(I hope this is in the right place if not please tell me) cant load Pokémon red Vc .dat save into pkhex

hi I'm new to useing pkhex and I cant seem to get my .dat save for Pokémon red to go into pkhex can someone please help. I fallowed  all the steps on the guides I have seen but every time I try to load the .dat file I get the windows error ding and then nothing and everything I read said nothing about what to do. please help.

Receive your starter, receive the Pokedex, interact with the PC, then save the game a few times in game, before exporting it and trying it again.

thanks this fixed it. now just one question can I edit items to or just Pokémon.
