About This File

This is a ROM Hack of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky that adds an entirely new starter roster, new mechanics, as well as tweaking the expressions and dialogue of the entire main story!

Hey, my name is Gala and I wanted to share a hack I created! This hack has been in the works since October of 2023, and is a very big feat of mine. The game’s plot itself is largely unchanged, but bits of everything else have been altered in minor or major ways. I’ll go into some of the more important changes below, but there is an in-depth spreadsheet here.

If you don’t feel like reading a wall of text, that’s okay! Download it for yourself and enjoy! Join the Discord to keep up to date on the latest news regarding PMD: Explorers Remixed! You can also check out my YouTube!

  • This hack alters aspects of the game’s story. Some characters look different and have new names. The entire game's script has edited dialogue to remedy poor translations and poorly conveyed emotions. The portraits of characters are more expressive where possible. However, that is the extent of my meddling. This isn’t EoS rebuilt from the ground up, it’s more-so a modified experience that allows me to learn the ropes of making an EoS ROM Hack!

  • We are planning to rework the post-game in a later update, but for now, the majority of our changes land in the main storyline before you graduate the guild. All of the pre-graduation dungeons have had their spawn tables revised with our new Pokémon.

  • You are able to evolve your starter and partner as soon as you discover the Luminous Spring!

  • Thanks to an amazing skypatch, ‘StarterMenuTool’ (credits to Chesyon, Adex, HeckaBad, Irdkwia), we have been able to expand the starter list drastically. Our community has voted on 85 Pokémon to be included as starters! There are even some unique picks such as Golett, Wimpod, and even Cosmog! We have also included every single traditional starter from the mainline games! We’ve worked hard to modernize all our starter learnsets.

  • This hack includes the Fairy type, along with 39 added moves and 22 added abilities!

  • We have added most SkyTemple community patches, which includes things such as Manual Team Control, the Move Growth system from modern PMD titles, Non-interruptive Weather, and many more! It all comes together to make the experience fresh and exciting!

  • We’ve also included the necessary applications to apply this patch to an untampered, US ROM of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky. Assets were provided by many people through places such as the PMD Sprite Repository, so check it out to give the artists some love! Due credit is on the spreadsheet.

2.3 Release!

What's New in Version 2.3.0   See changelog

Released

PMD: Explorers Remixed 2.3 is out!

We are hosting it in two places: Hackdex - Automatically patches for you if you have the correct ROM. If the website is rejecting your ROM, make sure to clean it. Project Pokemon - Good, ol’ manual patching. You can also find the patch with MoveGrowth disabled here.

Save Compatibility:

Our official stance for this release is that we want you to start a new save file. We can’t stop you from trying to use an old one, but we also won’t be able to assist with any issues that arise from those endeavors. Rest assured we have taken the necessary steps to allow 2.3 save files to be used with future versions. This will be the last time we have to ask you to start from scratch (though you will probably want to when you see what we have planned for 2.4 and 3.0)

Spreadsheet:

Find our data spreadsheet here. It contains all the added moves, abilities, starters, and a full Pokédex. It also has recruit locations and evolution methods.

Starters:

  • 85 starter choices, voted on by you!
  • Each starter family has had their learnset, abilities and base stats cleaned up.
  • Each starter has at least 17 moves in their learnset. The final move is learned at level 68. (or 72 in the case of Draco Meteor, Blast Burn etc.)
  • Some distantly related Pokemon have been linked through Evolution! For example, Donphan can evolve into either Great Tusk or Iron Treads!
  • Most starters are available to recruit from dungeons before Guild Graduation.
  • All fully evolved starters have at least one move they can only obtain through relearning.
  • All starter families get an Exclusive Item!

