They are using bits to store the medal dates.

The date is C30C which is 1100001100001100 in binary.

the first 5 digits is the day 11000 = 24 the next 4 digits is the month 0110 = 6 and the last 7 digits is the year 0001100 = 12.

So the date is June 24th 2012.
