[Guide] How to Fix the Blue Error Screen when Accessing your PC (Pokemon Black/White)

So you're playing Pokemon Black/White and you try and visit your PC box, only to encounter...

the Blue Error Screen!

(duh duh duh *dramatic reverb*)

What causes the Blue Error Screen?

The blue error screen is the result of the game encountering data that has somehow been corrupted. This corrupted data can't be read and causes the game to crash. There could be several different culprits, but the one I've seen most often (and the focus of this guide) is

incorrect or improperly used AR codes for WonderCard Pokemon

.

In the specific case of the WonderCard codes, the failed code

generates corrupted data in two of your PC boxes: 6 and 7

.

Corrupted data in my PC boxes? Does that mean all my Pokemon are gone?!

If the issue is the result of failed WonderCard codes, the answer is

NO

. From what I have seen, it is only the EMPTY SPACES in those two boxes that get corrupted, not the Pokemon themselves. The Pokemon are perfectly fine and can even be rescued if you have the means.

So, how do I fix it?

What you need to do is

overwrite the corrupted data in the empty spaces of box 6 and 7

. You can accomplish this by either manually adding Pokemon to those empty spaces (Methods 1 and 3), or deleting ALL the data from the boxes (Method 2).

1.

NDS Backup Adapter Plus/R4 Save Dongle + Pokegen

This Method is recommended for those who want to save the Pokemon in the affected boxes and don't mind purchasing a very handy device to accomplish it.

Required Hardware

:

  Reveal hidden contents

[*]NDS Backup Adapter Plus, R4i Save Dongle, or something similar.
[*]Computer running windows XP or later
Required Software
:
  Reveal hidden contents

• PokeGen
  
  
• NDS Adapter Plus software/drivers
  OR
  R4 Save Dongle software/drivers
  OR
  the required software/drivers for whatever other adapter you choose.
  
  
  NOTE: There is a link to download PokeGen on the R4SD page, but it's to an outdated version, so DON'T use it!

Process
:
  Reveal hidden contents

Using the USB adapter, dump your save file and open it with PokeGen. Create and keep a backup copy of your save before editing it, just in case.

Now, fill any and all empty spaces in boxes 6 and 7 with Pokemon. Create your own or just duplicate ones you already have, but get those spaces filled! After you've done this, save the changes and use your adapter to restore your save to your cart. Start up your game and access your PC!

PROS and CONS of this Method
:
  Reveal hidden contents

PROS

:

• VERY easy to do
  
  
• You can use the Adapter to back up and restore other game saves, even some 3DS saves (Pokemon X/Y excluded).
  
  
• You can save the Pokemon that were in the affected boxes.
  
  

CONS

:

• A bit costly ($20 for the R4 Save Dongle, $35 for NDS Adapter Plus)
  
  

2.
ARDS/ARDSi + box delete codes
This Method is recommended for those who don't want to purchase anything extra (assuming you already have an ARDS/ARDSi) and who don't mind losing whatever Pokemon are in boxes 6 and 7.
Required Hardware
:
  Reveal hidden contents

Required Software
:
  Reveal hidden contents

No software is

required

(as you can add codes to an ARDS/ARDSi manually) but if you still have the USB connector, using their software is recommended, just for ease of use. If you don't have the software, you can download it on the manufacturers website:

• ARDS software
  
  
• ARDSi software
  
  

If you really want to avoid using the software and you have an ARDSi with an SD card, you can always add codes by hand by editing the XML file.

Process
:
  Reveal hidden contents

Use the following codes to delete boxes 6 and 7. This will clear the corrupted data from the empty spaces, but will also delete any Pokemon in the boxes.

The activate buttons are Select+Up.

You need to run the game with BOTH of these codes checked, because you need to be able to activate them both at the same time.

After trying the codes, try opening your PC.

DO NOT SAVE

until you are certain that it worked and that you are happy with the result. Though these codes have been tested, it is always a good idea to check your other boxes before saving.

PROS and CONS of this Method

• no cost (again, assuming you already own or have access to an ARDS/ARDSi)
  
  
• This is a fast method, as you only need to add some codes to your ARDSi and try them out.
  
  
CONS
:
• You are deleting the Pokemon in the boxes, with no way to recover them.
  
