Trading usually isn’t an issue, provided the communication option chosen works.

The issues typically comes from transferring to other games. 

Gen 3 -> Gen 4: Gen 3 needs to be retail cart
Gen 4 -> Gen 5: Gen 4 needs to be retail cart
Gen 5 -> Gen 6: Gen 5 needs to be retail carr

Alright, so what do you recommend I do?

I play HG, PL and B2

I am looking to buy legit game carts, but it can take time, I don't mind getting a second DSi with r4 and give it to my little bro, use it for trading when I need.

 

Save editors my best bet?

Trading between HeartGold and Platinum should work between flashcards. Transferring to Black 2 would require at least one of the Gen 4 games to be a retail cart, or save editors.
