it doesnt quite work that way... <img src="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure.png" alt=":/" srcset="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/unsure@2x.png 2x" width="20" height="20" /> you cant just learn Japanese, unlike the "romanized" languages (spanish, french, english)

In Japanese, you have to learn 3 alphabets. Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji.

there are 69 Hiragana characters, 68 Katakana characters (excluding about 4 or 5 special characters only used rarely)

To read japanese fluently, you need a mastery of over 2000 kanji... Personally... i only know 59 offhand. to look up kanji in a dictionary, you must know the number of strokes, or the hiragana spelling of the kanji itself.

More written info:

hiragana: used for natural Japanese words, the most common written form of japanese

katakana: used phonetically for non-japanese words, also used for emphasis in written Hiragana scripts

kanji: Chinese characters used in japanese writing, used to evoke greater meaning and definition in a written form.

I: sounds like "ee" (think of the ee, in "cheese")

U: sounds like "oo" (like the o sound in "too")

E: sounds like "eh" (like the e in "bet")

O: sounds like "oh" (oh, as in the interjection: "Oh!")

Note:

i'm using these phonetic examples assuming you are fluent in speaking English...
