Pokémon Blue Save Recovery

Recommended Posts

I apologize in advance if this is not the appropriate place to seek help with this. If I need to move this somewhere else please let me know and I will post accordingly.

So, I've been meaning to dump the save file from my childhood copy of Pokémon Blue for awhile now. It was the first game I ever played and being able to keep a digital backup of that save would mean a lot to me. More importantly, I wanted to try and find a way to migrate my Blastoise into the newer games. I've known for a hot minute that attempting to backup saves from original batteries is like trying to work with a ticking time bomb, but even as recent as few months ago the save was still present on my cartridge. I finally ordered the BennVenn Joey Jr. last week in the hopes that I could backup this save. However, I went to check the game yesterday in preparation of getting the dumper today and, sure enough, it appeared as if my save was gone. I'm sure you can imagine my disappointment in that moment.

When the dumper arrived in the mail today I decided to plug in my Blue cartridge just to doublecheck and to my surprise a .sav file was present. Now, this file doesn't seem to load when I put it in an emulator and PKHeX isn't giving me any luck either. I've tried looking at it in a hex editor, but I'll be completely honest when I say I don't know what I'm looking at. It doesn't seem like it's a completely garbage file, but again I don't know what I'm looking at so I'm not the best judge of that.

All of this is to ask if anyone could take a look at this file and help me figure out what I'm looking at. If there is anything salvageable from this that would be great. I really just want my Blastoise more than anything, but I'm prepared to come to terms with the save being gone forever.

Open it in a hex editor; doesn't look like the data that is normally in a valid save file. Tons of repeating junk values means it's a bad dump. Since it ran out of battery power, the data is no longer retained.

Ah so it is like that because of the battery dying. That's a shame 🫤  Well, thank you for your time and for looking into this I really appreciate it.
