My R4I wont update or work

Hi, I recently bought an r4i card from a flea market (I was wary of it not being real but I bought it anyways) I took it home and added the files needed to use it. Than I loaded it up on both my consoles (DSI and 3DS) and neither of them worked. It simply told me to hold down my power button and turn off my 3DS/DSI. Than I took it to a relative of mine to see if he could help, and he spent hours on it and it didn't work. Than he loaded it up on his old DS lite, but when he went to the update menu, it wouldn't show the option to start the update. I have tried again and again to figure out a way to fix this but I haven't been able to find a way. I have even installed the new 1.80 firmware and added it to the root, and deleted all files so all it contains now is the 4 files from the winrar package. If you could please help me find a way to update my flashcard so i can play games on my 3DS please help me.
