Pokemon Selection Help

Hello, sorry if this is the wrong place to post this but I have had a hard time locating a proper thread. I'm wanting to learn the basics and advances of building various pokemon teams. I plan on creating a team to enjoy the storyline of HeartGold with

and various teams to competitive battling. I also have a plan on possibly creating my own gym system for fun with friends. So the main question is, can anyone help provide tips/tutorials on learning about pokemon and designing a team? I used to play quite often until Diamond/Pearl and got bored pretty fast, since Gold was my original favorite I am trying to catch up with all the new pokemon and ideas out there.