Pokemon:

  • All Pokémon have had their learnsets modernized.
  • Each Pokémon has two abilities.
  • Many Pokémon have been given an additional type, view the list below:

Pokemon Typing Changes:

  • Blastoise - Water/Steel
  • Mega Blastoise - Water/Steel
  • Arbok - Poison/Dark

Mega Evolutions:

  • The following Pokémon unfortunately didn't receive animations in time, so we are using the Shiny versions as a placeholder: Mega Venusaur, Mega Blastoise, Mega Meganium, Mega Dragonite, Mega Blaziken, Mega Swampert, Mega Froslass, Mega Metagross, Mega Golurk, Mega Chesnaught, Mega Delphox, Mega Greninja, Iron Treads, Mega Sceptile, Mega Scizor, Mega Pinsir, Mega Meganium, Mega Heracross, Raging Bolt, Mega Absol Z, Gouging Fire, Mega Golisopod, Mega Emboar, Mega Chandelure, Mega Raichu X, Mega Raichu Y, Mega Gyarados, Mega Espurr, Mega Lucario Z, Mr. Rime, and Toedscruel.
  • 410 IQ (4.5 stars) is the requirement for Mega Evolution. It is performed at Luminous Spring like any other evolution.
  • They all gain new abilities, and sometimes a new type.
  • Mega Evolution is a reversible process, just take your Mega Pokémon back to the pool and it can devolve back into its previous form.
  • Most of them don't gain new learnsets or TMs, unless they gained a type that didn't make sense to add moves of that type to the earlier forms.
  • Due to limited space, we could not include every available Pokémon’s Mega Evolution.

Moves:

  • Thanks to Jawshoeuh and Adex, we're up to 44 added moves now! We’ve combed through every available Pokémon and added moves that Gamefreak gave them in future generations.

  • Starters have all had their vanilla learnsets expanded to at least 17 moves each.

  • 3 additional TMs: Play Rough, Moonblast and Alluring Voice.

  • Snore is now twice as powerful and hits all enemies around the user.

  • Knock Off now deals damage, and deals more damage if it knocks an item off.

  • Beat Up is now used on an ally or foe in front. It still summons your team to your side regardless of the target, but the targeted foe is also dealt damage. It has a BP of 5.

  • Worry Seed now has a new effect: 100% chance to confuse hit targets.

  • Flash is now a 'room-wide' move.

  • Powder Snow is now a 'tiles around the user' move.

  • Icy Wind has lost its slow effect, and now has a 10% chance to freeze the target.

  • Ice Fang now cannot freeze the target.

  • Powder Snow, Ice Punch, Blizzard and Ice Beam all have lost their chance to freeze, and have a 10% chance to slow the target's Movement Speed.

  • Ominous Wind and Silver Wind no longer have a chance to omni-boost. Their room-wide radius remains.

  • AI will now only use a move with a room-wide radius if there is an enemy within two tiles of them.

  • Hyper Voice now has a range of ‘8 tiles around the user’.

  • Frenzy Plant now has a range of ‘8 tiles around the user’.

  • Many moves have had their BP adjusted so that they closer match their power level in the mainline games.

  • Many moves are now a new type, see below:

    • Morning Sun - Fire
    • Sweet Scent - Grass
    • Sharpen - Steel
    • Razor Wind - Flying
    • Focus Energy - Fighting
    • Mean Look - Dark
    • Mind Reader - Psychic
    • Scary Face - Dark
    • Psych Up - Psychic
    • Growth - Grass
    • Horn Drill - Ground
    • Rest - Normal
    • Healing Wish - Fairy
    • Whirlwind - Flying
    • Present - Ice
    • Perish Song - Ghost
    • Rock Climb - Rock
    • Shell Smash - Water
    • Covet - Fairy
    • Captivate - Fairy
    • Flash - Electric
    • Lucky Chant - Fairy
    • Mega Punch - Fighting
    • Attract - Fairy
    • Recover - Psychic
    • Cut - Bug
    • Spike Cannon - Steel
    • Pain Split - Ghost

Abilities:

  • 22 new abilities from patches by Gelius, Adex, Critchy and Assidion! Many starters gained one of them.
  • Many abilities have been buffed. You can view these by looking for the ‘BUFFED!’ tag on the ability spreadsheet.

