepool, you're really pressured to use it's great STAB, Quiver Dance, then filler, which can be moonlight/sunlight, psychic, Hurricane, or Hidden Power. It stops there. Also, rocks really wreck it's performance. <img src="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure.png" alt=":/" srcset="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure@2x.png 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Wtf... Actually many people play pokemon online and don't even know much about competitive battling or what is useful for what... <img src="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure.png" alt=":/" srcset="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure@2x.png 2x" width="20" height="20" />

As for Volcarona, you probably could be right. However, some sets involve it healing up, and if it doesn't have hidden power ground (which it doesn't use 24/7) then Heatran is a counter. Not everything is foolproof, of course. Paralyzing it actually is also an option, but it's mainly a matter of not letting it set up, which means just purely attacking it. Taunting it is useful too. It all depends on the team and situation. It's not over powered though, as most of the time it dies because of weather or rocks. <img src="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure.png" alt=":/" srcset="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure@2x.png 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Although it is strong, I don't think it is versatile enough movepool wise (it's STAB is great but not versatile ENOUGH). Eh. I think it's one of those really deadly pokemonz that will then get pwned by something introduced later, or people aren't aggressive enough. Tiering is very bias to me because it's based on usage.

Most Haxorus don't use Draco Meteor. And if it did, wish + protect. I'm not saying Alomomola completely counters it, but for an NU it can do justice.

Yeah... But Salamence has more bulk than Flygon and it's a Psuedo legendary. If I'm not mistaken, out of all the psuedo dragons, Salamence has the least bulk. But for dragon evolutions, Haxorus probably is one of the strongest but not most durable. It is by no means fragile, so wtf?

And scrafty isn't OP... But it's so versatile for little to no reason. For Volcarona, sure, it can rip stuff apart very easily, but it does obviously have some counters. Blissey will be able to poison/wall even a +4 life orb (mine could anyway), Heatran walls it indefinitely, and water types scare it off such as Tentacruel. It's hard to counter, but in my opinion unlike Haxorus it actually HAS as counter(s).

 9.

Yeah, Haxorus will surely, 99.99% of the time take out another pokemon once set out. Whereas Salamence, it's a threat sure, but it's not going on a spree if you pack the right moves (almomola comes to mind because of toxic + wish +protect + filler, as an NU troll) Yeah, Haxorus is newb, but I don't think it's overrated. Otherwise, we wouldn't be saying this in the first place. It's obviously more fragile than even Salamence, probably the most fragile psuedo dragon without intimidate, but Haxorus' limited movepool is compensated by it's RIDICULOUS killing power. I mean... If something is sent out and it is guaranteed that'll kill SOMETHING, then there's something wrong there. Especially if there is a very, very high likelihood it'll kill more than one.

I tend to think Volcarona isn't OP because of A) rocks spammage and B) simply attack it physically and immediately and it's no threat. Random, but a lot of people consider it so.

 10.

If there is no counter for Haxorus, wouldn't that make it eligible for being an uber if it's isn't easily countered? And to me that "fast enough" speed is bull, considering Speed Boost Blaziken IS an uber (I checked their site, and it's individual page). It has base 80 speed and relies on speed boost to get fast, whereas Haxorus has an ample opportunity to use Dragon Dance and slaughter whatever comes in it's way. Salamence is only a tad bit faster with a base speed of 100, and it was declared uber. I understand it had a more varied movepool, but serious, having a +1 DD Haxorus that has a base 147 attack should be uber. And "oh, it's fragile" it only has two weaknesses, whereas Salamence has three, one of which is quite exploitable (ice of course). Whereas Salamence had intimidate to slow down attackers and to make it bulkier, Haxorus makes up for it to be able to taken on it's foes just with a single dragon dance. It surprises me.

 11.

When Haxorus was leaked (only in trailer footage) I was like "ooh wutz dat it looks cool!" And Haxorus looks cool, but like a lot of pokemon, I hold grudges if it's too powerful so I refuse to use it. Thank goodness my bulky pokemon are female! (Hippowdon and Umbreon). I just don't think there's a pokemon that can counter Haxorus... You just got to be lucky... Because mold breaker just cuts through anything, Dragon Claw + Earthquake/Rock Slide or X-Scissor (can it learn that?)/Dragon Dance is nearly uncounterable. It might hit uber pretty soon. Why? It's a killing machine. Sure, it's "fragile" but not enough to be able to be taken down by a Hippowdon's earthquake or a defensive Swampert's ice punch. And here I'm standing why Salamence was uber... In fact, why was it uber?

