Gen VI Metagame: Mega Evolutions
Lorshinator replied to wraith89's topic in Competitive Battling Discussion
Fun Comments So far this is a nice list! I like the format too, reminiscent of Know Your Pokemon (which needs updating... but that's another thing)... Looking at this list really shows how few megas there are. Lots of wasted potential on others... Why is it my favourites are always so peculiar? Houndoom has an awesome design (wish it was normal evo, not mega... lame), but REQUIRES sun... X_X and Aerodactyl is more suited to a team player than an offensive threat, though it can be one... I wish there were more megas, ones that catered a little more to either forgotten Pokemon or Pokemon that could use an update. I'd love to see Mega Rampardos with speed boost. Actually, I'd like to see mega starters more. Emboar and Sceptile in particular. if Serperior or Sceptile became Grass/Dragon, that'd be cool, but I actually think Sceptile is more suited to become a Grass/Dark, though it can learn a few dragon moves, that's for sure. Perhaps if a Grass Dragon was made, it'd give them an excuse not to make an actual species... Some thoughts/opinions Would it be wrong to make some suggestions? You can take em as you will. if this thread became popular or whatnot each mega could have it's list of opinons from various players who share their thoughts on how they play megas. The problem with this is that some megas have a very particular use and would only work for surprise value. Or you could have a fun section talking for each mega talking about an overall opinion. I don't know. The Moment I respond to the thread's questions I'd choose anything but Blastoise (personal reasons), Scizor (bland style), Gengar (broken), Alakazam (meh), and the likes. I think I'd run some of the less obviously overpowered ones, such as Houndoom for personal reasons. I've never been too crazy about it's normal design, though it has grown on me in the competitive scene, and it suits me perfectly considering how ridiculously scrawny and twiggy I am. It just looks like a legit evolution to me, and Dobermans are cool. I'm well aware it's a hellhound. methinks Houndoom would pair decently with fighters, of course, but one must be careful and probably arrange a team that can actually support Houndoom, and vice versa... And not be too predictable about it. Though I'm stating the obvious. Solarbeam may be kind of required, but Houndoom is scared of special defenders. Reversal is an option, as is Crunch. It's attack is strangely not buffed at all, but I think the main seller of Houndoom is his increased bulk and speed, and to an extent the ability. I would've personally liked something with a different ability, perhaps Sheer Force or Infiltrator. nah that'd be ridiculous. Sludge Bomb is also very particular, and I honestly think it'd mainly be used to deal with Azumarill or... Florge/Sylveon, which would not likely OHKO him, and his fire attacks would probably leave large dents in him anyway. Actually, it'd be awesome if Houndoom's Mega had an ability that actually followed the flavour text, and could induce poison with a 30% chance, even if it's a ranged fire attack. Or his fire type attacks could be more likely to burn, or he could just keep Flash Fire. I remember Cofagrigus and Houndoom being great teammates in Gen 5, at least for me. In Doble Battles he'd love the other player to have Mega Zard Y, obviously. Mega Aggron is quite useful, though if you run a "lazy" set of full HP/ Def, he won't be hitting very hard at all. With max 31 evs he technically hits something like has fully invested 95 attack... lol I noticed that. Megas I'd like to see are Mega Emboar, who I think would be best with increased bulk over speed and special. He could probably get rock head as his ability. If it existed that would make Emobar monstrous and clearly have an advantage of normal Emboar. I'd love to see mega Rampardos, and mainly invest in it's speed and attack, and a bit into bulk. It could be given Rock Head as well. Mega Rhyperior would be a lot of fun, but to differentiate it from Aggron it could be more into attack power as opposed to defence. It could keep solid rock, or it could get adaptability, and be like a specialized tank... Because apparently bulbapedia says it's design is inspired by a tank. Mega Braviary would be cool, and turn it into a Fighting/Flying, because that makes more sense and isn't as bland. It could get fighterate, where it's normal type moves become fighting type. More investment into speed and attack power, like mega pinsir. But the mega I want most... Is mega Durant. I started to lose whatever train of thought I had. -

Uh... I have some grass Safaris, though only two... Does that count for anything? -
