Pkhex and OR save data generated by gateway. Do I need to do more to add pkm?

I dumped my retail OR using gateway and I tried to dump my save but it was too much work and I gave up. I think I needed something else.

So if I start playing OR on my gateway, it will be a new save since my previous save is in the retail copy.

Gateway generates .sav for each game with the format <titleid>.sav and it is like 512 KB

so on pkhex, do I just open the .sav and I can proceed to start editing or adding Pokemon or do I have to do something more?

You need to install the cia savedatafiler and extract the save file from the ROM. This will create a file named "main" on your 3DS SD card that you can freely open with PKHex. Once you are done editing, save the file and import it back to the ROM with savedatafiler. That is it, you are done. A little research on Google will help you obtain, install and use savedatafiler.
