Head on over the the gamecube pokemon hacking discord https://discord.gg/aucXehNbwM to shout at me about anything I might have missed.

Must give a massive shoutout to Stars who has helped me throughout this process, and who without his tools I'd have not even managed to turn a Zigzagoon into a Linoone. Would also like to thank FanficPheonix, mikeyX, Brawlersinthezone and Lan for their contributions as well, couldn't have done it without you guys!

There are plenty of other features I'd love to bring to this project in the future, so anyone knowledgeable in the ways of coding who wants to work on a project like this please get in touch!

How to patch

Download either the Johto, Kanto, or Hoenn version of Grand depending on which set of starters and legendaries you want to catch and play with

Apply the patch file to a clean Pokemon ColosseumISO using any UPS patcher. This patch was made for the NTSC (US) version so it will not work on other versions. The iso is quite large so it may take a few minutes.

Always patch onto a clean ISO, even if you are applying an update.

When patching make sure file isn't a nkit file. If it is, please note that the patch will not work and you will need to convert the file into an ordinary ISO, or source another ISO.

Recommend using a fresh save for all the features to work properly

Make sure to use the nuzlocke patch after you've patched it using the main patch

Hey Hi, great work im loving this romhack.

One thing I have to say, the first fight with a shadow pokemon, inside the mayor's house, might be a bit problematic.

I found the only reliable way to defeat it is to set up X-Defend and keep Espeon healed, because shadow furret just deals so much damage.
This isnt a problem by itself, but if you die in this fight you dont respawn in the heal center but in wthe same house instead, and you cant leave until you are done with the fights.
If someone did not bring enough healing items / x-items, they might be stuck here forever hoping for multiple crits or multiple self-hit from furret after using confuse ray.
I dont think you can change the respawn point so tuning the difficutly of this single fight might a good thing?

Aw thank you so much! Really glad to hear you're enjoying it and thanks for giving feedback :)

That fight in particular however is actually 100% beatable.

SPOILERS for anyone who wants to come at this completely blind,

but Furret's catch rate is the same as Makuhita's is in the original game, which is 100%. You can catch the Furret and then the enemy can do literally nothing to you, being a normal type.

Hope you enjoy the rest of it and don't hesitate to give more feedback, it's really appreciated!

I'm having trouble patching - getting a message that the patch is not intended for the Colosseum ISO. It's the US version, so I'm not sure what the issue is. I tried it both with MultiPatch on Mac and NUPS on PC. Does the file have to be a specific filename or something? I'm confused as to what I'm doing wrong.

Is it a nkit file? as if so you need to put it through a program you can find over on Vims lair in order to turn it back into an ordinary ISO :)

Let me know how it goes!

I'm a huge fan of the Gamecube Pokemon games, so I'm hyped for this. However, I think I may need some help with getting this thing to work. I have NUPS, a US version of the game (it's not an nkit version from what I can see), and the newest version of your patch.

When I use the patch I downloaded from this thread in NUPS though, it causes NUPS to crash for some reason. So I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

This might be a dumb question, but how do you download the actual game? When I choose the download file button, it just downloads the documentation and the patch and patcher files. Am I just being dumb? Haha.

Apply the patch to your copy of the game that you dumped from your physical copy & console.

Joined just to say that as of 2021-11-14 this hack boots on GCN via GC-Loader. The only (potential) downside is it will use the same save file from a clean version of Colosseum.

Hi there!

First off I'm loving this so far, I'm all the way in Mount Battle already and having a blast!
I just wanted to let you know (though I'm sure you already do) that the damage calculation for hitting oneself during confusion seems to be off. I believe I was fighting Nosh (Sosh?) but it was an arbok. It had +4 stages of attack and -2 stages of defense yet still barely scratched its own health bar.

Keep up the great work!

I'm having issues getting past the start screen. I followed the patching instructions, and the title screen says Pokemon 'Grand' Coliseum so the ISO file appears to have been patched correctly.

