2013 International Challenge January Master Division Team help?

I have entered the January Wi-fi battle Tournament and I have two teams that I use and both seem to do fairly well in online wi-fi battles, I use a Volt-Turn team and a Drizzle team but I am wondering given the current Meta what team should I use?

Just wondering since I've never joined a competition before, and I might plan to sign up before the 15th, and upon reading the rules etc. there are some things I would like to know but can't find answers;

How is the match up made? Is it based on how many gym badges one had acquired in-game, or does how many gym badges owned doesn't matter during competition? How about the pokemon levels sent to the battle box for use in the competition, will the number of badges own effect the way the pokemon respond during the event?
