Practically a mix of everything. Rock, Metal, Punk Rock, Rap, Hip-Hop, Classical, Techno, Pop, Dance, you name it. Honestly, rap is a bit confusing and makes my head spin, but it always has a nice catchy beat and chorus to it. :P

I bloody love old school rock and metal. I find bands formed in the last 20 years generally suck (MCR = faecal matter) but there are a few exceptions (DragonForce, Disturbed). Don't like alternative, emo, metalcore, etc.

Do like:

Iron Maiden

Helloween

Judas Priest

Iced Earth

Black Sabbath

Motorhead

Saxon

You get the idea.

Here's the list straight from WMP, A-Z:

Alternative Rock, Breakbeat, Dark Cabaret, Goth Rock, Heavy Metal, Horror Punk, Hip-Hop, Industrial, Industrial Metal, Industrial Rock, Irish Punk, Post-Rock, Punk, Punk Rock, Progressive Metal, Rock, Ska, Steampunk, Symphonic Metal, Synthpop, Techno, Vaudeville.

That covers a lot of stuff. I've got soundtracks too which are obviously a little bit harder to define musically than popular music.

I enjoy alternative rock bands such as Disturbed (although they have a little bit of metal), Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc., and southern rock bands like The Outlaws and Lynyrd Skynyrd. On occasion, I also like dance/techno, as it's fun to listen to at parties, and makes me feel uninhibited. Not many people that I know even know what alt. rock is. They all pretty much listen to the same thing, which gets on my nerves. I also can't stand most radio music. Alternative rock symbolizes the break from commercialism, where artists let their instruments let out what they feel.

EDIT: I also don't like the overhype older artists are getting. Everyone makes fun of Michael Jackson. Then he dies. Now, he's a "saint", just because it's now popular to like him. His music is alright, and made a significant impact in musical history, but why only acknowledge it now that he's dead? The same goes for the Beatles. Although they were more respected throughout history, they had a massive spike in popularity during 2009. Now, people go around acting like they know them like the back of their hand. Why can't people just keep a consistent opinion? Choose your own musical style based on your self-explored preferences, not on what everyone says is an awesome song. I also happen to despise recent teen pop and all it represents.

Jackson wasn't overhyped by his death. He was part of the Motown era and went on to have the biggest selling album of all time (Thriller). His final years had controversy, but his impact on music is not something that came after his death.

Psht... well were to start. I got an open mind when it comes to music but I'm very picky, being a musician myself the song/band has be perfect. As such I listen to a lot of bands that a lot of people haven't of, because I'm conatantly searching high and low for something awesome (and believe me, that isn't an easy job these days :/).

Alternate rock, Hard Rock and progressive rock/metal is where I tend to get my musical kicks though... I usually Hate all the mainstream sounding music, regardless of it being rock metal pop or whatever (paradoxically I hate when my favourite bands don't get their time to shine though :S)... Though lately a kinda pop rock band called Motion City Soundtrack has really taken my fancy Lately :D.

I'll usually like a band/artist if :

  • They have a distinguished vocalist (screaming doesn't count ... though if they can do that too then ... meh cool)
  • They are talented
  • The memebers are likable (I know it's silly, but if the guys a Dbag I'm gunna hate the band ... Pete Wents springs to mind)
  • The don't sound like a 1000 other bands who do exactly what they do but better
  • Aren't completely force fed to me (That ruined kings of leon for me...I can only hear 'Use Somebody' So many times in a year ...let alone twice every 10 minutes)
  • The music just basically sounds cool

My music library of bands and artists that I usually listen to caps at about 85 - 100, so I'll just tell you my top ten lol.

Coheed and Cambria, Tool, A perfect Circle, Fair To Midland, Cire, Karnivool, Chevelle, Incubus, Motion City Sound Track, Dredg.

I too am not a fan of over hyped classic rock, and I don't like people that can't see that some rap is talented. You 'metalheads' might scoff, but Eminem is a hell of a lyricist. Appreciate the rappers and maybe your favourite bands won't be so frowned upon ;).

He had one of, if not THE greatest impact in pop history during his time. During the mid 90s to the mid 00s, his popularity was nowhere near as high as his peak. He was still a household name, but the only reasons people seemed to talk about him anymore were "scandals". When he died, the focus on him increased so much, including his music. I have to admit, even I gave a second thought. Now, everyone hates him or absolutely loves him for reasons they don't fully understand. You have to admit, with "This is It" being passed off as a mainstream movie, and small developments regarding his death still appearing, not to mention that one show with the former Jackson 5, that his death significantly affected the lack of hype around him. And it's only because of his death. If he were still alive, his music wouldn't have had the popularity it had during 2009.

Quite a mix of bands there :o.

You got some similar tastes to me, so I suggest maybe taking a listen to incubus (I don't see them listed there), deftones, tool (in the same vain as muse), a perfect circle and maybe even coheed (a more guitar driven, deeper thought out, sort of motion city soundtrack) :D. And for something a bit on the heavier side Mudvayne. A couple of them are coming off of great new albums too, so a cool time to get into them :D.

Gah, I love Change (In the House of Flies). It has such feeling behind the lyrics.

To Riolu Aura Sphere Now,

I often find myself listening to OP 5 (I forget the name) of Naruto every once in a while. I try to keep up with the new openings, but these things slip by, as I have been reading only the manga for two years (trying hard not to reveal spoilers!). Sometimes I listen to the Japanese Pokémon openings in comparison to the English ones, although I don't watch it anymore. I have also enjoyed songs by Maximum the Hormone, thanks to Death Note. I guess I like music from the more "mainstream" anime out there, but it depends. I don't really care for anime other than the most well-known (Shonen manga is for me!), but I have enjoyed Eureka 7, if that's any different. I'm only reading Naruto and Bleach, but I'll tune in if either is on a particularily awesome chapter (Naruto vs. Pain, Super-Hollow Ichigo). That got a tad off-topic there.

I've been trying to listen to different genres lately, and I find that I like The Mountain Goats. The lyrics to No Children and Oceanographer's Choice are just... it's so incredible and spiritually lifting. It has made me do a lot of thinking. I would classify their music as "bittersweet". Either the lyrics are depressing and the music upbeat, or the other way around.
