Hey,

I'm new to this game editing, and there’s an over whelming amount of information i must process before i can start! So I apologise for the newbie question:

Basically I have some old hardware i used to use for ruby and firered. It's an action replay max duo (Google it to see what it looks like). It has two slots for GBA and DS. The DS slot allows the user to backup game saves.

I was wondering if this was the minimum requirements for editing game saves on Soul Silver. For making Pokémon, and editing them?

NOTE: I have yet to purchase the game. I'm just getting back into pokemon. If i need new AR hardware, i want to buy the game and hardware to save on shipping

Thanks,

NKK

You will probably find that the AR Max Duo may not backup Soulsilver or Heartgold saves as the more recent ARDSi is not able to read them. No harm in trying though. When you get the save onto a PC it would need to be converted to .sav format (there are downloads or online stuff for that).

I have an NDS Adaptor Plus which definitely backs up SS and HG saves (to my knowledge the only device that does as the earlier NDS Adaptor does not nor the ARDSi). These NDS Adaptor Pluses can be bought from Hong Kong or presumably ebay. I live in the UK and was able to get mine off an Amazon seller (who also sells the device on ebay). The advantage of the NDS Adaptor Plus is that the save is in the correct format for the Editors (I prefer to use the editor called Pokegen which I find easier than Pokesav - check the first topic in the RAM section here)

You can only back up Diamond, Pearl or Platinum saves with an ARDSi (at some point they may bring out a new one that gets around the problem with HG and SS saves). You also need a Micro SD card to plug in the ARDSi for backing up the saves onto. You then need an USB Card Reader that accepts Micros SD cards (or get a Micro SD card with a normal SD card adaptor so that an SD card reader will do the job). Having read the card on the PC then you need to use the converter program. Cost for Cost, an ARDSi and Micro SD card and a means to read it on the PC probably works out the same as buying an NDS Adaptor Plus (which is by far the easiest to use anyway).

Thanks guys. You're all absolute legends!

So y'all say i would be better to pick up a new adaptor? so the NDS Adaptor Plus is the best way to go?

Will it work with the 1st gen DS? I'm waiting for the 3DDS to come and buy it!

Thanks!

NDS Adaptor Plus is absolutely the best. I rarely use my ARDSi now. You just plug the game cartridge into the Adaptor Plus and connect it to a USB socket in your PC. The included software transfers the Pokemon save in the correct format for Pokesav/Pokegen. It will back up all current DS game saves. And of course transfer edited saves back to the cartridge.

Not sure how easy it is to get where you are. In the UK I could have bought off an Amazon seller or the same people on ebay. I went with the Amazon deal and it arrived in less than 48 hours.

First post, great forum you guys got here, very rich in information.

So NDS Adapter Plus reads/writes to retail cartridges? Are there any other solutions to the HG/SS problem besides hardware backup utilities? NDS Backup Tool Wifi v.31f says "Save Type: Unknown" and eepinator v1 detects as 8192 bytes.

It certainly would be nice to use a pokewalker with a sav that's been started on my R4i.
