About This File

This is a rom hack of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky that adds in all starter Pokémon from across gens 5-9!

  • On top of just adding the standard starters, Zorua, Axew and Rockruff have also been made starters, Eevee can evolve into Sylveon, and all partner pokémon across all rescue team and explorers games are available. New portraits and animations have been added to existing starters. Alolan Raichu, Alolan Marowak and Hisuian Typhlosion have also been added as branch evolutions for their respective base starters (as of v1.3.0).
  • Implements the fairy type, updating all fairy pokemon and moves to have the correct typing. Milk Drink has been replaced with Disarming Voice, and the placeholder move data for Judgement has been replaced by Moonblast.
  • Due to limitations to the amount of partners in the game, the mod has been split into two separate patches, MIDDAY version and MIDNIGHT version. Both have the same hero options, but MIDDAY includes all fire, grass and water starters for gens 1-7 as partners, whereas MIDNIGHT version includes all other new partners added by this mod, as well as all other partners from rescue team and explorers (pikachu, eevee, machop, riolu, etc). Check the document included in the zip file for specifics and use whichever patch aligns your dream team best.
  • Applies several quality of life patches that come bundled with skytemple - such as confirming your hero choice after the quiz, exp share, move shortcuts, mass-appraisal of boxes and fairy gummies. A full list with credits can be found in the document included in the zip file.
  • A copy of XDeltaUI has been included in the zip file for ease of patching. Instructions for patching the game can be found in the document included in the zip file.
  • XDeltaUI might not work if you're on a mac - if not, I've been told this tool works instead: https://www.romhacking.net/utilities/746/
  • UniPatcher works well for Android devices.
  • This is purely a starter modification hack - there are no story changes.

Learnsets, IQ Groups and evolution info can be found in this spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Spq9U_TCTqxT-NTovtm_c9Mzv1kTuTujd-BpPp0jj4U/edit?usp=sharing

Updates!

NEW 23/05/24: A lot of you reported issues with Grovyle's sprite not behaving as intended. This has now been fixed. A bug causing the game to occasionally freeze when advancing floors should also now be resolved.

NEW 10/03/24: Axew and Grookey added as starters, replacing Shinx and Riolu respectively. Shinx and Riolu are still available as partners in MIDNIGHT, to use them as heroes use version 1.2.1 or below. Additional portraits/sprites have been added for evolutions of all playable heros/partners where applicable, and sleep animation has been copied over to EventSleep where missing. Greninja's moveset has been updated and Sobble's full evolution line is now implemented. Alolan Raichu, Alolan Marowak and Hisuian Typhlosion are now available for evolution (see ingame evolution help via new cyndaquil NPC on the crossroads, alongside sprite/portrait/patch credits, or check learnset spreadsheet linked above.

15/06/23: The evolution flag for Litten and Froakie was erroneously still set to false in the previous update, but this is fixed as of 1.2.1, so be sure to update if you have either of those two. Despite doubts expressed in the changelog I can now confirm the update DOES work for existing save files!

08/06/23: Litten now evolves into Incineroar - and Froakie evolves into Greninja (mid-stages aren't available yet). Now includes a version compatible with Melon, RetroArch and DraStic emulators. Fairy gummis can now be bought or received as mission rewards, and existing pokémon that learn moonblast and disarming voice in sun and moon now learn it here. (Accidentally said Dazzling Gleam in the txt and changelog, but this is what I meant!). Several other bugfixes and improvements included - check the changelog for details!

17/05/23 Sobble is now available as a starter! 🎉 This means Skitty had to be removed as a hero unfortunately (but is still a partner) - if you'd like Skitty as a hero, be sure to download version 1.0.0 of this mod instead of the latest version. Sobble is also now available as a partner in MIDNIGHT version. For full list of heroes and partners, check the last two preview images for this hack. Updated the rescue team partners (Cubone, Psyduck, Machop) to use additional sprites and portraits created for the PMD Sprite Repository. Splashscreen credits for the artists have been swapped over to the title screen for readability and visibility.

