  1. Okay, let's see..

Often times, people wish to edit their Pokemon save file with Pokesav, but can't because they either don't know how, or don't have the hardware.

This guide is intended to show the easiest ways of backing up (and restoring) save files either with what you have, or to show you what you need to buy.

    Hmm.. perhaps something like this.

Have you ever wanted to back up your sav, but thought you couldn't - because it's a retail cart? Ever wanted to edit it with PokeGen? Or perhaps, extract your .pkms all at once from the boxes, instead of one by one using the GTS exploit? Well, look no further!

    This guide covers:

    - Methods using only common tools (eg, flashcart, DS Lite; Pokedoc's tool)

    - Troubleshooting (coming soon?)

    - Simple instructions and important information on each procedure

    - Types of extra, physical tools you can buy to make the process easier

^ This could probably be reworded a little more, it's just more organized and gives a quick summary of what's going on.

Anyway, are you sure you want to go with spoilers? It gets a little messy after you open everything.

If I may suggest, I'd say you could just write a section for each tool, with a list of requirements (rather than a flowchart) and hide each in a spoiler. It'd be much easier to navigate and read, overall.

    Though, just my opinion :3

Are you trying to back up Pokemon HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black or White?

    Yes:

Do you have any method of running homebrew via the NDS slot (slot 1) on a DS other than a 3DS or DSi?

    Yes:

Do you have an EZ Flash 3in1?

    Yes:

    Use Pokedoc's backup tool. (Mirror)

    How to back up:

    1. Launch the tool and press B to continue.

    2. Press Backup (Game -> .sav)

    3. Remove your slot 1 flashcart and insert your retail cartridge, then press A.

    4. When prompted, power off, reinsert your flashcart, then reload the Pokedoc's tool.

    5. Press B to continue whe prompted, then either select a file to overwrite, or press L+R to create a new one in whatever directory you are currently in.

Your save file has now been saved to your flashcart.

    How to restore:

    1. Launch the tool and press B to continue

    2. Press Restore (.sav -> Game)

    3. Select a save file to restore.

    4. When prompted, remove your slot 1 flashcart and insert yout game. Press A when you have done so. (Don't worry if it says "File too small or no save chip!" if you have not inserted your retail cartridge yet)

You have sucessfully restored your save file to your retail cartridge.

    No:

Do you have Wifi? (The DS/DS lite only supports WEP)

    Yes:

Use Pokedoc's tool (specific guide comming soon, however, this guide explains how to do this with a backup tool with a similer interface)

    No:

You have insufficient hardware. Please see bottom of post.

    No:

Do you have an Action Replay DSi with a MicroSD card slot or Action Replay Media Edition, and a DS that it will work with (and [obviousy] a MicroSD Card)? (Action Replay Media Edition doesn't work on any DSi model, both don't work on the 3DS)

    Yes:

Use the Action Replay to backup the save file, then use your choice of NDS Save Converters to convert to Raw format.

    No:

Do you have any method of running homebrew from the GBA slot (Slot 2) of a DS (not applicable for DSi's and 3DS's)?

    Yes:

Use the Slot 2 Backup Tool (should be self-explanatory. Ask if you need help.)

I have insufficient hardware. So what now?

You have several options. You could buy the hardware required for some of the options above, or you can try a USB backup adapter.

I personally recommend the NDS Backup Adapter Plus:

    NDS Backup Adapter Plus:

    Pros:

-Supports updates so games that currently are unsupported may be supported in the future.

-Supports backing up games with IR ports

-Supports backing up 3DS save files (with firmware upgrade v3.0)

    -Simple software. Beginner friendly.

    Cons:

-Windows 7 64 bit drivers require Driver Signature Enforcement to be overridden. Options include pressing F8 on start up then selecting Disable Driver Signature Enforcement, or using the Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider.

-Doesn't backup ROM data (however, this will save you legal trouble)

    Where to buy:

Console Source - I recommend these guys (at least for Canada and US residents). However, the price is higher than at other places.

Renchi - I haven't heard of these guys until I did a bing search to find other stores to link to here. Buy at your own risk (however, they may still be a good store)

Quicker Buy - Same story as Renchi

Alternatively, you could buy an SMS4:

    SMS4:

    Pros:

-Driver free (makes me want to go buy one right now....)

-Supports updates so games that currently are unsupported may be supported in the future.

-Supports backing up games with IR ports

    Cons:

-Doesn't back up 3DS saves. (Comming in a future update. If you have an SMS2, then it currently can.)

    Where to buy:

    IC2005

You can feel free to ask for insight before purchasing anything. Be sure to post what hardware you already have.

This guide still needs some fine tuning, so feel free to suggest content.

    The format could be like,

    Title:

    Creator (if possible!):

    Requirements:

    Description:

    Instructions:

    Troubleshooting:

    Games/Consoles supported:

    :3

  2. Well, let's see..

Interesting idea with the nested spoilers.

It looks like much of the stuff could be expanded on a bit more, or linked to at the least. For the sake of clarity, perhaps note that the verdict of 'insufficient hardware' in this guide comes from following the spoiler flowchart.

It also seems you might need some proofreading, though this is a rough draft, so I'm up for it if you'd like me to :3

  3. Okay, I am waaaay lost. I wanted to do my first Rom Hack and with Pokémon White. But I need a .NARC file of the Rom. I can't transform my .NDS file into a .NARC, because none of my programs work, because they need a .dll file, because it doesn't recognize the Rom, because it needs to be executed with whatever... HELP!

    Err. Okay, firstly

A .narc is a nitro archive inside the .nds. The BW .NDS isn't exactly one big .narc, it's made up of around 234 .narcs (and other files). Each containing separate data.