Two things. I'm incredibly mad that Dark is weak to Fairy, thus giving Yveltal an unfair disadvantage against Xerneas. I will admit that's not new (Groudon and Kyogre, Dialga and Palkia), and that's not all that counts. But it also makes pokemon that seemingly had no weaknesses suddenly have weaknesses. If Fairy is, in Xerneas's case, Life, why is it neutral in all aspects towards Ghost? I'm happy that Fairy is resistant (and not weak to) Fighting, and that Steel has been slightly nerfed... But bug? I guess that's because Fairy is in some cases still attributed to some creatures which are magical and bugs are, generally, not. Eh I dunno. I'm concerned that Fairy has two uncommon weaknesses and four resistances, which does include that immunity to Dragon. What saddens me more is that they could've adjusted so much more but they decided not to, at least, not that we know of (but since the chart is right there I doubt it needs official confirmation). What happened to Dark gaining more prominence? It was never OP to begin with, it was quite balanced... it's just odd to me to make it weak to something else. Everyone uses Fighting types, Dark's weaknesses were easily exploitable. And of course with that said Ice has no more resistances. Of course. Well, I'll cross my fingers for Gen 7 making Gamefreak realize they need to alter pretty much the entire type balance which includes poison being more effective on more things to give them more of a reason to use it and for Ice to have more resistances, and for Fairy to be weak to ghost. I think, though, that I'm worried, but I won't say the metagame is entirely screwed. Also MegaChomp will just go to ubers straight away, because they don't want to deal with it. At least it's not sand rush, and it's weaknesses are potentially more exploitable. I'm just mainly angry that they didn't adjust the type balance as much as they could've... That's my biggest concern. Fairy just needs ONE MORE WEAKNESS for it to be fine. For Dragons, it was only weak to two things, fair enough, but one of them was coverage for everything and most of the dragons out there were especially weak to it. They are also weak to themselves. As for Fairy, we have yet to see how powerful the pokemon themselves are, because it could be a dangerous type with not so many tremendously dangerous mons on it. We'll see how that goes. Bug isn't tremendously common offensively except for STAB only, and Dark is seldom used offensively except for STAB, though it may be used more since Steel no longer resists it. We may see a rise in poison type moves though, like a poison type flare blitz or outrage. Imagine that. As for it's resistance to Fighting, I am especially happy for this since Fighting is too effective and too common, so that's good. As for Dragon... It's good they're immune since Dragon is hard to counter, or was. Now it may be easy. But countering fairies? That may be hard. They should've had another weakness, such as fire, ghost, or grass, or something, since you balance it out for having lots of handy resistances with common weaknesses, like Steel. I don't feel great about this by any means, though I don't know if it'll destroy or seriously hinder competitive. yes, I know Wraith, random Iron Tails and Poison jobs, but they may buff their movepools at least. Still mad that Poison is not super effective on water, Ice wasn't buffed, and fairy only has two weaknesses.

I was worried about the whole Hax thing that Amie will bring up - but when you bring it up in that light, it sounds more welcoming than not. While I do not like the fact that it creates a free sturdy if you are super lucky, but it adds a new dimension to happiness, as well as unpredictability. Gen 5 was largely predictable to me, as I get burned all the time by scald and the like, and getting critted while setting up. I think it's reasonable to assume that the crit chance will be lowered but Amie will bring it back up to where it was, or make it a little higher (which is fine). The random chance for curing status ailments is also highly welcome as status effects are annoying and since they last forever they are, dare I say, too effective. I hate having my Fighters get hit by one scald and then get burned and are forever useless without a cleric. Amie should definitely spread it to all status...Except for Freeze. Possibly. I think Freeze should actually get it's own inducing move, since it's largely underpowered. I hope it's not only for paralysis as that would suck, although it is, typically, the easiest status to spread (Thunder wave?). Status shuts down Pokemon entirely in previous gens but hopefully in Gen 6 there's a chance they can make a comeback, rather than being hit by it once and then being doomed. But it could be a problem sometimes. As for the evasion, I think it should be kept to a minimum, although accuracy raising moves will have more prominence, and finally, Evasion is not JUST the same as accuracy n' such, it is it's own field. I wonder if abilities like Keen Eye will get buffed? Keen Eye would be utterly amazing if it was unaffected by accuracy modifiers that detriment your Pokemon's chance to land a hit... Meaning that if they mud slap you, it fails, and if they raise evasion (even with amie's bonuses!) they don't mean jack. I think that would be excellent... But I doubt they'll do that. Then, Keen Eye would be a cool ability. Also I wonder if abilities or sets that focus on crits will be more prominent as well, and focus energy may be viable? Who knows. *Crosses fingers for Keen Eye to be buffed* Also Sniper should make moves slightly more accurate as well. I think that if they're going to make it so moves are less likely to hit overall then they should have abilities which boost accuracy and boost critical hit power, although more so the former. I thought Amie would just raise the potential of their stats, meaning that the happier they are, the higher their stats will be... But that's not the case. At least GF is trying to change it up.