Misc Things:

  • If you can recruit a Pokémon, there's a good chance we included its entire family, such as Megas and regional forms. We couldn't include them all, due to limited ROM space, but the majority of them are in there.
  • There is now a two-way passage between Sharpedo Rock base and the Job Board room in Wigglytuff’s guild. It is available for use once you’re able to freely enter Sharpedo Rock base.
  • Pokemon no longer drop Unown Stones, and Aegis Cave uses a different item for its puzzles.
  • Male Pokemon no longer get an increased crit rate.
  • Female Pokemon no longer get increased accuracy.
  • Spinda Recruits only include the base form of our starters.
  • Spinda Eggs only include baby Pokémon. This is the only way to recruit a Toxel in 2.3, happy hunting!

Future:

From here, we will begin work on 2.4, which will include: 280 new Pokémon! New spawn tables for every single dungeon in the game!

Thank you all for your patience, and we hope you enjoy the update!

Love the new Starter options! Though I would like to know how the PC's Aura colour/Aura Bow colour is determined in this mod?

Response from the author:

So I've actually completely removed the Personality quiz from the game! So therefore the bow aura is not a factor when determining your starter. Now you simply choose from the list of available options and enjoy the game to your leisure! I hope this answered your question!

Nice game but please change the Accuracy of flying type attack because even if the pokemon has Hustle it misses a lot more then the other attacks with Archen.

I have had times where without any Accuracy being changed that Wing attack missed 10 times in a row and the same with Drill Peck and in contrary with the other attacks the record was 5 with -3 Accuracy on Rock throw

Response from the author:

Yeahh, it's difficult to balance Archen in a way that's rewarding for the effort you have to put in. I'll look into flying moves as well as Archen as a whole to resolve this issue.

It crashes when I try to load special episode 5, which is very disappointing because I was looking forward to the Gala version.
Also, you wrote before that Emolga was missing, but I was able to add it on my own, so it's not a problem.

Response from the author:

Yeah, the special episode has been really fickle, and it's been difficult to figure out what exactly is causing it to become unplayable. This'll unfortunately be the case for a while, but I do plan on tackling the issue at some point in the future. Also, have fun with Emolga! Thanks for the review!

Amazeingly good and fun. The only thing i cant figure out is how to evolve eevee into a sylveon. Otherwise being in the post game atm has made this very very fun!

Just started the Hack and I've got to say i really enjoy all the extra options for starters and partners. I'd just really like to know if the Player Character and Partner can evolve? I only remember that they couldn't evolve in the original.

I'm just starting but the game now is pretty good, I'm doing a mono dark type run and i see that sandile does not have a sleep position/animation so when it's supposed to be sleeping I see it walking

This has been such a blast to play through so far (using TWiLight Menu++ on my 3DS). Everything has been fine up until Quicksand Cave story-wise where, after the player and their partner fall through the quicksand, I am unable to complete the cutscene since we just sit there and no buttons work. Unfortunately this means I can’t progress in the story past this point.

I chose Beldum as the player and Wimpod as my partner; not sure if that has to do with anything but you never know.

Is this a known issue?

EDIT: Saw someone else in the Discord has this problem with Beldum + Wimpod and I did what they did—restarted a few times while tapping multiple buttons as fast as possible. After the 5th restart it worked. I think it would still be a good idea to investigate in a future patch though.

Response from the author:

I have been made aware of this issue, and I'm not exactly sure what the main cause of it is. I do have a theory, but nothing concrete. When I feel ready to come out of hiatus, this'll definitely be one of the first things I tackle for sure!

Even if it's not finished nor perfect yet, the ideas behind it and the Implementation are great. I was looking for EoS hacks for a long time because I love what was doable for the mainline games. This right here is exactly the kind of romhack EoS needs to be the best version of itself and I hope it gets even better 👍🏻 Great Work, keep it up.