You're going to have to extract the ROM's filesystem, and then find the .narc containing the info you need. Most of the common stuff (eg, sprites, overworld, script data) is out there, but the vast majority of other narcs have only been partially noted and documented.. I have a sort-of complete list somewhere, I think. Not that it matters, since I presume you're not editing that stuff.

Anyway, use DSBuff or something to extract. It's fairly straightforward.

    Good luck!

  4. Now I'm wondering, is it possible for MATTLE Ho-oh to be shiny?

I kind of want to speculate that it can, considering that Colosseum Pokemon data is set when it's generated within Colosseum, not when it's transferred to GBA. Since other Pokemon in Colosseum have the regular chance of being shiny (same as with handheld games) I would presume Ho-oh is the same.

Edit: as Bond pointed out, as well, they didn't start with shiny checks until Gen 4 (as far as we know, that is).

  5. It has been a long time since I've used my bonus disc, but I believe it's 49 Celebi in total per completed Colosseum save:

1 for the Colosseum save game itself

48 for GBA cartridges (1 per non-flagged save)

    Yep.

    This is correct.

The first one will be transferred to the Colosseum Save, while 48 more of them can be transferred to all Japanese Generation III GBA Cartridges. One per-cartridge.

    Also,

48? O_o So there are 48 Celebi in the game that can be distributed to 48 different GBA cartridges?

Let me rephrase that: no, there aren't 48 celebis already in the game; there are 48 GBA-celebis that can be created. Get what I mean?

  6. I don't know what's wrong with your desmume, but it doesn't hurt to give this a shot..

The link below is to my personal copy of desmume, I've been using it for ages now, and I'm very sure it works. Save in-game, and 'Export Backup Memory'. Save the .sav file, and reload the ROM; then 'import backup memory' and select the same sav you just exported. Continue into the game..

See if that works. It's version 0.9.6, btw.

    http://s.pokegts.com/arcee/Desmume.rar

edit: pokegen opens dsvs, open the .sav in Pokesav or something.

edit2: make sure when you're saving, you have pokemon in your PC or party, lol.

    edit3: run DeSmuME_dev.exe, that's the one I usually use.

edit4: make sure you run as administrator (right click > run as administrator)

Hopefully that'll make it failproof :3

  7. Hello! My name is Snow Crystal. I just wanted to say that I was checking the legality of a Charizard that I got, and I know it's hacked, just to see what your legality checker said. Well, it said that the Pokéball was legal; it is obtained in a Masterball. As far as I know, there is no legal way to do this, as you either get Charmander as a starter, putting it into a ragular Pokéball, or you breed for one, still putting it into a regular Pokéball.

no, it's very possible, because of dreamworld. you can get most starters in masterballs this way.

  8. I really like it, good job.

One little thing, its just a suggestion:

Wouldnt it be better to put the Trainer ID after the Pokemons Name? So everything in a folder is in alphabetical order, and not sorted by the OT's ID.

Thanks! Others on the GTS suggested this as well, so...

    Here's v1.2.

  9. Changelog:

    3.0 (8-30-11):

    - Rewritten in C#

    - new GUI

    - faster, stronger, prettier!

    - Characteristics fixed

    - now one exe :3

    - optional naming schemes removed

Disclaimer: None of the 50 switch statements (and their appropriate cases, all 1562 total) were harmed in the making of this program.

    About:

Currently the only .pkm renamer for Gen V files. Select one file, or select multiple files.

Please report any bugs here. < 3 feedback!

    Instructions:

    1. Select the .pkm files to be renamed.

    2. Select the options you want.

    * 'Flawless' will denote {F} on flawless Pokemon.

    * 'Shiny' will denote {S} on shiny Pokemon.

    * 'IVs' will denote the IVs of the Pokemon.

    * 'EVs' will denote the EVs of the Pokemon.

    * 'Show renamed files' is self explanatory.

    3. Select the appropriate generation of .pkm file. This is important, as it will affect the OT name and the characteristic.

    4. Press execute.

    5. Let me know what you think (:

    Credits:

    * First and foremost, shoutouts go to Bond697 and Griver.

    * Without these two, I would be attached to another object by an inclined plane wrapped helically around an axis.

    * More thanks go to projectpokemon's wikia for information, and infinite recursion for the information libraries of ir-gts.

    Issues and comments, post away.

Being a new build and all, there may be bugs.

  10. Oh, hello there.

I was directed to this thread by the lovely Bond697, and to be blunt, I'm eternally grateful that this exists :P

    In case this helps anyone who may have trouble in the future;

I had some issues with it at first, but I found a fix in the DSTT savegame_manager edit a couple pages or so back.

I have the original R4, I'm very sure of it - so I don't know why it refused to recognize savegame_manager.ini. After some playing around, I used http://projectpokemon.org/forums/showthread.php?12405-A-tool-to-backup-HG-SS-saves&p=115386&viewfull=1#post115386 and it worked perfectly. Again, I have no clue why, but hey, why complain? :P It took about 40 minutes to back up both games, 20 mins each. I haven't tried restoring, but I'm sure it works fine.

Using a DSLite, HG/W U game, with an original R4DS, and 1.27 R4 Wood kernel.

Hopefully this provides some aid to another person in this situation.

Again, a thousand thanks. You have no idea how much you've helped me. (:

  11. I know that I'm far from the only person here able to RNG abuse, so if anyone else wants to get in on hosting stuff via GTS, feel free to say something or just start posting stuff. If you can RNG abuse and want to help out but can't set up a fake GTS server for whatever reason, I can host your stuff for you. PM me to discuss it.

    Youuuuuuuuuu. xD

Oh lookeh, it's my first post (ever).

If it counts for anything.. :3 my stuff is all yours (although I think you already have it?) to use. Obviously, I don't have nearly as much as you .. but still, some.

Should you feel the urge.. you know how to find me. C:
