Having trouble editing Pokemon yellow save from Retroarch

So I installed retroarch on my iPad to play Pokemon yellow and I wanted to give myself some money, ultra balls, potions ect just to help speed up the game a bit. 
My save file is a srm file and I’ve tried opening it in pikasav and pkhex after changing the extension to .sav as I saw a few people have done when I googled. It tells me the save is corrupt or not supported. I am also using  Pokemon yellow hack ( Pokemon yellow 151) not sure of this is part of the issue? I also turned off retroarch compressing the save file as I saw that helped but still no luck 

any guidance for me?

PKHeX does not support save states. Just changing the file extension does not convert it into a save file. 

Dump the save file from your cartridge/console after properly saving in game.

Ya I assumed that but saw a Reddit post where someone said turn off retroarch compressing and you can… tried and failed . 
 

I have properly saved through the menu but retroarch saves the file differently. I’m not using my game cartridges as I wanted to finish the Pokédex and obviously not possible on yellow without red and blue so I got the hacked version so I can organically catch them all without cheats. I just wanted to get ultra balls and money, and strongest potions to help speed the process up.