I do believe X/Y has already made far more changes to the gameplay than Black/White, as Black/White mostly just expanded on what was good about Gen 4 and made a ton of really powerful pokes, coupled with dream world abilities to bring some Pokemon overpowered abilities where they were already good, and also to bring some Pokemon out of obscurity. I think Tbird is right on the whole damage recalculation though. It would essentially be giving all Pokemon a defence boost, which in the end only slows it down. I personally don't mind this entirely, but it would be annoying to have a swords dance Garchomp not OHKO most fragile opponents with Earthquake. I don't believe by any means though that they will recalculate the stats for many mons, though. That seems like a bit too big, but who knows, Gamefreak has already trolled lots of fanboys by making them believe they couldn't possibly add another type... and they did. So it's possible, but I think it's incredibly unlikely. Because I'd rather write what I want to write, here's an analysis of Helioptile.
-
Malamar Everything everyone says is unimportant. Here's an analysis of a not too-new new Pokemon.
-
I'm a bit out of the loop. What exactly does this do, and how does it work? Well, judging from what I see, it looks like you can essentially create your own Pokemon, or at least within the boundaries it has?
-
Thought of finally adding additions... Yeah. Gogoat. MOAR POKES Swirlix Yes, I'm doing Swirlix again. Spritzee Dedenne Noivern
-
Then it is my own fault for not observing the key word "random". I generally don't do randoms at all, so... Yeah. if you want to go total random be my guest.

No offence, but I see a number of glaring problems with some of these pokes. Unless you're going for surprise factor or total troll, I have these things to suggest. Number one, Snorlax does not have good special attack, so focus blast is not a very good move on it, at least for surprise value. I think you need to consider that some pokemon have certain roles and they need to cater to them to be most effective, and you must also consider that some Pokemon need support in order to do well. So, here's a suggestion. Snorlax can be a heavy hitter and DOES hit very hard, but you may want to remove Giga Impact and instead replace it with something that can consistently hit hard, like Return which at full happiness clocks at 102 X 1.5 (STAB, Full Happiness) = 152 power. While substantially weaker than Giga Impact, which has 225 base power with stab, you can keep hitting hard. For the fighting type move, I'd recommend something like either Brick Break or something else. Heck, even something like Fire Punch isn't a bad idea. For Steelix, Steelix has surprisingly low attack power being a measly 85. You want a defensive pivot, considering Snorlax's low defence. So, this guy may have good synergy/team play with Snorlax considering they both cover each other's weaknesses, asides from the fighting weakness. A ghost type works better, but eh. Use Stealth Rock for sure, but then have Earthquake or Gyro Ball - Dragon tail/Roar also capitalizes on Stealth Rock as well. Eliminate Sandstorm entirely, it has no use on this team. It may do minor damage but you should take advantage of weather when a Pokemon can make use of it's benefits, such as boosting rock type's special defence and abilities. You don't need both Confusion and Psychic. Claydol can go offensive in some minor ways but it's generally better again as a defensive pivot. It can cover the ground and fighting type weaknesses of the previously mentioned Pokes, and likewise, Steelix counters the weakness to Bug, Dark, Ghost, etc, and the ice type powers which are often special can be defended by Snorlax who has very high special defence. You can also use Thick Fat to make it very durable against fire and ice, making it resistant to both. While toxic becomes a problem, rest is there, and Steelix can cover up Poison types. Claydol should be defensive, not offensive, but you can add some coverage moves like Ice Beam which is generally better for it, although Grass Knot exists too for Water types. But you should probably leave that to Pikachu. Considering most of your Pokemon are slow, Dusknoir could use Trick Room instead. By the way, Destiny Bond is mainly useful on faster Pokemon because a slower Pokemon can't use it before it faints. With that said, Dusknoir is mainly good at being a check to fighting types, which your team has three weaknesses to (yikes!). Also, it can learn Ice Punch, so give it that instead of Blizzard, which is far less accurate and may not do as much damage. What you went on about that may sound promising is Ferrothorn. It has surprisingly good attack for a very defensive pokemon. It can abuse Power Whip and Swords Dance, although it is probably a bit too slow to make use of SWords Dance - it can also use curse, which may be better as it raises two stats, but lowers speed, which can be very effective with Gyro Ball and Power Whip. If you're going offensive you can get rid of Spikes. However you could also give it thunder wave to paralyze the slower pokes for Pikachu to come in and take them out, and also to make Ferrothorn's life easier. For Pikachu, give it a light ball. It will become incredibly strong. For fast, sweeper types, always monopolize speed and special/physical attack (one or the other in most cases), never give it defence because Pikachu is far too frail to take any hits. If you did this because total troll, I would laugh. But if you want to use these Pokes consider these things.