Disclaimers:

  • All portraits and sprites are the work of artists contributing to the pmd sprite repository (Spreadsheet of individual credits with links when provided is here). Because work on the repository is ongoing, evolutions for Chespin, Fuecoco, Spritgatito and Quaxly are unimplented as of now, as are Torracat and Frogadier. Certain portraits may not show up in-game for the same reason.
  • A set of exclusive items have been added and set across all new pokémon (Enigma bow, brooch and scarf,  and ultima prism) - but I've not yet figured out how to modify the functionality of these yet so they're likely pretty useless as of now.
  • Due to the size of the expanded starter list, all starters are sadly gender-locked. Check the document to verify what gender to select in the quiz in order to get your preferred hero.
  • I've not ran into any issues so far with this, but feel free to message me here if you notice anything. I'm also contactable on tumblr (pyromaniac-cynadquil) and bluesky(@pyrocyndaquil.bsky.social).
  • I'm currently looking into a potential version 2.0.0 featuring a third version with extra new starters as well as an overhaul to stats and patches used, but this is up in the air right now.

Sprite and portrait credits (Detailed fully here): Chunsoft, gromchurch, Emmuffin, puropoly, 0palite, thechargingrhino, Emboarger, Miju, Garbage, baronessfaron, Meganai, PhillipsYoung, felis_licht, Audino, JFain, ShyStarryRain, kitkarma, dmDash, Vynnyal, starwolff, NeonCityRain, lemongrass, NOLASMOR, C_Pariah, Caitemis, Deeshura, Noo, Luna-Alex, Murpi, Ginnie, XModxGodX, lovefulpup, Smalusion, MilesFarber, NeroIntruder, Blanca, Noivern, NikolaP, 3P1C, mucrush, ◥θ┴θ◤, TopKec, XxWindpawxX, FrivolousAqua, Pink_no_tori, Jhony-Rex, Reimu\_needs\_$$$, CamusZekeSirius, avalancheman, Fable, psittacidae13, Bwappi, TawnySoup

I love this! This is an absolutely wonderful mod! I do have a question, though: Can I update my save to the other version?

Response from the author:

Hi, I'm really glad you like it, thank you! 😊 Yes, all older versions should be fully compatible with the update, as long as you keep the same file name as your old .nds file any existing saves should work perfectly fine 👍

Did a recent playthrough and loved getting to rexplore the game with some fresh new faces. Really like the fact that the game is basically vanilla+ as I'm not a fan of big drastic changes. However I would personally like to see more starters added to the mod, top of my list being Hisuian Zorua and Sneasel, and maybe Buneary. I've seen other reviews/comments about more to come in the future and eagerly await an update.

Response from the author:

Thank you very much, really glad you enjoyed it! 💜

Hisuian Zorua is definitely towards the top of the list for Pokémon I'm considering for a third version, glad to see it getting more interest expressed because it's definitely assuring me it's a good idea. Hisuian Sneasel could be fun too and I'll definitely be adding it to the list, though it's unlikely I'll be adding any pokemon from gens earlier than gen 5 (regional forms being an exception ofc), since they're technically in the game already.

If you WOULD like to play expanded sky with pokemon like buneary though, I have a tutorial here that'll let you quickly swap out heroes/partners for personal use in a few small clicks :)

Do you think about adding other starters like yamper, togedemaru and others?

Response from the author:

Hello! All the starter slots the game can take are filled for MIDDAY and MIDNIGHT, but as said at the bottom of the description I'm considering adding a potential extra version (DUSK version) into the mix sometime later this year to squeeze in a bunch more. Yamper was already on my list of potential candidates so it's great to know there's an interest, and I'll jot Togedamaru down too! I'll probably do a survey later this year to collect people's most desired bonus starter ideas across gens 5-9 so keep an eye out for that too 👀

Other starters I already have noted down as potentials are Espurr, Mimikyu, Charcadet and Pawmi.

