Need Clairification

I was trying to edit my save in Pokemon Ultra Sun and was having an issue loading my save in PKhex. 

Just want to make sure what I have come to understand here:

1. Backup my save using a program like Checkpoint.

2. Edit the backup using PKHex.

3. Restore modified backup.

I just making sure I understand this correctly because, I thought I would be able to edit my save directly from the default save location on my SD card, but kept running into corruption errors from PKhex.

The steps you're using are correct but I'm unsure what you mean by "default save location". In which folder on your SD card is the save that you're editing?

Sorry took so long to reply.  I was opening up the ID1 folder and going into the main content folder where the 2DSXL stores all your games and saves.  I was trying to open the *.sav file directly and not a backup Main file.  I hope that made sense.

That .sav file is encrypted you need to use a save manager like checkpoint to decrypt it.