 12.

Now that I think about it... All the psychics introduced (or most) are bulky psychics, but Reuniclus tops them all off. jerk.

I do respect a lot of the pokemon that were introduced, like heatmor and Lilligant. Like Escavalier though, movepool problems. At least Beheeyem stands out from most of the new psychics because of abilities and stuff. A lot of new bugs introduced are actually quite good... Durant, Volcarona, Scolipede... I like the bugs and stuff. They generally through out a lot of stuff at us, some of it worked well (Bisharps'... Interesting, Lilligant/Whimsicott are cute, etc), but some of them just... A few of the uglier pokemonz are the most beast..

And.... wtf

Yeah... Heatmor is a good example of a rival that may beat it's, well, rival, one on one in the right circumstances, but aside from that it has very little use. It should have an evo that is bulkier and perhaps more versatile so that Heatmor's not totally useless. I might try it, but I don't suspect it'll work too well in the end.

As for Lilligant, my brother is deeply in love with that one. But yes, it's movepool is a major killer, forcing anyone using it to have hidden power something on it. It's a shame... Some interesting new pokemon, like I don't know, Escavalier, leavanny, Lilligant, heatmor, Beheeyem, Gothitelle, etc are just really under powered, it's shameful (with some exceptions, such as 2HKO for CB Megahorn Escavalier)

 14.

Indeed. It's as if they are more concerned about how well it does in battle than what it actually is... We could have a puffball with no features and it would have unbeatable defenses. I just wish they could've made a cooler looking dark/fighting type that actually wasn't so OP... Some of the new pokemon though are under powered... Take Heatmore for example, it's supposed to be better than Durant, but durant for some reason can learn rock slide and stuff and absolutely destroy it. Then there's Lilligant, nice looking but has a really, really limited movepool... Grab something that can take hidden power fire/grass move and there you go.

It's kind of like that for me with Yanmega... Yanmega's awesome, but I can't seem to use it well. I run speed boost, the works with a move for coverage, and it never sweeps. But it can sweep me

 15.

almost All the fifth gen OU are like that. Perfectly aligned stats, meh appearance, weird but versatile move pool. The "meh" ones include Ferrothorn, Scrafty, Conkeldurr, and somewhat excadrill... Haxorus at the very least looks cool. Hydreigon isn't OP thank goodness, it's just versatile. If it had 135 special attack then maybe but it doesn't.

Yeah... Things that are actually based off of things that are possibly related to dragons should get it. Tyranitar gets it, but it's not something it always uses or needs to be good. I also dislike how Scrafty gets the PERFECT abilities to do it's job: sweeping. Shed skin? bye bye burn. Need some attack after you take down a foe? Moxie! Need a recovery? Drain punch? need a stat raiser? Dragon Dance! And it can survive air slashes from perfectly capable pokemons like Togekiss.

 16.

Never really "justified" it getting dragon dance. Reason? Well, if you haven't noticed, Scrafty could loosely be based off a lizard, so therefore it gets moves similar to dragons. I don't know, but that's the only reason I see why it could learn it. It's probably one of those rather poorly designed fifth gen pokemon (I personally think it looks stupid) that for some reason got all the right moves and stats. It's... Dumb. Crawdaunt can learn it? Well, again, random, but it's not ridiculously durable and hits hard kinda pokemon. As for Tropius.. It's also fine it has it. But I beg to ask: WHY?

No, it's not that Hippowdon's too bulky for FerroAIDS, it's that it's too awesome. <img src="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/biggrin.png" alt=":D" srcset="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/biggrin@2x.png 2x" width="20" height="20" />

 17.

Yeah I'm sorry, I realized that the second time I read it, but I couldn't edit it because I was doing something. Fail. <img src="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure.png" alt=":/" srcset="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure@2x.png 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Agreed though. When he said why does a non-dragon like pokemon get to learn Dragon Dance I'll just say... Crawdaunt.

I think Bertha gave me the most trouble because of gliscor and her Hippowdon. Hippowdon never was taken down by a single leaf blade from Leafeon... grr

 18.

hey, Howl's moving castle avvy! Nice!

"I'm not the only one to like this power creep". Meaning?

I usually train on the E4. I'm pretty sure I battled them more than thirty times. ;/

 19.

