    Pokémon Crystal Gets VC Release

    By Cecillia, in News,

Today an official announcement was made for a 3DS Virtual Console release of Pokémon Crystal. This means that Pokémon from all main-series games can be legitimately transferred to the latest games. Back when Pokemon transitioned onto the Gameboy Advance system, Pokémon from Gen 1 and Gen 2 cartridges weren't legitimately obtainable (via transfer) due to limitations in the link cable design. The release on the 3DS Virtual Console will take place on January the 26th, 2018. In Europe there will be a physical release with the download code in the box, while in Japan there will be a physical release with a magnet based on Crystal's Cartridge, a poster with all the Pokémon released in gen 2 and with a gen 2 type compatibility chart, stickers, and also a download code. There is also a separate download code available in Japan.

The Japanese version holds the possibility to get the GS ball in Goldenrod City's Pokémon Communication Center, but only after beating the Elite Four. For Europe and America releases, while the English trailer announced that players will be able to encounter Celebi, there is no hard confirmation detailing whether it will be done via the GS ball at this point.

We first found out that Pokémon Crystal would likely get a Virtual Console release, as patches supporting Pokémon Crystal was found bundled together with Virtual Console's Pokémon Gold and Silver, as discovered by our well known member @SciresM (tweets as seen below). Later, when Poké Transporter got updated for Gold and Silver support, he discovered that Poké Transporter also preemptively supports Crystal, despite it being unreleased at that point.

For the first time since the 19th of October 2017, there has been an announcement for new Pokémon for Pokémon Go. Today, 50 new Pokémon from Generation 3 got added to the game, with more coming in the coming weeks. Pokémon that are included with the release are: Treecko, Mudkip, and Torchic, amongst other unnamed Pokémon. This release is a follow up to the aforementioned Halloween update, in which they released a handful of Generation 3 Pokémon that included Sableye, Banette, and Duskull.
Besides the aforementioned release of new Pokémon, there also will be an update regarding the weather. A new feature that got added is that there is overworld weather in the game. This means that the interface adapts to the current weather, so if it's sunny the sun will shine in the app, while if it rains there will be rain in the app. These two are just two examples, as there are 4 more new weather types in the app. Also the real world weather has an influence on the attacks of the Pokémon.
The official announcement reads that "attacks of certain types will be more effective during some weather conditions, so a Charizard’s Fire Spin will perform better on sunny days, for example".

Last but not least, a feature focused on weather-based chances for finding pokémon got added as well. This feature means that "for example, you’ll find your odds of discovering Mudkip splashing around will greatly improve on rainy days, as certain Pokémon types will be more commonly found during various weather conditions", as the official site writes.

  • Our picks

    • Since they released over a decade ago, the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games for the Nintendo DS have not had much in the way of ROM editors. Over the past few years, hackers have slowly learned more and more about the inner workings of the games, culminating in the most advanced PMD editor to date: Sky Temple.

SkyTemple is a user-friendly level editor for Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky that gives the user full control over graphics, scripts, Pokémon data, and more, enabling a great amount of creative freedom to prospective ROM hackers to create not just edits of the game, but entirely new levels and plots.