How do I use this on a phone ds emulator?

Response from the author:

Hello! I'm not sure about iOS, but I've been informed that unipatcher (downloadable on google play) works well on android to apply the patch to the rom. The instructions for patching in the 'read-me-first.txt' should still loosely apply there. If you're on an ios device I'm not sure which one has best results there, but the app store should hopefully have something similar! Alternatively you could apply the patch on your pc and bring the file over to your phone if that's an easier method for you 👍

How do I get this to work? If you can help in any way, please do! I am not sure how to get this to work.

Response from the author:

Hello! The zip file in the download should contain a file called 'read-me-first.txt', full instructions for patching your game and setting this up are included there :) if you're still having trouble getting it to work, feel free to send me a dm and I'll see what i can do to help!

This seems like a very cool mod, but unfortunately I can't seem to get it to patch correctly. I'm on Android, and am using Unipatcher as recommended. I know I have the files set in the right spots and am on the right tab but it keeps saying the rom is not compatible with the patch. Could I have some help figuring this out? Maybe it's just being mean to me for no reason :(

Response from the author:

Hello! Have you double-checked that you're using a US version of explorers of sky? The hash won't match up with european copies, causing it to fail. I've also seen (not in unipatcher personally but it'll still apply) that if it's not a fully clean copy of eos, that can also cause problems, such as if it has any additional quality of life patches or other mods patched onto it. If it's still not working, I'd recommend getting another fresh copy and trying again.

Loved This Hack I Saw Some Previous Comments And Know Your Making A Third Version Only Request Is To Add Beldum And Give It A Better Moveset ( Because In Every Single Game He Only Learns Tackle By Level Up) Otherwise Love This Hack Thanks You So Much Since This Hack Is What Got Me Interested In Pmd

I wanted to ask you, can you evolve before the post game? Like, during the main story? thanks

Response from the author:

Hi there! The point you evolve hasn't been modified and is post-game, same as vanilla eos.

Hey Im having trouble saving in both the MIDDAY hack and MIDNIGHT hack is there a way that I can fix this (If I go to the main menu to do the special episodes I have to start all over again) 😰😰 But otherwise this Hack is incredible! I FINALLY CAN PLAY AS AXEW :D

Response from the author:

Hello! I'd recommend checking which folder in the zip file you grabbed them from - melon or nogba. The no$gba emulator has a glitch that usually prevents saving in eos and so for the versions inside this folder, there's a patch that fixes this added on top. It's known to CAUSE saving errors in melonds and a few other emulators, though, so there's another version of the mod in the melon folder that doesn't add this fix on top. Make sure you're grabbing it from the correct folder for your emulator (if you're not sure or playing on physical hardware I'd recommend just using the one in the melon folder 😊) let me know if this helps, and I'm glad you're having fun!

That's a good thing! Play with different Pokémon! But one question: did Pikachu evolve with a thunderstone into alolan Raichu?

Response from the author:

Hi! I've made it a branch evolution - Pikachu still evolves into regular Raichu with a thunderstone. For Alolan Raichu you need to evolve Pikachu with a gold gummi!

Response from the author:

¡muchas gracias! 💜💜

Hello! This is an absolutely wonderful mod! I do have a question, though: how do I recruit the new starters as future teammates (ie gen5-9 starters)? Are they in dungeons?

Response from the author:

Hi - thank you, glad you like it 😊

Hmm, that's not something I'd thought about now you mention it! I might look into updating this to add them to some post-game dungeons, or possibly make them recruitable via mission rewards... I think it may currently be possible to hatch them from eggs you get as mission rewards since I enabled the flag for it with all of them, but I've not tested that out!

EDIT: As of 1.1.0. all base forms of new 'mon will appear in Oran Forest and should be recruitable in the post-game :)

Hello! I've been doing a playthrough using this mod and it has been amazing! Been using a Chespin and Popplio duo, definitely not the first duo that comes to people's minds. The quality of life additions such as the L+(button) to use moves faster while keeping it as vanilla as possible balances it out well!

