PS3 helps locate Oil around the world :

Repsol, one of the world's ten largest oil companies, is employing the use the of the Cell processor, more specifically the PowerXCell 8i variant on a BladeCenter QS22 computer, to "analyze undersea rock formations in the search for untapped reserves."

It helps fight crime and is used in healthcare :

the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Cyber Crimes Center said that it had begun using networked PS3s to crack encrypted caches of child pornography . The console has also been used as part of the Folding@home disease research project.

It is part of the US Air Force network of high performance computing systems :

It helps analyse the human brain :

The supercomputer will attempt to simulate the way the human brain processes information and how it pulls off the remarkably difficult task of recognizing the content of images.

It even helps the environment!

The cluster won't be as powerful as a regular supercomputing rig, but it will be cheaper and more environmentally friendly: it'll consume as much as 95% less electrical power and shut down unused machines when the cluster isn't running at full capacity.

The PS3 is nothing if not multifunctional.

I am going off my PS3 to an extent. With the last update the Browser (I rarely go online with a PC) loses Cookies way too quickly. Voice chat is restricted to the game you are playing (or no game I presume). The PS3 has other good facilities for you to "play" with. Also download content is sometimes cheaper on PS3. The machine is not region specific (yet?).

360? Much more flexible voice chat. Downside... it costs money to use the online "excellence". I prefer the 360 controller triggers for racing games.

As you may have gathered I am not really biased one way or the other (this may start an argument!!).

There are console specific games that are very good for both systems. Multi-platform games do not show much (if any) difference between the two consoles.