  
• No way (using JUST the ARDS/ARDSi) to back up your save file before attempting the fix.




3.
DS/DS Lite + DS Flash Cart + Wifi + FTPClient + SaveGame Manager + PokeGen
This method is recommended for those who have a DS or DS Lite and Flash Cart and access to a DS/DSLite-compatible Wifi router.
Required Hardware

• SmallFTP
  
  
• SaveGame Manager
  
  
  Note: If you are using the DSTwo flash cart, you need to download
  savegame_manager_0.2.4

Process
:
  Reveal hidden contents

This is a slightly more complex method that requires more stuff and basic knowledge of FTP and IPs. Once you've gathered the numerous elements of this, we need to configure everything.

Here's a checklist:

1. Open SmallFTP and set it up with the following settings:

• Settings > General > You don't need to change anything but take note of the FTP port number (the default is usually 21)
  
  
• Settings > Advance Settings > Use Local IP [checked]
  
  
• Settings > Users > Add > Create a username and password, add directory (leave virtual path as "/") and set the Physical path to whatever folder you wish. It will look something like this: "C:\PokemonSaveBackup"
  (
  also see "A Note about the FTP settings" below
  )
  , add new Permissions as L/R/W"
  
  
• Server > Save Config
  
  

2. Patch the SaveGame Manager rom for your Flash Cart (if necessary)

3. Find and write down your computer's IP address. (to find it, open a command prompt, type "ipconfig", and press enter.)

4. Open the savegame_manager configuration file and change the following:

• ftp_ip:[your computer's IP address]
  
  
• ftp_user:[your smallFTP username]
  
  
• ftp_pass:[your smallFTP password]
  
  
• ftp_port:[your smallFTP port number]
  
  

5. Copy the SaveGame Manager rom and savegame_manager configuration settings file to your memory card for your Flash Cart

6. Go back to smallFTP and click the green play button.

. There are four parts to it, but he walks you through the whole process (no shots of the DS, though - he just types up what you SHOULD see on a notepad file)

Boot up your DS with the flash cart and start up the SaveGame Manager program. Choose the Backup option, and follow the prompts (you're basically hotswapping to your Pokemon game). Once the save is backed up to your computer, create a copy (just in case!) and open and edit it with PokeGen, filling all empty spaces in boxes 6 and 7 with Pokemon. Save it (be sure it's in the FTP directory!), and then go back to your DS, reinsert the flash cart, Start up the SaveGame Manager and choose Restore. Follow the prompts, wait, and once your save is restored, try it out!

A Note about the FTP settings

: When setting your directory in smallFTP, make SURE that the folder you point to exists and that it is spelled correctly! If the folder the path points to does not exist or if you didn't type the name properly, the save file will be backed up to whatever folder the smallFTP.exe file is in! This isn't a problem when backing up your save FROM your DS cart, but it does become a problem when you try to restore the save TO your DS cart. The SaveGame Manager won't see the save file if it is still in the smallFTP folder instead of the folder listed in the directory path

• Produces the same results as method 1 (A full save dump)
  
  
• No cost if you have all the hardware (all the programs are free)
  
  
• Not terribly hard if you are even remotely familiar with FTP and IP addresses
  
  

CONS

:

• Requires the use of a DS or DS Lite (CANNOT be a DSi/XL/3DS)
  
  
• Longer set up than the first two methods
  
  

Once you have successfully accessed your PC, save your game! After that you can use boxes 6 and 7 normally.

So, now that you've fixed your save, lets answer a very important question:

How do I avoid this error in the future?

First,
NEVER EVER save after an AR code fails
!
You should NEVER NEED to save your game for a code to simply take effect because that is what the trigger buttons are for. Remember, an AR code (working or non-working) is ONLY permanent when you save!
Also, you want to make sure you are using good codes and using them properly. If you are unsure of a code or can't get it to work, there are threads on the forum here where you can request help.
If are having trouble with a code that others have gotten to work, you are either:
a) Not pressing the correct trigger buttons for your code
b) Trying to use the code in the wrong place (the continue screen instead of in your game)
b) Not opening the menu after you press the trigger buttons*

(this is REQUIRED for implementing codes for Event Pokemon with Wonder Cards).

What if I tried this and it didn't work?

