Just wondering, would anyone be interested in a Pokémon save editor that runs on Windows 8? This would mean that Windows 8 PC's AND Windows RT tablets (like the Microsoft Surface RT) would be able to edit saves. I may consider making one if plenty of people are interested, buy I won't bother if no one cares enough. So, vote on the poll!

Hi there,

I'm planning to backup my savegames on my PC of my good old Pokemon Gold (GBC) and Pokemon Ruby (GBA) games so I can continue playing them on emulators or simply having them saved on my PC.
However even after doing some searching I was unable to find some clear answers to my questions so I'm just going to ask them here:

1) Is there a way to backup GBC and GBA game saves with the same setup? I don't really want to order extra equipment for every different "platform" so I really would prefer an "all in one" solution.

2) What is the best way to do this? I have a Game Boy Advance and a Nintendo DS (1st Gen) at hand. I stumbled upon something called SuperCard DSTWO which supposedly gives you the possiblity to backup GBA games (by using an extra tool).
That would be pretty neat, especially if I also could backup NDS saves with it (I'm planning to buy NDS pokemon games in the near future). However I imagine that I can't use it for GBC games or is there a way to do it?
And I found some mentioning that this SuperCard only works for NDSi and above, is that true?

3) Once I have the backup of my games, will I be able to simply use them with emulators like DeSmuME or Visual Boy Advance? And can I also transfer those savesfiles back on the cartridge (with the same method I used to get them)?

Thats all for now, I hope you can answer all the questions, thanks in advance :)

READ BEFORE POSTING (Updated edition)

The old "read before posting" thread is a little outdated, seeing that it was made before the days of Pokegen, so the guidelines are aimed more...

The old "read before posting" thread is a little outdated, seeing that it was made before the days of Pokegen, so the guidelines are aimed more towards Pokesav. So here's a new one!

1. If you need help editing a save file, post in the Save Editing Help forum. The R&D forum is for posting editing tools or editing information. The generic Saves forum is for everything else related to save files.

2. All Action Replay related topics go in the appropriate forum of the RAM editing section.

3. The Save Editing Help forum is the appropriate area to post questions asking how to use Pokegen, as opposed to the Pokegen forum. The Pokegen forum for things related to the program itself, not how to edit save files with it.

4. Be sure to read before posting. For instance, if you need to obtain your save file for editing, there's a thread for that. Do you have absolutely no idea what you are doing or where to start editing with Pokegen? There's a thread for that too.

5. If you have trouble after editing, tell us what changes you made. It is also sometimes a good idea to upload your save file. When replying, click "Go Advanced", and near the bottom of the page, there's a "Manage Attachments" button.

If you have any questions, reply to this thread, or PM a moderator.

Since some users were unsure of what to do, here's a little guide.

Prerequisites:

Pokemon Game (of course)

(For Pokegen) A computer running Windows (XP or above, though some problems have been encountered with XP). If you're running Linux, Wine may or may not work.

(To obtain save or Pokémon) A device in another guide (linked to in step one) OR compatible Wifi (also described in Step 1)

1. Obtain your Save File or Pokémon
I recommend trying to obtain your entire save file using one of these methods, you might not have the right hardware, and might not be willing to buy $30-50 USD of equipment. If that's the case, if you have Wifi, you can use https://www.pokecheck.org/ to obtain a *.pkm file to edit. If you are using a 4th gen game (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, or Soul Silver), you'll need unsecured Wifi, or Wifi secured with WEP (which isn't really that secure at all). Even if you're playing on a 3DS, these games can't access WPA Wifi (the kind that's much more common and secure). 5th gen games (Black, White, Black 2, White 2) can use WPA Wifi, so it's much more likely you'll be able to use it (however, if you're not on a DSi or 3DS, you'll still only be able to use WEP).
2. Open Pokegen, or whatever other program you want to use, and make your changes.
Most changes will be fine, but in case you accidentally mess something up, be sure to save a copy of your unedited save file or Pokémon file so you can start over.

Although it may be fun to teach a Diglet water gun, fire blast, and fly, it will be obvious that it is hacked. Here's a description of three terms that you will encounter:

Legit/legitamate - the Pokemon was obtained using only in-game methods (not like what we are doing right now)

Legal - Pokemon could have been obtained using in-game methods given the right senario, but there's no way to tell unless you just know (a part of all 6 shinies could have been legit, but is very likely hacked unless you're just that lucky)

Illegal - Pokemon was NOT obtained in-game and could NOT have been at all. Like when I had my Diglet use Fly. (That made my friends' day...)

Why do Pokémon need to be legal? If you're only going to use them in your own game, they don't have to be. Give Sableye Wonder Guard for all I care. If you're going to do a local battle with friends, just make sure they know your Pokémon is hacked, or they might rage quit when Geodude uses Surf. But if you're going to battle on Wifi, Pokémon MUST be legal (preferably legit). Also, be aware that Project Pokémon policy forbids us to help you with cheating in Random Matchups or official tournaments because that's cheating and "despicable".

So, evandixon, how can I be sure if my Pokémon is legal? Well, if you're using Pokecheck to get your Pokémon file, you should be easily able to obtain a legality report to make sure your Pokémon is legal. The report should specify exactly why a Pokémon is illegal if that's the case.

(Todo: add links to legality guides in case Pokémon are hacked)
3. Move your save file or Pokémon to the game.
Use the same method you used in step 1. Be sure to keep a backup of the original in case something goes wrong.
Frequently Asked Questions (or at least, questions that may be asked):
Q. Can't you use Action Replay to do the same thing?
A. You can, but you can't move a Pokémon to Pokegen (or your other program) to edit. Creating Pokémon from scratch using Pokegen is not recommended unless you really know what you are doing.
Hmm... That should be enough for now. I'll add more later, like what to do and not to do with Pokegen, perhaps more about legality. Be sure to comment or ask questions (which may make it to the FAQ!)