However, my controller is non-responsive on the start screen. I made sure that Dolphin is picking up my controller inputs and that the mapping is all correct. I can boot up other games and the controller works fine. I am also using the American version of the game.

Any suggestions?

Hi, new here, I found out about this through Pokétuber Shadypenguinn. Colosseum is one of my favourite Pokémon titles ever, I used to be obsessed with it as a kid. It's been forever since I wanted to play it again around a decade later but I never had the time/motivation to do so. So when I discovered this rom hack I was beyond excited and eager to play a revamped version of Colosseum! Really appreciate your effort publishing this!

I started a couple of days ago and I'm attempting a nuzlocke blind run of this (which is probably a really bad idea although I'm very experienced in nuzlockes and just Pokémon in general). There are few things I'd like to point out:

- I don't fully understand the kind of Pokédex section of the P*DA. I can see some Pokémon detailed info (typing, possible abilities etc) but I can't see others, and the criteria seems random. like for instance it shows detailed info of some mons I battled but it doesn't for some mons I actually caught. I'm very early in the game (about to battle Cail in Pyrite) so maybe I'll find out why later.

- I was trying to grind a little bit in the square full of trainers in Pyrite and I noticed that the abilities of enemy mons may be randomly selected between the two they have access to. specifically, I'm talking about the trainer with Pelipper. the first time I fought them, their pelipper did not have drizzle, while the second time it did. Maybe the trainers mons change after you fight them for the second time? also because they don't have their shadow mon anymore? thought about this just now lol and while I'm at it, I would suggest removing permanent weather conditions triggered by abilities like drizzle like in the more recent games. It's cool to add drizzle pelipper which is a thing in recent games, but I'd make it last 5 turns. that pelipper was pretty scary, ngl.

- The trainers mons sheet is very confusing. Maybe it's me and I'm having trouble navigating the files? I'd suggest making a single file with trainers names along with their mons and whatnot. I'm sure I'm not the only one trying to nuzlocke this and since the game is hard planning battles is crucial.

- The Discord link you provided doesn't work for me...

I will share more thoughts and suggestions while I make progress in the game. Keep up the great work!

Aw thank you I'm glad you're enjoying it!

On the PDA issue yeah I need to add that to the known issues file as it does some wonky things for certain mons. If you want to find out about changes ext the documentation is your best bet.

The changing abilities thing is me messing up due to having to program both fights yet them being rather far apart in the doc, I'll fix that next patch.

Perma weather changes would take coding unfortunately and useless at that I'm afraid. Plus tbh I feel like gen 3 was defined a bit by perma sand so would be remiss to remove it.

Honestly documenting all the trainers would have burnt me out big time with how long this took, I just didn't have it in me hahah. May put the boss teams in at some point tbf.

Thanks so much for the feedback!

I wanted to edit my first message but I figured I'd wait. i found out that if you go talk to the teacher in phenac city she'll manually update the info in the PDA, which is neat.

about trainers docs - I beat miror b yesterday and all the trainers up to that point (miror b included) have their accurate pokemon data in the trainers' mons folder. so, at least up until miror b, all the info are there and seem correct, you just have to search for the right files. it's kinda tedious but it works. the most bugging thing is that, in the cave for example, since you don't know what exact order the .txt files follow, when you can take different paths you can't be sure if you're gonna fight trainer 1 or trainer 2.

i mean, this documentation is barely of any use for people who just wanna play this game in the standard way, im only bringing this up because im doing a nuzlocke.

so, about nuzlocking... up until where i am now, it seems definitely possible, but preparing for each battle is mandatory. I still don't quite understand how the AI works, sometimes it seems they just go for random moves, it's weird. I can't really find a pattern. sometimes they fake out my misdreavous, or yesterday even miror b tried to leach seed my sunflora at least 3 times.

