Simulating trade evolutions on Gen 3 games

I'm currently playing FireRed and Emerald on an emulator, and I want to evolve some trade evolution Pokemon (Alakazam, Machamp, Gengar, etc).

 

Can I just change the species of each of these Pokemon in PKHeX (Kadabra --> Alakazam), or is anything else required? Memories were only added in later generations, right? Is there any other step I'm missing to make this as close to legit as possible?

 

Or is there a better way to do this? I'm using the current version of Visualboyadvance-M but I haven't been able to successfully trade between the 2 games with 2 copies of the emulator. It just gives communication errors. Is there a recommended emulator for trading between two Gen 3 games?