Interesting... I guess I agree with the scrafty thing, but some things I don't. I don't like the kami trio, but magic guard was given to clefable beforehand. Oh well. Meh. His opinion.

 20.

Not currently... But I can. Not for hours on end though; gotta do stuff. <img src="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure.png" alt=":/" srcset="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure@2x.png 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Meet you on project pokemon then.

 21.

Indeed... I found it hard to believe that people thought that Rampardos, Rhyperior and Porygon-Z would be either OU or OP... And look at these guys. It's ridiculous. And it's just going to get worse, if game freak makes the wrong choices.

You could compare Alakazam to Reuniclus in terms of sheer power (albeit Reuniclus is bulkier and slower), but I really hope they don't introduce a new pokemon that completely outclasses Alakazam... Better typing, abilities, movepool, and stats, of course.

It's just as if all these new pokemon are becoming obsolete. Volcarona is the only really powerful new pokemon that I admire, and some others I like are powerful in their own ways but not enough to outclass other pokemon. The way this is headed, each gen is just going to replace all the old. I can understand the bad ones at least, but stuff like Machamp... ugh.

 22.

Yeah, seriously. It'd be more fair if it had 130 attack, but game freak refused and said we should bump it up to ridiculous levels.

My friend, Torrin (as he's known on teh internetz) kinda uses nooby pokemon.... I had a Emboar, Carracosta, Mandibuzz, Eelektross... NU stuff. Then pops up stuff like Conkeldurr, Haxorus, Chandelure... Beastly stuff. And then he is happy when he beats me. And I'm like.... "Uh... Haxorus?" This was when black was introduced.

Although his sportsmanship has improved a little...

It could have, but I don't see why it would. I mean, if you think about it, most people don't bother to adjust the genders so perhaps that's why. It has the perfect abilities, and yet it's DW ability is Unnerve... That should be it's standard berry for crying out loud. Alomomola can surely survive a +1 Outrage 100% less it crits.

 23.

Heh, heh, I tend to think only about the pokemon that I really like I guess... Or the ones that drive me absolutely crazy because their so annoying to fight or that they are overpowered and overshadow other similar pokemon and look far worse CONKELDURR!

Hate it so much...

Yeah, I remember having a Floatzel in the beginning of Pokemon Pearl... Good times. Although I traded it off for something else... <img src="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure.png" alt=":/" srcset="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure@2x.png 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Yeah, Haxorus is pretty newb. I mean, 147 base attack? Really game freak? Oh, 125 attack's meh to them, but alas... I seriously hope they don't introduce such crazy pokemon again... Because we don't have enough pokemon trolling all over the place do we? Or is gamefreak doing this intentionally to create or reboot an entirely new metagame? >.<

I don't know how Lugia get's obliterated by it and Alomomola just manages to survive it... If it's dragon claw then... Eek.

 24.

Haha, Mewtwo's comment... Sorry I thought it was a tad bit funneh.

Anyway, I completely forgot it existed, <img src="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/laugh.png" alt="xD" srcset="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/laugh@2x.png 2x" width="20" height="20" />.

Yeah, I was never a huge fan of Floatzel, but it's cool I guess. I could try it... I remember getting beaten by it. Nonetheless a swift water STARTER would be awesome. And you already know what I mean.

Wait... If Hippowdon dropped to UU possibly due to being OHKOed by Haxorus, how come Tyranitar hasn't? It's even less physically bulky and has to worry about random brick breaks. However, Tyranitar is more versatile and does have more special defence, so I guess that's why... Haxorus is annoying. >.<

 25.

Herm... I think it would be cool to have a fast physical attacking water type pokemon. And I mean fast upon the start. I know starmie is there, but i mean a fast physical. Starmie is the only one that stands out from the rest of the bulkier water types.

Back to Mandibuzz. Yeah, it's defined a role, and I suppose it's sort of obvious what it does... Samurott, no. I might try Samurott for an LU team (random tier is random) because I think it's pretty good, not formidable or amazing, but still good. So I'll try it.

Sand stream isn't all bad, it just resets leftovers for Umbreon. However, she can still wall things fairly well, and whenever big bad Hippo gets poisoned or threatened by a special attack, Umbreon comes to save the day. I don't really use Hippowdon as a physical truck, but more like a physical tank. So far, it's done well, so I'll sit with it. Don't understand fully why it dropped to UU though.