These methods were specifically written to deal with the problem created by incorrect WonderCard Pokemon codes (since that is the most common cause I've seen). If that is not what caused your PC error, then your problem may not be in the specific PC boxes we target in this guide. But never fear! We can use the following method to detect where the problem lies:
  Reveal hidden contents

Go to the GTS (standard, not negotiations) and start the process to offer a Pokemon for trade. It will open your Party and PC. When it does, slowly cycle through your PC boxes (going right) until you encounter the error. Note what the last box was, and then restart the process, going left in the boxes this time. Take note of the last box you are on BEFORE the error is triggered. The box or boxes that are causing problems are the one(s) you are trying to switch to when the error occurs.

For example, if you are on box 5, and the error occurs when you try to switch to box 6, then you know that something is wrong in box 6. Going the other direction, if you are on box 8 and the error occurs when you try to switch to box 7, then you also know there is a problem in box 7.

NOTE: This detection method no longer works due to Nintendo discontinuing the Nintendo Wifi Connection service for the DS Pokemon titles.
However, you can still fix your game by either using the PokeGen-using methods above to fill the empty spaces in your boxes or look for possible corrupted Pokemon, or you can use your ARDS/ARDSi to delete the boxes one by one until you find which one is causing the error. Remember, if you DON'T save, the ARDS/ARDSi code is NOT permanent, so you can still salvage your other boxes of Pokemon once you figure out which box is causing the problem.
Remember to run the game with all of the box codes you need checked and use them all before attempting to open the PC (otherwise it won't work).

If you weren't trying to use a Wonder Card code, the problem could exist in another box. If that's the case, there's a detection method for figuring out which box is the problem in my guide.

I have this issue with box one in my black 2 cart but so far I haven't been able to find a code to delete the box for black 2. I've tried the black 1 code and it did work, i can access my box one, but it causes box 24 to be named ??????????? and when i switch to 24 from 1 and 1 from 24 the game crashes, as if there's a corrupted phantom box in between. I have also tried the box 1 and 24 delete code and it still doesn't work. My question is, does anyone know where a code to delete a box for black 2 is?

Try Pokegen and see if it will generate a code to delete one or more Pokemon.

I made an account on this site just to thank you for this guide.

I'm a long-time Pokémon player, and since X & Y has introduced so many pro-competitive options to the game, I decided to try out PokéGen to give me a head start.

One thing led to another, and I ended up having a corrupt Box 1. Thanks so much for showing how to access the individual boxes, that was a stroke of genius!

I was completely able to recover all of my Pokémon (since Box 1 was empty due to Poké Transporter)!

I had a question regarding the codes and that was if you knew of any way to use a code to delete a certain slot in the specified box(e.g. Box 7 Slot 5)? It just so happens that the corrupted box has all of my pokemon that I am transferring from previous generation up to X/Y and I know where the empty slot is that is getting corrupted. It would be amazing if you knew of a code that could pin-point the specific slot. I did some internet searching and haven't found any such luck, so I was hoping you might be able to help a little.

Sorry to Necro an old thread, however I went through the trouble of joining up just to simply say thank you for the fix! I ran into this issue last night and broke out in a cold sweat over losing the few event pokemon i had on my White version. I used 3 of the box delete codes (1, 6 and 7) and after that my PC was back to normal! Luckily i didn't have any pokemon stored in those boxes so I was more than fine simply deleting the data. Again, thank you so much for developing this fix!

I have a question. How do I connect to the GTS if Nintendo has disabled the the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection part and it no longer works? I've got the error screen on my PC in Pokemon White and I tried the 6/7 delete Box codes but when I went to open the PC the error screen came still. How do I fix this?

WOW. Life got away from me again I apologize, man. Anyway, I checked, and you are right, sir. Because Nintendo discontinued the wifi services for these games, the detection method no longer works. At this point, I would suggest you load all the box delete codes and just go through them one by one. Alternatively, you could get one of the save dongles and dump your save and edit it directly. I know it costs money, but it's SO easy with PokeGen, and will allow you to save all your pokemon. Out of curiosity, what code were you using before this error came up? Was it a wonder card code?

This helped me a ton. I wouldn't have thought to clear boxes 6 & 7 when my issue was occurring when I was in box 1. I am playing Black 2 and this thread still helped.
