  • Starter Mod

    This mod patches a lot of things to bring the best possible playing experience. Here's what it will patch for you:

    • Starter editing - Makes playing as other Pokémon possible
    • High-Res model patching - Prevents your model from disappearing during certain closeups
    • Portrait patching - Shows the default portrait in the absence of a more specific emotion portrait
    • Animation patching - Substitute missing story animations with dungeon ones to avoid the attack animation being used for everything
    • And something else in the scripts specific to Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon that can't be mentioned without revealing spoilers. It is the last item in a similar list in this video if you're fine with being spoiled, or if you've seen it before.

    You must have Java on your computer to use this.

    This has been tested on the North American and European versions of Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, and the North American version of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity. I don't know if will work on the Japanese version of Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, but it will not work on any other version of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity.

    Instructions

    1. On the New Project window, choose "Starter Mod" in the drop-down, and fill in the name with something that makes sense. Then click OK.

    2. Wait until the loading is complete. This is one of the heavier mods, and may take some time even on beefier computers.
    3. Save the solution, to avoid having to repeat step 2 if something goes wrong.
    4. Expand the project you just created and open "fixed_pokemon.bin". You can do this either by double-clicking or by right-clicking and clicking Open.

    5. Edit things to your liking. You should see this when editing Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon (Gates to Infinity has a much simpler interface):

      For the purpose of this guide, I'll do this:

      Things to consider:
      • Each Pokémon must have 4 moves. It's been a while since I tried having less, but I remember things not working with fewer than 4 moves. In my example, I got the first three moves from the level up, and the fourth from Zorua's set of egg moves, although you are not required to stick to these; you can pick anything you want.
      • (PSMD only) The evolution must be the final evolution in the line. If you pick a Pokémon with multiple evolutions, the first on will be used. Refer to the PSMD Pokédex index to find which evolution comes first (for example, if the starter is Eevee, the first evolution is Vaporeon).
    6. Click File -> Save -> Save File.

    7. You can now rebuild the mod-pack. Note that this may take a while.

    Thanks it worked, but now I have another problem, when I'm going to choose my partner the game limits it to only gen 1 and gen 2 pokemon. Granted it's not that much of a problem because I can just edit the game again but I wanted to know if this is a glitch or if it's supposed to be like this

    The UI does a bad job of indicating you can do this, but you can use the Left and Right buttons to see more pages of options.

    Evandixon, I have a problem in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Gates to Infinity, The Sky Editor does not want to build the 'Starter Mod' that I added and that is why I clicked many times on the 'rebuild' option of 'Solution' but still it does not finish the process and it says: 'Extracting Portraits' and in your tutorial it says that the 'Portraits' only works in the PSMD but in this game, and why will it be? I need your help Evandixon!

    Actually no, there is no error in the box but when I gave it to 'build' in Solution, in your tutorial it says that once: "when you give the option build in Solution already there you just have to wait for it to confirm all the mods that you added", in that case I added a Starter Mod in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Gates to Infinity and once I finished modifying everything I hit 'build' and had to wait for it to finish (like I did in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky but still everything worked), but I don't know why this game did not when I was waiting for me to finish, it only lasted 20 seconds to finish (instead with explorers of sky it was 3 minutes that was delaying but it was a success), and then I responded saying: "What, but what happened here." So when I went to the address I said in your tutorial it says it is at: Modpack/(Output), but it turns out when I got there..........

    There was nothing....

    So I said: "How strange, something is happening very strange, I'm sure."

    So when I gave it build again, this time I was watching for that and when I noticed Build Progress it said: "Extracting Portraits", instead the bottom left corner said: "Ready".

    So there you go crazy, only the "Ready" should appear with all its green line when it had completed the entire process of "Build Progress" (that's how the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of sky did it), but it turns out that it was a bit reverse as The more it seems, the more it was in "Loading" in a few seconds and in 20 seconds it now says "Ready" but when I saw the "Build Progress" it said: "Extracting Portraits", I don't know what just happened but there is an error I'm sure .

    Did the ModPack project show up in the Build Progress dialog? If not, there should either be errors in the errors dialog, or the mods are still building.

    Only 3 Pokémon can be edited because the game has separate checks to make sure Pikachu and Tepig are starters for some reason (as a sanity check maybe), and because you only need to edit 2 Pokémon to choose your player and partner, fixing it hasn't been a priority.

    As for stats and moves, that just hasn't been researched thoroughly enough, and it also hasn't been a priority. In Super Mystery Dungeon, the moves are required to be present when modifying starters, while in Gates to Infinity, it just works.

    Tutorial: (PSMD only) The evolution must be the final evolution in the line. If you pick a Pokémon with multiple evolutions, the first on will be used. Refer to the PSMD Pokédex index to find which evolution comes first (for example, if the starter is Eevee, the first evolution is Vaporeon).

     

    But ...., you can also add like this:

    Example:

     

    1st Starter:

    2nd Starter:

    I am using a Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit with 4.8 framework, thanks for answering Evandixon and I solved my request!

    But still I saw your video about Zorua evolving to Zoroak in your video 'Evan', that means that any Pokémon can work, this evolution is unknown, but of all, thanks for answering, I will try to process in your explanation!

    I solved my request thanks to another PSMD that I downloaded that weighed (1.76 GB) and if it could extract the game and when I was ready to build a PSMD Modpack, nothing happens because clearly in the error window if it detects that something is very wrong I don't know why but I want you to help me being a crack in this very useful program 😉😁

    Thanks for making this! I have done everystep and everything opens correctly. one problem however is that i have clicked on save file. but when I open Pokemon Super mystery dungeon rom. it won't appear. it is decrypted and EU, is it a problem with citra? Should i open another file? trust me. i have read all comments on this forum but this is a weird (screenshot pokemon are test)

    *edit* Also i have pressed on Solution -> Build and waited it. the output folder exists but no files @evandixon

    Are there any errors in the errors dialog? (Because of a bug, it won't appear until you run a build after displaying the window.)

    Yes ... if it has an error, that the error board detected and stopped the build of my 3DS rom.

    This one is a bug coming from the UI library that I don't know how to fix. It doesn't always happen, so try saving everything then restarting Sky Editor.

    Oh God I did not know for sure!, because my RAM is 2GB and I need to increase it (maybe to 8GB...), but thanks Evandixon!

    Oh Well, normally I have saved my files many times and that makes me also quit the Sky Editor, but still (it's not about making a new solution, am I wrong, Evandixon?)

    Hello, first thanks for this app,

    I have an infinite loading when i build (infinite at "Repacking Portraits") when i watch in error i have the "OutOfMemoryException" error (I have 8GB ram) even with the error the progress bar keep charging but keep at "Repacking Portraits" Status

    Well i uncheck the portrait box (model was check) in starter mod and the build worked, so i tried to check portraits and uncheck model to see if i could build with only one box checked but it didn't work same error than  beofre so it's only the portrait box.

    i got the editor to work and i saved it when i was finished, how do i open it? do i just load up the base game? i tried this and the starters were unchanged so i'm not quite sure what i did wrong.

    Is it possible to change the starts on PKMD Team DX with this editor btw? I've been looking a a mod/editor in terms of starter pokemon but meh

    I know this is pretty late, but has the crashing problem for Red / Blue Rescue Team ever been solved yet?

    Cause I want my hero to be a Celebi, but the game still crashes when the sprite tries to make certain movements.
