This Pokémon is a rare variant that is capable of Gigantamaxing, and can only be obtained via Max Raid Battles in the Wild Area. While always available for capture (if found) in a den in the Wild Area, an event from November 15, 2019 to early January 2020 made it more commonly found in Pokémon Shield, by having it appear in dens normally not associated with it. To be able to encounter the event variant, user's Switch must be connected to the internet, with the Mystery Gift>Get Wild Area News option used during the event period.. Alternatively user must have connected to the internet and redeemed a Mystery Gift during the event period.

In Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver, when players bring an event Fateful Encounter Arceus to the Ruins of Alph, the player will get transported to the Sinjoh Ruins, and get to choose to receive a Dialga, Palkia or Giratina. Each of them will come with their respective power orbs, and this is the only way to obtain the Griseous Orb in Pokemon HeartGold & Soulsilver, as the item cannot be traded. While impossible to obtain legitimately, a Hall of Origin Arceus would allow the player to return to the Sinjoh Ruins once last time via the Ruins of Alph. In Pokémon Black, if the player doesn't capture Reshiram at N's Castle, due to having a full party and full PC Box, Reshiram can be encountered at the highest level of the Dragonspiral Tower after becoming Champion. In Pokémon White 2, after the player defeats N in the ruins of N's Castle, the player will be given a Light Stone. When the Light Stone is brought to the peak of the Dragonspiral Tower, Reshiram will awaken, and can be challenged to a battle. Reshiram cannot be encountered shiny in Generation 5.
