  • Starter Mod

This mod patches a lot of things to bring the best possible playing experience. Here's what it will patch for you:

    • Starter editing - Makes playing as other Pokémon possible
    • High-Res model patching - Prevents your model from disappearing during certain closeups
    • Portrait patching - Shows the default portrait in the absence of a more specific emotion portrait
    • Animation patching - Substitute missing story animations with dungeon ones to avoid the attack animation being used for everything
    • And something else in the scripts specific to Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon that can't be mentioned without revealing spoilers. It is the last item in a similar list in this video if you're fine with being spoiled, or if you've seen it before.

You must have Java on your computer to use this.

This has been tested on the North American and European versions of Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, and the North American version of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity. I don't know if will work on the Japanese version of Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, but it will not work on any other version of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity.

    Instructions

    1. On the New Project window, choose "Starter Mod" in the drop-down, and fill in the name with something that makes sense. Then click OK.
      image.png
    2. Wait until the loading is complete. This is one of the heavier mods, and may take some time even on beefier computers.
    3. Save the solution, to avoid having to repeat step 2 if something goes wrong.
    4. Expand the project you just created and open "fixed_pokemon.bin". You can do this either by double-clicking or by right-clicking and clicking Open.
      image.png
    5. Edit things to your liking. You should see this when editing Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon (Gates to Infinity has a much simpler interface):
      image.png
For the purpose of this guide, I'll do this:
      image.png
      Things to consider:
      • Each Pokémon must have 4 moves. It's been a while since I tried having less, but I remember things not working with fewer than 4 moves. In my example, I got the first three moves from the level up, and the fourth from Zorua's set of egg moves, although you are not required to stick to these; you can pick anything you want.
      • (PSMD only) The evolution must be the final evolution in the line. If you pick a Pokémon with multiple evolutions, the first on will be used. Refer to the PSMD Pokédex index to find which evolution comes first (for example, if the starter is Eevee, the first evolution is Vaporeon).
    6. Click File -> Save -> Save File.
      image.png
    7. You can now rebuild the mod-pack. Note that this may take a while.

Only the first evolution in the index of a branched line will work, but for fully evolved pokemon with alternate forms, like sawsbuck, vivillon or meowstic, can you choose any of them or are you still restricted to the first one in the index?

Would like to know if you could have a mega evolution as the evo, also

It's restricted to the first form. And mega evolution works a little differently and won't happen with scarf evolution.

Hello, I have a few questions regarding the starter mod.

In the tutorial, it stated that I could use any .3ds file as the rom source for applying modpacks. Does this mean I can use any decrypted rom I got off the internet as the source, and not specifically the one saved to my 3ds SD?

I'm also unsure on how to apply the edited ROM to my digital copy. I don't have Luma, and currently only have homebrew launcher through the steeldivers exploit. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you! :)

Technically yes, but we don't condone piracy on this site. Please try to dump your game yourself. If GodMode9 isn't an option, try braindump.

Check "HANS" in the modpack properties:

Ok, I'll give braindump a try and look into HANS. Thank you for the quick response and help!

everytime when i try to open fixed_pokemon.bin the program crashes with the following error

    https://pastebin.com/4M6ZZ72d

I pushed an update that should solve the immediate problem. Only thing is that the error shown is an error in showing the real error, so it's likely it still won't work. However, as long as the update works, the next error message will be more relevant.

I'm not entirely sure if I did something wrong but if I have "Portrait Patching" enabled my game crashes every time a portrait is loaded on screen. The issue goes away when I disable it but the portrait boxes don't show the pokemon. Any advice on what I can do to fix this?

Is this for PSMD or GTI? And do you have any other projects besides the starter mod?

This is for PSMD and I am only using the Starter Mod. Even if I don't change the player/partner, I still get the crash upon a portrait being loaded.

Sorry for the delay. This has been fixed in the lastest build. You will need to create a new solution, to avoid corrupted data.

Could you attach the modpack zip located in (Solution Directory)/Modpack/Output?

Hiya, I posted before. Got a new issue.
I'm able to successfully repack GTI starter mod builds but they don't seem to work when I test them with Citra.
Is that an emulation-specific problem or something else?

    Here's my modpack for reference.

Fixed in the latest commit. Please let me know how well it works. You've chosen a version of a Pokémon that might experience other issues.

Thanks! Seems to be working well for now past the initial cutscenes. Makes sense that GTI is the least accessible.
I'll report if anything goes wrong.

Edit: Choice of Pokemon is noted, I'll pick something more sensible.

I'm having an issue where my pokémon selection menu isn't loading correctly. Luma has patching enabled and other romhacks are working. Attached is the Modpack file. None of the custom starters are loading- it's just the vanilla one.

Please attach the .zip file that Sky Editor makes. Not only is it smaller, it also contains the tools needed to build for output formats other than LayeredFS. (Also there's potential legal implications with uploading complete files like that, which are summarized here.)

So, with the Tutorial, it says to choose 'Starter Mod', but I don't see that as an option? Is something wrong in that?
    I'm using SkyEditor 4.2.12.0

I can also give a screenshot of what I see.

EDIT: Super Mystery Dungeon, sorry. forgot to mention that.

Similarly, I've been playing as an Espurr and it seems like I end up as a male Meowstic regardless of which of the two Meowstic species I set under "Evolution."

I was hoping to play as a Female Meowstic, not sure if I'm missing something or if it's not possible at the moment.
