These:

I cannot find them ripped anywhere, and I have no idea how to rip even a simple sprite, nor whether knowing that would enable me to rip those backgrounds anyway... anyone able to help or point me in the right direction? O:

Haha, wow, those are awesome. I can't believe I never went as far as to beat Alder in BW... I've never seen those before!

Ripping those... hmm. They probably have their own narc. There's only so many narcs though.

hahaha yes, these sprite is a particle animation.

APS or SPA format, is a sprite too but spa have own pallete on end spa file. you can view it on crystaltile or tinke :o

spa used on move sprite effect (not background effect).

so I just ....wait what? x_x

still can't open them? okay i give you a small tutorial to ripping spa sprite using tinke (because is a better and easy one for beginner user).

  1. open aps / spa file on hex editor (can using tinke hex editor or using another hex editor) scoll into end of file.

  2. Find color offset. see image ^ on highlight blue 10110.
  3. go to tinke apps, open you rom, go to spa files, click on spa file.
  4. go to open as button.
  5. select as pallete.

  6. you will see like this :

  7. after that go to start byte, checked hexadecimal, and fill 10110(color start offset) to text box and click enter. and change depth into 16.

  8. after that click open as button again, now click tile.

  9. it will like this :

  10. tweaking, change offset value to 271, height 512, and checked tranparency. it will like:

  11. done, this ripper sprite :

Took a while to find tinker 0.9.0.0... 0.8.2.0 doesnt have the same options.

Also, if you check poison/bug background, you can see it is offset 272 not 271.

They're not transparent though, because the background is meant to be black anyway (most evident on Flying background)

my option is just show you how make it to open spa file into a sprite file (readable sprite), my tutorial is not apply to all spa file since spa file is have own header sometimes is more bigger than on example (tutorial) so start offset will not same each spa file, try by yourself to find a fit one.

the main problem is if spa file is have 2 particle or more than 1 particle, my tutorial is for single particle only.

example :

in my own tools was show correctly for each particle.

actually spa file is have a friends file on different narc file.....

Okay, next thing I'm looking for... BW/2 type icons.

Anyone know where those would be located?

These not being ripped and uploaded anywhere is even weirder than the awesome backgrounds lol.

EDIT: nvm, bulbapedia has them...
