Greetings from a 'somewhat techie' dad. My son is 10 years old and has a Nintendo DSi with Soul Silver, Diamond and Pearl, and Platinum. He desperately wants to create a Mew 3 character / Pokémon sprite. Has has a DSi Action Replay cartridge and USB cable, and we have downloaded Pokésav. Upon reading the FAQ, I'm confused. A lot of this stuff is over my head. I want to help him out, but unsure how to get an editable file from the game or Action Replay cartridge into Pokésav. I don't want to screw up his game just to try to create a custom character.

Question for the experts ... is 10 years old way too young to be messing around with this stuff? He's on the cusp of understanding a lot of this and through YouTube is finding out about all kinds of customization. He really wants to do it but I'm afraid a lot of this is over my head.

Any feedback appreciated. He is obsessing over Mew 3! LOL.

Note to self... read topic CAREFULLY.

I was talking about the joys of Pokegen to create Pokemon to import into the games... doh!

The short answer is no, he can't sprite-hack, at least not with just an Action Replay. Saving and editing and whatever within the game means you can only edit the information that';s available within the game. I can give Butterfree the Flame Body ability, for example, but I can't make up my own ability.

Eh, I'm 18 and I still end up having to start my whole game over because I end up using malfunctioning codes. Kids of your son's age may be smart and game-savy, but they also get too excited too quickly, and it's way too easy to make a critical mistake.

As for Mew3, in case you don't kinow (though I'm sure you do), Mew3 is non-existent. It is simply the mis-interpretation of Mewtwo in Giovanni's mind suit.

Also, as stated above, you can only customize existing pokemon with existing abilities and moves with an AR and PokeSav/PokeGen.

Thanks so much for the replies.

We thought about it for a few days. My son was just bursting to try Pokésav and tonight he looked up some YouTube videos on how to edit characters. He was convinced he knew what steps to take and used a Magikarp as the base for the edit. Once he had the code generated via Pokésav, I used an XML editor and added the necessary code components to the Codejunkies US Pokemon Soul Silver codelist from his DSi Action Replay (C:\Program Files\Datel\Action Replay DSi Code Manager\local_codelists). Once edited, I deleted the Soul Silver code list off the DSi AR cart and uploaded the edited codelist from the PC. It worked. He turned the Magikarp into a shiny Darkrai Level 100 with all kinds of powers. He is so thrilled. He must have thanked me 10 times so far. But really, he did most of the work!

I'll bet he's up at the crack o' dawn tomorrow smiling and using his new Darkrai to wreak havoc! He said to tell all thanks for the replies on this forum.

Ah, to be 10 again!!! I only had Vectrex at that age. Google that!

You may want to try Pokegen. Rather than working on a complete save you can use this program to create a single Pokemon. There are quite a number of .pkm files around here that can be used with it, so you can get a good idead of the sort of information to add. The program can generate your Action Replay codes for the Pokemon. You have to assign it a slot in either your party or the PC box (my preferred method as you don't inadvertantly overwite one of your "good" Pokemon").

You can download it from here...
