3rd Gen starter Pokemon save data location?

I can't for the life of me figure this out, so I'm going to ask for help.

In the 3rd Generation games (LeafGreen/FireRed, Ruby/Sapphire, Emerald) where is the data for the starter Pokemon stored in the save file?

In LeafGreen there is a tutor who gives you the most powerful move for your starter Pokemon's type, and in all games the starter Pokemon is mentioned over and over throughout the story (even if one erases the actual starter Pokemon from the game with a save editor, or lets the starter go free). Where is this information stored, and how can it be edited/changed?

If anyone knows, please ease my pain.
