  • Starter Mod

After creating a modpack, one such mod you can add for Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky is the Starter Mod, a modification that changes the available starters you can use.

Before continuing, please make sure you've reached the "Making Mods" section of the Sky Editor guide to ROM editing.

    Creating the Project

    1. On the New Project window, choose "Starter Mod" in the dropdown, and fill in the name with something that makes sense. Then click OK.
      image.png
    2. Expand the project you just created and open "Starter Pokemon". You can do this either by double-clicking or by right-clicking and clicking Open.
      image.png
    3. Edit things to your liking. You should see something that looks like this:
      image.png
For the purpose of this guide, we'll do this:
      image.png
You can also go to the Partner tab and customize things. Be careful, since the game will not let you choose anything with the same type as the player.
      image.png
For the purpose of this guide, we'll do this:
      image.png
    4. Click File -> Save -> Save File.
      image.png

You can now build the modpack, continue editing, or move create another project.

    The Result

When you create a new save, you should see the results of your modifications as you would expect. Here's what my example edits look like:

    PatchedRom__30516.pngPatchedRom__30840.pngPatchedRom__30974.png

    Remarks

Observe how there's no portraits for Grovyle or Porygon. This is because many unplayable Pokémon do not have all of the usual emotions, like the grin that's normally here. We'll want to copy the default portrait to the other emotions to be less distracting. Luckily, this is very simple, as the Portrait Mod does this as soon as you create the project. Follow the instructions for the Portrait Mod, then build them together:

The result of the two working together works like this:

Is there a way you can add in extra slots for the player's Natures and Partners?

Unfortunately, no, not with my current skill set. It would require some ASM edits that I don't know how to do.

Sorry for the daft question, but I'm wanting to change my starter to Mew. However whenever I save the file, click off and return to editing it, it's automatically changed Mew to Mewtwo, probably assumed that I left an incomplete name. How can I get around this? Found some good portraits for Mew that I want to try out.

    Sorry for the late reply.

I pushed an update that will force the dropdown to pay attention to the backspace key: https://teamcity.projectpokemon.org/repository/download/SkyEditor_SkyEditorROMEditor_B/42409:id/SkyEditor.ROMEditor.UI.WPF Build 196.zip

If you choose not to update, you'll need to specifically choose Mew from the dropdown without typing it in.

Testing this is kinda making me want to try playing as Mew some day:

Is there a way to edit existing pokemon's type/moveset/stats so we can turn them into pokemon from future generations?

Using some of psy_commando's statsutil (there's a mod for it), it's possible to a certain extent, but I think adding Pokemon from future generations is beyond current know-how. In any case, it'll be quite a lot of work.

Somehow the sky form Shaymin is always stuck in this odd position in cutscenes but stands normally when playing

After I played the third time it went to normal. I wonder if it has something to do with the partner or was it just a coincidence that it worked weirdly when I used vulpix

    glitch 3.png

EDIT: I figured it out. It is the gender choice in the quiz that seems to be affecting the idle

Hey, I don't know if it's just me, but the first 2/3 of OP's first post are entirely invisible to me. No text, no pictures, just blank screen until suddenly it starts up 2/3 through. Is anyone else experiencing this issue, and if so, is there a solution?

Ok... I dunno if playing on an emulator or using a ROM downloaded from the WEB doesn't work, but my USA Copy of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon - Explorers of Sky won't save the changes I made.

Basically what I did was that for both the player and partner's Pokemon would be at their final evolution. (except for Eevee, because it has 3 evolution paths.)

Yet when I get Hasty, I get a Shinx instead of Luxray.
Is there an extra step I missed, does saving specific files affect anything? I saved all, then the file only.

Edit: Went to get a different USA file, since I wasn't sure if the first counted due to it having the *** suffix. But now that I got a different one, it still has the same effect.

One common cause of this is that after you make the changes to the starter Pokémon, the filename in the current tab should have a "*" next to it, and when you use File -> Save -> Save File, it goes away. If that's not it, try looking for any errors in the errors window. If there's still nothing there, please send me the zip file that Sky Editor automatically creates.

Uhm... What current tab? The file where the ROM is located? The file of the Modpack? Or the File of the Editor?
    I'll check all three.

    Edit: https://gyazo.com/e7778b4d4926be9419ea341c073ffbdb
Looking at the ROM file... I don't see the "*" beside the file.

Second Edit: Ok... I changed something in the editor, and yet there is no "*" at all.

    Third Edit: This??? https://gyazo.com/ceb91d015c098b88ac2508cf21375950
What does the "*" mean anyway? Because, yes, it disappears if I save. Ima get a GIF, holdup.

    Fourth Edit: https://gyazo.com/2a3e408e500f1df136ea88e7d045f706
Wait... The "*" Stays there. Should it do that, or not???

Fifth Edit: I didn't get a GIF, and yes I am aware these are a LOT of edits.
But I did "Save File" now, and the "*" disappears. It doesn't work when I do "Save All", but the * stays. And it DOES disappear if I do "Save File". Neither worked.
Gonna get the .Zip file that it creates... Uhm... Where is it?

    Edited by Malcheonne
To alert Evan about the "*".

If you close the file and reopen it, are your changes still there? If so, does it still not work when you use Solution -> Build?

But I did save it... Like twice. Both with "Save All" and "Save File".

I'll do one more from scratch just to make sure.

Edit: ... I had to hit "Save Solution"??? WAIT A SECOND! Let me see if I do this mod right, then if the file keeps the saves.

    Second Edit: Ok... https://gyazo.com/e3121cf9e24d0ed2776a3f751a8b47e3

Supposed effect is that I should be a Grovyle, and I have the .skysln file. While I have the file, the changes still aren't in effect.

I don't think other people in the thread see the edits on your comments, so you'll probably have to make a new one for evandixon to notice that you still need help. I'm also interested in seeing this troubleshoot play out, so I can know what to do in case this happens to me

Alright, thanks! But... I used the link in the Introduction. I'll try using the latest version anyway.

Okay. Just used the latest version, and here's what I did step by step.

    1. I clicked the underlined 4.2.12.0 link and downloaded the file.

    2. The file immediately started the download, stragely...

    3. I zipped the files into a single folder

    4. I open the file, and check the version. It displays 4.2.12.0, letting me know it is still the latest version.

    5. I made the Starter Mod, changing all of the Pokemon to be one evolution higher than they'd normally be, unless the pokemon just doesn't have it's evolution programmed in. Only instance of this being the case is Munchlax, at least from my experience.

    6. I did all 3 save options: Save File, Save Solution, and Save All.

    7. I find a file called DS Patcher in the folder where I extracted the Editor.

    8. I patch the Source Rom. The GUI of the Patcher makes it look like it would make the Source Rom's mods take effect.

    9. I run the file using DeSmuMe manually.

    10. I get Shinx instead  of Luxio.

    Am I missing something???

You mean in the same folder as Sky Editor itself? That's the program that'll go in the zip that Sky Editor creates; the zip you can distribute if you so choose.

Instead of manually starting DS Patcher, use Solution -> Build. When that's complete, you'll find PatchedRom.nds in the Modpack directiry in the directory you chose in step 5.