My sister helped me get the file to my phone so I could play it on the Super3DS Emulator wherever I go, though the in-game save keeps failing (thankfully the emulator itself can keep save states) so I'm not sure if that was because it was because of that, nor am unsure if future updates will work on said save due to the Emulator saving the previous version. But other than that, thank you for making this mod and can't wait to see what else you have in store!

EDIT: Yeah, it was the wrong file in the wrong emulator, but I still enjoyed the experience to the end! I am curious though, if you do make a Dusk and Dawn Version, you could add all Pokèmon made as partner only back into starters and even add a couple new ones!

Gligar, Sentret, Sneasel, Poochyena, Buizel, Stufful, Pawmi, Fidough, Nickit, Yamper, etc are a couple of picks for me!

Hello,

First off, I loved this game. It brought back so many great memories and the added pokemon are just a chefs kiss. Thank you so much for making this and taking the time to make updates continuously. I played as Litten and Grookey and it created a whole new experience for me that I thoroughly enjoyed. I finally beat the main story and was wondering if/when I will be able to evolve litten to torracat and grookey to thwackey and rillaboom in the foreseeable future. Is there a way I could do this myself manually or contribute to the process?

Response from the author:

Hello, really glad you're enjoying the hack! 😊

The sprites used in this mod are courtesy of the PMD Sprite Repository, so I implement Pokémon based on what exists in there and what assets are available for me to use. At the time of the last update that added sprites from the repo, the rest of the grookey line and Torracat had no sprites available for modders to use and I'm no spriter myself, so it's just been a case of waiting. If you do any spritework yourself and are interested I'd recommend checking out the skytemple discord server, the portraits and sprites submitted and approved over there end up used in a huge range of pmd rom hacks, it's really cool!

That being said I just had a look though, and it seems like torracat has had sprites added since the last time I checked, so I'll try to get something in for that soon!

Snowfox24

Love this mod, but I've noticed one glaring bug. I've been playing through while streaming the game to a friend(Who's never played or watched a playthrough of the game) and when it got to the scene where you first see Grovyle running through the forest, Grovyle was apparently only capable of facing the screen. It was downright comical to watch him run sideways and back up to the timegear, but I am a little worried that this might mess with the playthrough or later cutscenes, which I would like to have maximum impact on my friend. Which won't be so possible if we're both too busy cackling at the rediculousness of the grovyle cutscenes. If there's anything I could do to maybe fix this, or if a patch could be released that'd be great.

Response from the author:

Hi, this should now be fixed! I reccommend downloading the latest version (1.3.1 at the time of writing this), this should hopefully sort things out 🤞🤞🤞🤞

VanitasTheBest

I don't know how to report bugs or similar things, so I'll do it here and hope it reaches the right person. I've beaten the main story without any problems, but now in the postgame I get a lot of freezes. For example I got a request to explore Shimmer Hill I think it's called. And it freezes when I reach a certain floor. It also froze when I tried to change my team with at that Chimeco Bell outside, when I went into the Summary Page for a pokemon. I was trying to look of I can evolve my Eevee.

Response from the author:

Hi, thanks for telling me! Don't think the website will allow further replies than this in reviews, but I think you should be able to send me a dm/message. There's also a comments tab on this page as well iirc which allows longer chains. Is it always the same floor or does it vary, and is it happening before, during or after the black screen with the floor number? Depending on the answer there I MIGHT know a solution, but I'm not sure what could be causing the Chimecho issue. Could also be good to know which emulator or physical hardware you're running it on in case it's something relating to that.

If you're on version 1.3.0 (the latest version as of March) and not playing as one of the pokemon the patch notes says were added in this version, it could also be worth going to the drop-down next to the version number on this page and (after backing up your current version somewhere) checking if trying to play with the previous version still yields the same results. I'd definitely be interested in knowing! There's been more bugs reported than usual after the latest update for some reason, so it could definitely help me figure out how to diagnose it.