Response from the author:

I really appreciate the kind words! This project has been a fun passion of mine since the start, and I'm excited to see how this project will end up. It's far from perfect, but I'm glad that the vision I have for this hack isn't quite lost. I really do hope you enjoy playing my hack, and look forward to the stuff I have planned for the future!

Did Hisui's Zorua evolve? If not, that's okay

Response from the author:

Hisuian Zorua should be able to evolve! If you're curious of evolution info you can join the discord and find the info channel with all the dungeon, evolution, and changelog info!

I love all the new starters and it's very well made, though it would be nice if there were non shiny variants to some Pokemon but that's mostly personal preference wwww. Is it possible you could re-add riolu to this list? I personally love playing as one with one of the cool added Pokemon as partner like h.zorua

Hi! I really loved the new options for starters and partners, but I have a issue while playing with Eevee and H. Zorua. Echoed Voice don't work at all. Two messages appears "Can't use that diagonally" and "Can't use that here!".

Response from the author:

Hey, I've actually fixed this bug in the 1.6.0 release version I posted earlier this morning. If any problems persist, be sure to join the discord and make a support ticket for bugs and general support!

The hack is very well done, but unfortunately I find it a bit too difficult and unfortunately there is only the option to save via the emulator. Unfortunately, the message Save failed appears in the game

Response from the author:

Hey, thanks for the review! I am actively working to fix many of the difficulty issues I am finding within my hack, as an intense difficulty curve wasn't exactly the goal with this game... Stay tuned for the next big update for a more enjoyment-oriented experience!

As for the saving issue, you're likely either using MelonDS or Drastic. I added a saving Patch which fixes many saving errors, but the custom code causes saving to fail in those two emulators. I recommend using RetroArch with a DeSmuME core! (Or just DeSmuME standalone, either works.)

I do hope you get around to enjoying my hack, and thanks again for being my first ever review! Happy holidays!!

I discovered this 'remix' and wanted to try it out for myself! I was incredibly excited. Everything was set up on my laptop, buttons mapped to my controller and I was entirely ready to experience nostalgia with new little twists like being able to play as a new starter like shiny Zorua! However, upon saving Azuril from Drowzie when we get the cutscene with the 'shadowed' figure I couldn't help but notice that the silhouette is not Grovyle, but a Leafeon. A self insert of the character that introduces itself at the beginning as the one who made the remix and I understand what 'see you later' means now. I understood that 'some' pokemon might be replaced with other kinds, but not one of the CORE characters of the game. This is a lovely project, but Grovyle is one of my favorite aspects of pokemon mystery dungeon, Explorers of sky. I was so excited to meet him again and ultimately build up to one of the very special episodes in the endgame that makes me tear up at the end every time. I cannot continue playing knowing that instead, i'm left with a leafeon and not dear Grovyle. I can only HOPE that we may be able to pick whether we want a leafeon or Grovyle in the future.

Is there a list of what choices lead to what your player Mon is? I can't choose mine so I'm looking for a personality quiz answer sheet.

Response from the author:

I've removed the personality quiz, and no starter options are paired with any particular nature. This is due to the sheer amount of starter options, which resulted in the groups, which conflict with the nature categories. Just pick your favorite Pokémon and enjoy!

Question on how to use this. I was trying to input it into my emulator, I use Delta. I’m really new to this and I don’t really know what to do, how or where would I input this file so I can use it? Or what emulator do you recommend for this file?

It looks so fun, but I don't understand how to contact for help. I have super NDS Pro and I downloaded explorer of sky emulator, but it won't let me patch them 😥 It says X not implemented: Secondary decompressor. What do I do? I really want to play

Response from the author:

I unfortunately am not well informed on that specific emulator, but I am seeing possible solutions online! I do hope your issue is resolved, but if not you can always join the discord to get some help from other members.

Hello! I have a problem. I wanted to try your mod out but can't figure out how to use the file on RetroArch. I'm having trouble trying to get it to work and was very saddened that I couldn't figure it out. I wish it would work for Drastic as it is easier to use but says file not usable/doesn't work. I really really want to play the mod can I please have some help?