CONFIRMED: Honeedge has the ability NO GUARD. What do you guys think? New Pokemon: Karamanero - Dark/Psychic (evolution) This is a very bizarre specimen bearing the Dark/Psychic type. It has the ability Suction Cups/Contrary. Suction cups would make it a useful supporter (it has Hypnosis), and not too many Pokemon have Suction Cups. Defensively, I don't see this thing being too durable, because it looks squishy. It may be focused around special attacks and defence, giving it a contrast in comparison with Octillery and Cradily. It's type may be seen as a draw back, as it loses the resistance to fighting, dark, and ghost, and becomes 4X weak to bug. However that may be just one of it's few weaknesses, if not it's only weakness. It does have an immunity to Psychic, which could come in handy for Pokemon that need a fighting type companion. Contrary could also make it good to switch in on things like intimidate as well. I don't see too much use for it yet, so although Contrary looks cool, it may not be as useful as Contrary. It does have a new move called "Turn Over" which reverses stat changes. Wonder how that would work? Maybe it could act as a baton passer of sorts with this move, or maybe there will be a move that passes on stat bonuses in one fell sweep (setting up your opponent for disaster too could be neat, like using a move like Iron Defence, but then using this, then passing it onto the enemy), but that's unlikely. If it could learn taunt, it could become an effective stall/wallbreaker, crippling walls with sabotage. It doesn't look like a sweeper of any kind, chances are it will be great on teasing and crippling the foe. It would be effective on teams that would have an issue with teams that have issue with enemies setting up traps or making them powerful. Now this is a Dark/Fighting I would use! It look really boss, and it's colours don't make it too obvious what type it is. But there's more than just good looks and dark/fighting type. It has the ability Iron Fist (AWESOME!) and can learn Hammer Arm. It definitely looks on the bulkier side, so we can expect it not to be utterly frail, coupled with some almighty attack. Chances are its attack rating will be quite high, differentiating it from Scrafty who has lower power. Hopefully, it can learn the elemental punches, along with drain punch and the like. I don't think, though, that it's dark typing will be of much use other than having a lot of nice resistances and only one weakness. I think that if it can learn bulk-up, it probably will be able to go fight in any tier, although seeing the other fates of the bears I'm not expecting it to be OU due to speed and potential lack of coverage. However, I am expecting a really high attack stat. Like, sky-rocketing high. Beartic should have had base 130 attack. IT'S A FRIGGING BEAR. Speaking of which, why isn't it a water type? Ugh. Poor Beartic. Could've been so much more. Anyway, I do think this guy should have focus punch, unless it's too aggressive and impatient. If it could, and if it's attack stat was any higher than 115 (as it should, bears are monstrously strong), this guy might just be one of the best sub-punchers around. Throw in some coverage moves to be expected, like Earthquake and Rock Slide, and it'll have great coverage. But what's that? Ghost types? Well, caught behind a substitute he won't have to worry about being burned, and come to think of it, it's likely he'll have Crunch. If it has high attack, like very high, this guy would be real dangerous. As I'm saying this, I wouldn't be surprised if it did become OU because it would have one of the more predictable (sub-punch) set, but it would likely be just too whopping powerful that it would be really good on a lot of those pesky steels. I think I'd advise this guy to be next to fairies, to get rid of the steel types that could block dragons. He could also be good on Honedge, because he resists Ghost due to his dark typing. So, from these assumptions, I see no reason he wouldn't be a force to be reckoned with. ... This thing will be a devastating tank, along the lines of Reuniclus. It can learn Drain Kiss to sap up health, and then it can learn a new move called Devour, which is an instant KO against anything that's inanimate. That last bit was a lie... But it can learn Drain Kiss, which is like Giga Drain I guess... But seriously. What.

