I want to know how to edit HG/SS sprites.

How do I edit the in-game Pokémon sprites in HeartGold and SoulSilver? I know they are contained in the a/0/0/4 folder, but I stopped knowing what to do after that.

Poke DS pic shows you sprites of all the pokemon in the game.

To edit them, you have to save the image, edit it with a graphic program (paint too) and reinsert with poke ds pic.

Then you click File->write to narc to save changes..

What do I do if it says the image has to be 8bpp indexed?

EDIT: I made the sprite, saved it as png, then I clicked on 4.narc, navigated to the sprite I want to edit, clicked open png, and clicked write to narc. However, when I revisit the sprite, it is double the actual sprite and has a jumbled mess below it.
