Anonymous: ok FAQs 1) Is that Team Fimbulvetr? Yeah, the same old one I used to use. But they still need some work... 2) So what exactly is ladder playing? Well, in Shoddy you go to the "Find" tab and load up your team, and click Find Match. Then in a few seconds, all of a sudden you get challenged by someone. I don't know, at least that's what happened to me. I was testing stuff out and I got into a battle I didn't even want to be in. But still, I haven't seen Stallrein in action for ages. But for some reason, my ranking dropped after beating Anonymous... >.> But still, it was fun. I care nothing for numbers, so thank you Anonymous 3) What language is that weird thing in some of your comments? Korean 4) Now how does that Walrein work? She's a monster!! The only two Pokemon that can do this type of stalling in this metagame are Walrein and Breloom. Actually, Glalie and Ludicolo can do the same thing, but to a lesser extent. I'm sure there are others Walrein@Leftovers Bold Nature Ice Body 220 HP/X Def/At least 60 Speed to outspeed Skarmory in phazing, but you can put more if you feel the need to - Substitute - Protect - Roar - Surf/Blizzard/Toxic So here's how it works. First of all, Hail is ABSOLUTELY necessary to make this work. Without hail, Stallrein will NOT work. 220 HP EVs hit 416 HP, which is divisible by 16. You make a substitute, it cuts your HP off by 25%, which ends up being 104, which is quite sturdy, and enough to take hits from even Seismic Toss. After Leftovers, you regain 26 HP, and with Ice Body, you gain an extra 26 HP, which ends up 52 HP altogether after you used Substitute. Then you Protect. Protect will give you an extra 26 HP from Leftovers and an extra 26 HP from hail. Then, you have regained 104 HP altogether, which means you are at the same health you were at before! So then you can Substitute again, and Protect, and continue the chain, and you have effectively 32 turns of stalling. However, to make this work, you'll want to set up Toxic Spikes first, get rid of Leftovers from stuff, and eat spin away entry hazards (which is why TENTACRUEL is recommended for a team like this). Also, get something to deter Hippowdon and Tyranitar (Abomasnow can deal with the Hippo and sometimes T-tar, but I brought in Swampert to take the T.rex down). Remember to Protect Abomasnow at all costs! (I didn't do a good job on that btw, but I hope this one can encourage you to try to create a hail team of your own). What to NOT switch Walrein into: STAB Close Combat from a Heracross hurts. 'nuff said. And other Fighting types similar to that I guess. What Walrein should not outstall: Articuno and other related bulky ice or waters are tough to stall out, particularly Articuno because it is actually faster. This ice bird has stalling powers like you've never seen before. TLDR: Just use 220 HP/240 Def/48 Speed Bold nature Ice Body Leftovers Walrein with PERMAHAIL and continue to Substitute/Protect for 32 turns. 5) So how do you make a hail team? I'll write a guide soon, maybe. I'm not an expert at this... but I can tell you one thing: do NOT fill your team with all Ice teams. Just because it's a hail team doesn't mean you need Ice immunity to work it. Abomasnow is a definite yes to a hail team... so you'll want 3-4 Pokemon that works well in hail and 2-3 Pokemon to destroy the counters for hail. That's all I'll say, and btw my team falls to Alakazam (that monster is too strong!) >.> 6) You idiot! Why do you run Blizzard on your Walrein? I don't know, and frankly I don't care. Between Surf and Blizzard, I alternate, so it doesn't matter to me anyways. Thanks to: Anonymous: For sparking my interest in Team Fimbulvetr again so that I can fix it up to fit into the Platinum metagame even more Walrein: For working her magic again Blissey: For being such a tough opponent Abomasnow: For setting up hail Mamoswine: For actually taking down 2 Pokemon and severely injuring another Snow Cloak: For actually working for once Tentacruel: For setting up Toxic Spikes and getting rid of Blissey's leftovers Froslass: For trying (I'm thinking of using Sash instead, hmmm...) Swampert: For trying... (Energy Ball Gengars, hmmm... maybe I do need Rindo Berry) You: For reading. I think this "stall battle" went fairly quickly. Too much stuff OHKOing things here and there...