332 Cacturne Type: Grass/Dark Ability: Sand Veil / Water Absorb Base stats: 70/115/60/115/60/55 Difficulty: Advanced Seeing Cacturne would be petrifying. They follow you close in a mob through the night and wait for you to no longer move. What do they do afterwards? It's a mystery. However I do find it odd they move in mobs, considering that it's previous dex entry where it waits night to fall does make it confusing. It made me think it moves alone... But whatever. Cacturne is definitely one of the more ghoulish dark types, if not the most ghoulish and ghost-like. It's got sand for blood! That aside, is Cacturne really that terrifying? Potentially. Grass/Dark typing is decent offensively, giving it some much-appreciated moves that regenerate health, like Giga Drain, Leech Seed and the like, as well as some really potent dark type moves such as Dark Pulse and Sucker Punch. It's attack stats are nothing short of scary, both clocking at 115 each, making this monster capable of going one or the other, or mixed. Some moves are quite handy, like Sucker Punch, which offsets it's poor speed, and it's one of the more potent users of the move. It also has access to Giga Drain, a rather helpful and not necessarily weak move. If using Sub-Sets, this move is recommended. He also has access to Seed-Bomb, a more reliable physical attack STAB. But that's not all - it's got quite good coverage, as well as an assortment of power boosting attacks in the shape of Swords Dance, Growth, and Nasty Plot. So, all of these options allow it to go one or the other, making it a tad unpredictable. It has coverage moves in the likes of Drain Punch, Focus Blast, Super-power, thunderpunch (kinda useless, but nifty nonetheless), Payback, and Hidden Power. While it's coverage is not universal, it's most certainly impressive, and deadly. It also has access to spikes, which in Gen 3 was one of the main reasons it was used in lower tiers. So what gives? This guy is down in NU/RU tiers. Well, first and foremost, it's typing is terrible defensively. 4x Weak to bug, weak to fighting, weak to ice, fire, flying, the works. It's resistances are not bad, but another issue is it's terrible defences. Gen 3 had a thing for slow moving, rather frail Pokemon (looks at Banette). Cacturne relies on it's formidable ability, Sand Veil, to really shine. If you pop it in a Sand Team and give it brightpowder (which mind you is a comibation that is banned, both the ability and the item), it'll avoid a lot of attacks, and I had a horrific experience with double team... Not pretty. As a result Cacturne needs a lot of support to pull off well - if it goes out in the open it's dead-meat. Luckily, Smogon is kinda stupid, and really hates Sand Veil, so they banned it. Now, Cacturne is forbidden on Sand Teams, which could serve as a testament to how dangerous it is (although methinks it largely is thanks to Garchomp). But Game Freak was friendly, and decided to give it Water Absorb. This is a rather good ability, no doubt. Having an immunity to water, and being able to heal itself. The concern does arise though that many water types carry ice type moves, so it cannot stay in for very long. In fact, that's sort of how Cacturne plays - it needs to be under the cover of something to shine, be it an asleep enemy, paralyzed enemy, or substitute, or bolstered defences. Team support is essential for Cacturne. Ninjask, though atrociously predictable, can support it by boosting it's speed and attack, and pass on a substitute. Venemoth may work better, as a quiver dance pass can make it bulkier, slightly faster and just more dangerous. If you use Cacturne as something thrown onto a team with no real purpose, you'd probably be wasting a precious team slot. Better choices in standard-play are Sceptile, Lilligant, Whimsicott... Even Venusaur. But, if you want to use it in a sandstorm team, or a team that needs spikes in weather, Cacturne