last thing I wanted to bring up is the miror b battle. note that im playing with no items in battle but also without level caps for now as up until miror b you can only overlevel your 2 starters, all the shadow mons you get access to are slightly underleveled and can't level up. im pretty sure the miror b fight would be near impossible with umbreon and espeon at 35, it would massively rely on good rng and AI messing up multiple times. for the record, i had a lv38 espeon and lv39 umbreon. looking at miror b's team the fight looked impossible, but the AI helped me out immensely. they kept water pulsing my sunflora instead of ice beaming it and ice beaming my umbreon instead of doing focus blast. ive no idea why that happened, i'd like to understand the AI better.

a tiny suggestion i wanted to share is, for nuzlocking purposes, since miror b has 4 ludicolo, all with different natures and movesets, you should make them discernable from each other. except the one at level 35, the remaining 3 are all lv34 and female. i'd change the gender to one of them or make one lv33 just so you can tell them apart. i feel like it's important also because their movesets are pretty different from each other: one is physical, one is special, one is mixed, one takes more of a utility role with fake out and rain dance.

again, these are all tiny suggestions specifically for people who want to nuzlocke this, but the few tweaks i mentioned wouldn't hurt anyone. im having a ton of fun nuzlocking this, it's super challenging but super rewarding.

i'll keep sharing more insight :)

For some reason Play Rough just did super effective damage to a Ledian?

i think ledian is a fighting type in grand colosseum, but i may be wrong - im just assuming since the type changes are in line with drayano hacks

Why is furret ground type and what made you remove recoil from shadow rush?

Partly due to the line from the anime, partly due to it needing something to distingusih it from other normal two stages, and because it didn't make sense for Pokemon being supposedly stronger as shadows yet having an objectively bad move eating up a slot. Also losing a catch to recoil, especially the legendary dogs, isn't compelling gameplay imo

Thanks so much for this comment! The Ludicolo fix will be in the next patch whenever I get around to it, however I'm going to wait till I figure out the AI issues as that's currently my biggest issue with the state of Grand. Currently unable to decide on which Pokemon come out first, which makes designing AI strategies a pain. I've experienced the fake outs towards ghosts and leech seed on grass types too, so gonna try and fix that as well.

The Mirror B fight requires a lot of prep and tbh I'm not sure how possible it is to beat without Ariados, but with it I've always managed to 6-0 his team below level cap every time I've done a run. Honestly it's the cave trainers that give me the most issues hahah. Looking to see if someone will help me create better trainer documentation for future releases! Hope you enjoyed the hack till the end :)

Have popped this in known issues thank you! It uses the special attacking stat rather than the physical attack stat, currently unsure as to why hahah

Hello, I was pretty excited to play this and I got it to work on the Dolphin Emulator (5.0) but it's super laggy to the point where it's unplayable. I know I have a Mac which isn't the best but I know on XG there were optimal settings to get it to run pretty smoothly on less powerful computers, I know Colosseum takes a lot to play so is there similar things I can do to prevent the lag? The issues is in specifically battles, long cutscenes (like the intro), and it lags in the overworld as soon as you join with the girl.

Also is there a way to add a save option from the menu like XD instead of having to save at the PC? Probably really hard to do but wonder if it's possible, that'd be a huge QOL improvement.

I know you said you changed things like drayano but looking at changes he has for some of his hacks, they dont match what im seeing here. been reseting for a technitian scizor but keep getting swarm. Wanna know it it even has it or im just wasting my time. Keep it up, the game is great!

Hey glad to hear you're having fun! All the documentation is included within the download, including stat and type changes :)

You're not getting technician because sadly the ability doesn't exist in gen 3 :( Let me know how you find the rest of the game!

Will this ever fix the completely painful issues with Colosseum that makes it as bad as it is? That being Gen 3 Double Battle mechanics that makes a clean switch impossible?

Oh, or hyper mode? Is there any way to make it act like XD's reverse mode, where it actually becomes a tolerable mechanic?