wraith89 Posted July 8, 2009 Author Posted July 8, 2009 Ugh! It's that same stall tactic you used on me! It stalled out five Pokemon before... Bottom line: Stallrein is evil >
wraith89 Posted July 8, 2009 Author Posted July 8, 2009 (edited) It's not cheap You swept 4 of my 6 Pokemon because of 1) Critical hits (Lady Fortuna hates me so much, ask everyone here) 2) Focus Blast HIT me 3) I was sloppy in early-game 4) You happened to have the right Hidden power on your Pokemon (I have no idea how) 5) You won anyways when I decided to just "okay I'll stop subbing and protecting since it's annoying her so terribly :D" So that was the only way I'd do anything significant near the end anyhow Ok, never mind what I said in the beginning. So it was cheap >.< But does that mean I should stop Walrein from running one of its most potential sets? Keep in mind Walrein's fully evolved, and like poor Pidgeot, it doesn't have much chance to shine with its unimpressive "I-am-so-outclassed-by-Lapras" stats. But we can fix that by abusing its Ice Body ability. I didn't invent this set of course... but Stallrein = win I will SO make non-impressive Pokemon shine > List of non-impressive Pokemon: - Pidgeot - Raticate - Farfetch'd - Dewgong - Cloyster - Muk - Articuno <--- did a couple of times - Furret <-- Para and I did a couple of times - Corsola - Politoed <3 - Delcatty - Magcargo <--- somehow done - Delibird <--- accomplished by Shogun Ryu - Mantine - Mightyena - Whiscash - Tropius - Kecleon - Walrein <--- done many times - Bibarel <--- done a few times - Chatot - Shaymin (Land forme) - and a few more... Many of them here can be managed, some can't, but I'll still try Edited July 8, 2009 by wraith89
ParaDoX65 Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Wow....Stallwrein is just.....UGH! I hate it when he gets set up >.< Anyway, Great battle! Since you and Ray both have a hail team, maybe I shoud make one
RJFLA Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Ah, another stallrein victory. Will she ever lose??? Probably not.
Milo Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 Ah, another stallrein victory. Will she ever lose??? Probably not. Stallrein can and does lose... it just takes a bit of wise decision-making when setting your teams up. your best bets are to either 1) Phaze stallrein, forcing it to leave the battlefield after hurting itself by making a substitute (options here include roar/whirlwind/yawn/encore) 2) hit it hard and fast (before it can set up a sub). Bullet Punch, Mach Punch, and Vacuum wave (or, if you're THAT scared of subprotect sets, feint) all accomplish this feat nicely (you eventually get a strong hit in while stallrein is trying to set its own sub up again, or 3) change the weather. I cannot emphasize the change that weather can have on the battle. Change hail to sand, and next thing you know, stallrein loses its ice body healing AND is taking damage from the sandstorm, negating even its lefties healing. Abomasnow is the key to hail teams, and keeping the weather from being a factor will help you win often. While it may not be a common occurrence, preparing for unorthodox teams can save your team from an untimely demise. If I've just exploited Stallrein's weaknesses and ruined its use for you, wraith, then I'm sorry. I'm just trying to inform the others here of some things that maybe aren't thought of when they throw a team together.

I'm just trying to inform the others here of some things that maybe aren't thought of when they throw a team together. There are so many ways Stallrein can be defeated X_X Doesn't really matter Milo, we all know what beats it But if you save the surprise until late game, the opponent can be thrown off. And as you said, Abomasnow is key... making sure Aboma doesn't faint is a must... you build a team with Aboma and Walrein (and maybe another Ice) and three others that counter their counters, such as a Tyranitar counter (Aboma can easily take down Hippo one on one) and all. Stallrein isn't invincible... but I wouldn't use Feint. That's a very overspecialized move and isn't practical at all BulkyGyara's got nothing against Stallrein. Sure it can Taunt, but Blizzard can 3HKO it.
Milo Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 but I wouldn't use Feint. That's a very overspecialized move and isn't practical at all I wasn't necessarily saying it should be used, just that it DOES end up breaking the protect. I probably shouldn't have mentioned it, but I didn't want to leave anything out either.
Milo Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 Fun fact: Articuno can outstall Stallrein I would guess that vappy can as well, with water absorb for surf-using variants and a resist to ice for blizzard variants. Wish healing keeps you from having to worry about the damage racking up, and you can just wait until stallrein can't attack anymore. Suicune does the same job almost as well (at least, resting variants of suicune). Calm mind boosts resistance to either attack rather well, rest will allow you to stall out more PP while keeping healthy, and pressure will ensure that stallrein is forced to wear out its subs/protects after only a few turns (surf gets to 12 uses, and blizzard will get 4).
wraith89 Posted July 14, 2009 Author Posted July 14, 2009 (edited) I outstalled Suicune a couple of times though, but that's because of Toxic Spikes Articuno has spikes immunity to work with, so yeah... Crocune MIGHT though... BTW Sub and Protect are NOT affected by Pressure. Pressure only affects moves that affects the foe. Edited July 15, 2009 by wraith89
