In regards to the sun damage, I tested it further and came to the conclusion that sun works like this: Provides a damage boost to special fire attacks but not physical (e.g. will boost Flamethrower but not Flare Blitz) And will reduce special water damage but not physical (e.g. will reduce Hydro Pump damage but not Waterfall)

Sun does not seem to be providing a boost to the damage of fire type moves, is this intended?
