  • (PSMD Only) Portrait Mod

This mod lets you modify the portraits used in dialogue.

This only supports Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon for now, but can support Gates to Infinity with some more work. Leave feedback in this GitHub issue if you're interested, and I'll prioritize it accordingly.

    Instructions

    1. On the New Project window, choose "Portrait Mod" in the drop-down, and fill in the name with something that makes sense. Then click OK.
      image.png
    2. Wait for the loading to complete.
    3. The portraits are in (Solution Directory)/(Project Directory), in various sub-directories (ignore the "Raw Files" directory).

    Remarks

Unlike in Explorers of Sky, this project will not substitute missing portraits. The Starter Mod will take care of that for you.

Is there any color limit to portraits like there is for Explorers of Sky?

Nope. PSMD (and GTI) support 256 * 256 * 256 colors just like most other formats.

I have a question since I am new to this, what kind of external program do you recommend to work here?

I have little experience with image editing. I usually use MS Paint for simple stuff and GIMP for slightly more complex stuff, but actual artists may have different preferences. Actually editing portraits is out of my skill set, unless I do something silly like add a mustache or a top hat, which I'd probably do in paint. And that's the extent of my art skills 😅

Going through the files, I notice that non-starter pokemon have blank backdrops for the appropriate emotes when there's no portrait to fill that. If I'm using the starter mod and edit any of these portraits to make a full set, will it still default to the default expression for my new starter pokemon, or will it use the edited images set up in here?

If you try to use both at the same time, it will fail because my patchers don't know how to safely merge things yet. For the time being, you'll need to either disable the starter mod's portrait patching (right-click the project, click properties, uncheck the appropriate checkbox, and save) or don't use the portrait mod.

I read the comment about the patchers not merging safely and disabled the portrait patcher in the starter mod, but the game still crashes if I use it and the custom portraits. What should I do?

Made an account just to comment on this: Whenever I click the dropdown menu for the type of mod, it instead lists things like "SkyEditor.ROMEditor.MysteryDungeon.PSMD.PokemonDataInfo". How do I fix this?

this tutorial is very helpful but i had a problem where the program suddenly closed after creating the directory and i don't know if i can recover everything (i had the starter mod finished and saved resolution some minutes before it happened), is there a way i can recover my progress or do i have to start everything again?

Hello, I am new to the subject of the mods of the roms of pokemon mysterious world. And I'm really liking it because I already edited the initial pokemon with the initial pokemon mod of the game pokemon super mistery dungeon. Here is the thing, I want to edit and make the portraits of some of the pokemon in pokemon super mistery dungeon because some of the pokemon don't have those reactions. And I want to ask the following question: what software do you recommend me to edit or make the portraits please?. Greetings to all.
