Need help with DAT.file editing

I have an r4, so I downloaded AR and started using it. I don't know, however, how to add in new codes.

I tried dragging the DAT.file in the AR code manager, but it says "You must connect an NDS to upload a firmware image."

I don't know what this means.

Do I have to make another one? If so, how, because I downloaded this usrcheat.dat file in a site, so I don't really know how..

The ARDS Code Manager does not support USRCHEAT.DAT, only XML files. Search for R4CCe by Yasu, that should do the trick.