will happily oblige. Just know that Cacturne is very luck-based. Sand Veil can easily be useless, and Water Absorb could set you up. To use properly, team support is needed, and proper care is necessary. To counter it, Heracross would probably scare it away. Any bulky fighting type would destroy it, and any Bird with Aerial Ace (if you were bored) would destroy it. Yanmega could also take it down very easily. Bug types in general will utterly destroy Cacturne. Fire types such as Arcanine can Intimidate Cacturne, and easily take it out. Having weather to counter Sand is also recommended, if you encounter it online. Any super-effective attack will easily destroy it, but be careful of substitute + sandstorm + double team combos, those are dreadful. (And banned in competitive play). Notable moves: Seed Bomb, Giga Drain, Drain Punch, Low Sweep, Focus Blast, Dark Pulse, Payback, Spikes, Swords Dance, Growth, Nasty Plot, Leech Seed, Substitute ,Focus Punch, Encore, Hidden Power (for coverage) Useful Items: Leftovers, Brightpowder, Focus Sash, Lum Berry

Very interesting!! I wonder what it's story will be - or Pokedex, eh. I don't know if it look like it'll be that potent though - it probably will have attack, but that's all I can gather. Maybe it'll learn a steel type move like Night Slash, etc, and have an ability that'll boost the power of "slashy slash" moves? That would actually be cool. Or it'll have cursed body - or it'll have an ability that will boost attack. I just think of this thing as a glass cannon - I highly doubt it'll be defensive. It may learn a lot of ghostly moves, but I doubt it'll be supportive. But we'll see. I find it very interesting, but I hope it doesn't suffer the same fate as Banette and other unfortunate ghosts.

Lorshy is here with his stellar analytics. They are totally flawless and such. Chespin is a hedgehog with some armour thing going on, so it's defensive is likely to be quite high. Hedgehogs aren't renowned for their speed, so I'm not assuming this will be a fast critter either. I at one point thought he may be grass/rock, which wouldn't be allthat great, and we've already got cradiy. Something tells me that Chespin may have more attack than Torterra. I picture large sharp claws and spikes... Maybe it'll learn swords dance? While it could be defensive, I'm assuming it will disobey tradition (to Wraith's disdain) and be a slower attacker, which I cannot say is all that great anyway. If it is slow and grass/dark, a myriad of weaknesses will do nothing, and that type has already been tried and it is rather ineffective. However, another sourc eclaims it is actually grass/fighting, which if true would greater diminish counter-ability within the starters. If it were Grass/Fighting, that would probably be more effective, and in my opinion make more sense. Considering it knws roll-out, it may learn some other rock type moves which will be decent for coverages sake. Maybe rollout will get a buff this gen, like how bullet seed and the like did? Maybe a pokemon will have such an ability? Anyway... This is competitive, I'm not focused... Bottom line, all of the options sadly point Chespin being UU or less with Overgrow. Grass has never been the top of the chain and I don't think any stat distribution would do it major justice. I'm thinking it may be a little bit like Sandslash where it has alright HP, good attack and good defence, but meh other stats. Perhaps it could learn sucker punch, which would make it an intriguing pokemon provided it sets up with leech seed and other moves. It's special attack may not be anything special, but who knows. Grass/Fighting makes more sense with the hedgehog get-up (or its it an armadillo? doubt it). Either way, not top of the chain, unless it becomes a great supporter with a myriad of dark sabotage and grass leeching. Maybe it'll get a unique move? I'll think of more later when I am not tired.
